My Vizsla had two things that turned the corner for her. I took her to the lagoon where she could walk in and she found a toy on the shore she was crazy about. I tossed out further and further until she got her confidence up. And before I knew it she was swimming. I didn’t stay long but came back again and she did even better. I was fortunate enough to run into some great playmates swimming and fetching in the water last weekend and it was on! She is very competitive running for the ball with her friends and now swimming for it.

I have a 2 year old male vizsla. I can recognize Willla’s body language so well! We take our dog camping and he mostly wades in water, he never chooses to swim, although he has a time or two swam a little distance for a stick.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I grew up with Vizslas. I have yet to meet a vizsla who liked to swim. We have always lived near Lake Michigan and spent summers on small lakes in Wisconsin. Try as we might, none of them took to the water. Like Willa, wading in creeks was entirely different, particularly if the creek was muddy & dirty….they just loved it all the more. I wish you luck with your efforts and will take notes if you come up with a solution so we can train our next one.

I also wondered this too, as it was mentioned in the video that some dogs with low body fats don’t like swimming. Which Willa does, but at the same time has webbed feet great for swimming. It’s like Willa sits in the middle of not being suited to swimming but also be suited to swimming ❤😂

We have a four-month old and a pool in our backyard. While he does not like it, we are making sure if he accidentally falls in, he knows how to swim and where the steps are.

1:40 omg how much love she has to give. unlimited and unconditional love it is interesting that she doesn't like water, at the end of the day she is a retriever. she should strive in any condition, forest, lake, hills etc

We had a V as kids that loved swimming in the river and lakes of the BC interior and we could not keep him out of the water. Our current V only likes to wade. He will swim out to a boat or inflatable in the lake just to be with us, but he does not enjoy water like the one we had as kids.

I’m had a Dalmatian in Australia who was exactly the same . I would take out in ocean on mild day (carry as he wouldn’t wade out voluntarily) and he would head straight back in with a look of almost panic. Pools lakes and rivers are even harder as no buoyancy as found in ocean. I think for some it’s been somehow bred out of their dna. I once had the same dog fall into sea off rocks and I had to rescue her. He could swim ( as Willa certainly can) but his natural response was to head for land ..that’s not all that bad . I think as not comfortable…it’s a survival instinct.
