Thank you for not giving up. I'd like to elaborate on the common concern you voiced about clueless owners who got husky only for their look. Usually those people are also more likely to go easy on their new husky in the beginning because like look at that face?? But what they need to understand, or if any of your friends are considering owning huskys, that those dogs will not simply ACCEPT you as a leader OR the bottom of the food chain as a place for them, especially if you don't live alone, when they first enter your household. A common example of this is if the dog had followed the same command before (given by you), but not doing it now that it's given by you or even someone else like your roommates - the dog is playing dumb to challenge your/their place. And you need to remain firm and follow through instead of letting them go. Don't hit or yell at them gods forbid. But stand still - keep repeating the same demand, even if you get more assertive, do it calmly. I once stood at the entrance door way for 40 mins repeating the command I knew my husky pup knew when he tried barging into the house after hearing me say 'wait'. No yelling, no hitting, just me holding my dog outside approaching the door over and over again repeating the command 'wait'. My roommate still thought I was ridiculous. But my husky had a solid retainment of that specific order after 40 mins of struggling lol. My roommate had a lab back home. She had a very hard time agreeing with my firm management of my dog let alone following any at first. During the teeth stage tho, my husky was only teething on her and not me. And that felt like a betrayal to her cuz she was a lot more accommodating and sweet to him than I ever was lol. And thats when she finally decided to claim her rightful place above my dog. The moral of this story is that a husky new to a pack needs strict enforcement on all the rules and this can be more challenging the bigger the pack is. This is why I also 100% agree w this trainer's recommendation of no family w kids or new owners in general for Blue. And honestly the most difficult stage with husky is probably the first few years where you are learning to coexist. I am able to be a lot more cuddly and loving with my Loki now that he's five and truly accepts me as his leader hehe. He's my first dog by the way. Got him sophomore year in uni. Now he's five.

I have always thought that an "aggressive, biting" dog was 'that way" due to fearfulness, exposure to a very inconsistent environment or being untrained SO wouldn't it be better to change "aggressive" to "fearful" or "terrified?" Your knowledge, explanations and demonstrations are EXCELLENT, Will! Thank you! Yes, I also agree that Huskys are a more challenging breed, particularly for those people who have THEIR OWN PERSONAL EXPECTATIONS for dogs without ever researching, or owning and generally being ignorant about dog, breed needs, dog behaviours and body language.

I bought a husky definitely not expecting a Golden Retriever out of him. Huskies are gonna be stubborn, less willing to please, less food drive, and need an active lifestyle. I personally chose a husky so I can have a running partner (as a girl I need a medium to large dog to scare off potential danger and the Mastiffs/GSD/Malinois/Dalmatian are not for me, I can run with my husky twice a day (not yet he’s still a puppy). He’s stubborn of course, but that’s expected. Every time he’s does something that frustrates me I remind myself he’s good at stuff I’d rather not deal with: like resource guarding, anti-grooming or barking at people/dogs. I’m lucky my puppy is the opposite of those but he still needs a solid training (like crate and not to chase cars) to keep up the good habits and develop new ones.

Absolutely loved this Will. I have 2 Siberian Huskys, the Male is from a well renowned champion breeder in Austria & we were 2 years on her waiting list, we had to visit her kennels regularly to learn everything about the breed from training, diet, fur care , exercise etc which is how it should be with any breed but especially with sled dogs....as you rightly said so many end up in shelters because "they look cute" but the owner had not researched at all what they could be in store for.....Our 2nd was just like that we took her from a shelter in Germany at 6 months old and she had already had 3 previous owners , bred illegally in Romania & would have been euthanised if we didn't take her , yes they are buggeroos but also the most loving dogs. I canicross run with them 4 times a week which they live for, but as for walking on a lead -- that's why I found your site to help & it has done massively.Keep up the good work & thank you all the way from Austria

Thanks for saving him!Blue is a handsome boy! You've taught me & my Family to become calm, consistent, leaders. We have our 3rd rescue, a 4 yr old, 83 lb, very handsome, male Sheprador (black German Shepherd, black Labrador mix). We were told he is food aggressive, but he is actually a resource guard dog. He stole parchment paper with bacon fat on it from the covered garbage pail, and holy hell broke loose when I went to take it. Growling, snarling, and then trying to bite my hand, but I was too fast for him and only got knicked. He stole a sausage off our son's dinner plate, & same thing. Then on his Birthday he got a new chew toy rubbery type bone which started to tear after 5 minutes. Our daughter in her 30's, picked it up to look it over amidst his growls and teeth exposure and he literally attacked her, biting her hand, then her upper arm and then her hand again even after she stood up and backed away! She had bonded with him also, coming over to the house almost daily, playing with him, teaching him commands, cuddling with him. He loved her as well as the rest of the family, our son, son-in-law, myself & my husband. We were devastated, fearful of future events. But then our son found your video on "Resource Guarding." Your info saved him, and us! In 40 yrs plus, throughout our entire lives, this Family has never had to deal with a biting dog. Thank you, Will, you are a master trainer! 👍🏻

Thanks for the video Will. I had huskies for 32 years before we started rescuing Mastiffs. I showed and raced them. I look at that boy, and he looks poorly bred. Probably back yard breeders who didn't work with the owners and as you said, owners who bought him because Siberians are splendid looking beasts. Poor guy has probably had the world against him. I'm on a lot of husky boards of FB and I see over and over that people just don't grasp the need these dogs have for exercise. Springer Spaniels are the same. But I love seeing you work with him. Thanks for all you do for dogs and their owners.

This is one example of how great and experienced of a trainer you are, watching you get bit and you don't even come off like you so much as noticed the bite. I've only been bit once and same thing and I'm not entirely sure which dog did it to correct it but I'm guess the boxer that discontinued aggressive behaviour through the kennel at me lol

Great video on husky! I completely agree with the points made about their high energy levels and prey drive. I've trained my husky, Lucas, to never bite from an early age, which is crucial for any husky owner. They definitely cannot be off-leash due to their prey drive. They're a challenging breed that requires a lot of patience and activity, but I absolutely love the challenge. It's all about understanding their needs and being an active owner. I was my boy's 3rd owner by the time he was a year old. He was good natured but today untrained and ran the show. Training him was the biggest challenge of my life but he is a good boy now. We successfully dog park and go off leash on unfenced trails. I bought a kick sled and starting to train him on that now.

Huskies are so very much the kind of dog that act unpredictable and bitey when what they really want is to do the right thing because they so want to be loved and get exercise. This breed HAS TO be rescued by experienced Husky owners. It’s the same is here in the States. They are bought as puppies because they are so beautiful and the second they hit 6 months old they are out on their ear, and it’s maybe 1% their fault and 99% the owner didn’t do the research on the breed. Breaks my heart. I recently adopted a female, like this boy. Starved for affection and so bitey because she was trying desperately to make contact they only way she know how. She was biting me like she would play bite a dog, still it broke skin and hurt, but I knew why she was doing and how to stop it. Living half starved, alone in the hills of Tennessee, for God knows how long until she was found, will do that to a breed that is so people loving in temperament. A month later, in my loving, firm, Husky-experienced, hands, she’s a different dog. Calm and affectionate because she knows she’s cared for, fed, exercised and loved. No more need to be afraid.

Dear Will, I'm a first-time owner of a young Siberian husky (his name is Gandalf). It's been quite the journey but I think me and my family have been up to the task. Sadly I need to travel abroad and my dog needs to stay with my parents. It would be amazing to have a video on how to deal with the separation or to know if there are any resources that I can show my parents in order for them to learn how to lead him properly. i was in a similar situation . i volunteer at the local dog shelter and help out with the dogs and teach the prisoners how to correct things like pulling on lead and hoe to approach a timid or aggressive dog. i got called to help out with a great pyrenees the owner died the dog was a working dog he worked on the guys farm. anyway he was a handful bite gloves really didn't help much was a very powerful dog whose had intent. eventually he came around . i ended up adopting him. such an awesome dog so many shelters would have put this dog down im glad i could help him using some of your techniques

This is my dog with her triggers. She’s wonderful most of the time. But if you hit one of those buttons she will lash out. With me she doesn’t actually bite, just hits me with her head. She also comes right back to me with her head down and tail tucked as if she knows she’s done something wrong. It’s almost like when she does it, it’s like she’s possessed or it’s an instinct she can’t control. We are working on it but it’s slow.

I have been watching a few of your videos and I love the way you treat the animals, (I think I do the same since they call me the dog whisperer here, here being Seoul, South Korea) but I am put off by how much you talk and how little you show what you do. I have a lovely 10 months old pup, who chose us, my golden retriever and me. He was born in the country side along the road, where his mother is on a chain. She had 4 puppies and when they were about 2 months old, 2 of them decided to walk with us. No matter how much I tried to make them stay with their mother. So I finally decided to let them and after a one and a half hour walk bring them back. However after a month his sister remained with the mother but he decided to follow me all the way to my car, so I had to bring him back by car and finally, I decided to keep him. Initially I let him do what he was used to do, walk with us without a leash but growing older he became less obedient so I had to leash him. All is well, he doesn't come when I call him, but he sits immediately when I tell him to sit. So I can always come and pick him up. Here in Seoul there are nowadays many small dogs and mostly he's friendly to them but sometimes, with some dogs, he doesn't think twice and launches to them growling. OF course their owners are terrified. He's on a leash but he has become so big and strong that I have a hard time containing him, so I make him sit. Which he does. But I wish he would stop doing it altogether. There are a few dog owners who are patient enough to let me practice but most aren't. (And my Korean isn't good enough to reassure them) the retriever and the pup are doing great together though, Any advice would be appreciated. And again, I would love to see some videos where you don't repeat yourself over and over again but show what you do.

What an interesting case. There's really no warning to it, he doesn't give any indication of generalized issues but there's something about having his face and neck handled that he's really learned to lash out at. Interesting that he put the lead on so gently in the first place but then has that response. Have definitely encountered dogs like that are otherwise great but they're really prone to what I call "collar panic" where if they're held by the collar or the scruff they just freak out and start screaming and biting even if you're not doing anything more than just holding them in place.

Ugh... I have a Husky/German Shepherd mix and it always horrified me that if something ever happened to me, she might end up in the hands of someone who can't handle her. She has so much structure and exercise now but it costs money to put her in daycare and make sure she gets enough exercise. She's been through lots of training and is incredibly smart and well-behaved now but gosh it still worries me sometimes. I'm so glad this husky ended up in capable hands 💕

Yet you don’t show how it’s done in action. I have a 4 month old Berger Belge/Tervuren. He had been left in a pack of dogs but no training and very little human interaction. He is extremely intelligent and a quick learner but only on his terms. Today he lay down during a sit command so I gently lifted him by the collar to a sit position so he knew what I wanted. I’ve done this a couple of times on previous days training with no problem but today as soon as I touched his collar he snarled and bit my hand. How do I deal with this as now worried he’ll be an aggressive dominant dog.

? What do you think of a dog that goes for a month or two without biting and then bites because you told it to do something it did not want to do. Something it knows very well and does several times every day. For example, getting out of the car and into the house? Approaches me from the other side of the room, looking like she wants affection, enjoys a few pets then suddenly goes stiff and latches on my arm and Shakes it violently. Kind of a rhetorical question this dog was deemed dangerous. Just wondering how common is this, what would the early warning signs be, any thoughts you have on the subject of dangerous dogs would be appreciated.

My pup husky has a biting problem when he wants to keep playing or when we’re in the middle of a play session and he accidentally (or purposely) goes for my arms or hands or even legs. I never thought on getting protection for my arms and legs. It’s actually a great idea. It’s hard to stay calm, when it hurts so much lol. Specially when you can’t get to do corrections with the leash, collar or touch, because this clever little monster can dodge it lol. The idea is not to let it get in several bites before I’m able to stop him, so he knows it is simply not allowed.

Mine may be broken though. They don't howl or sing. No idea how it happened but mine are relaxed and quiet house dogs. I see all these husky videos and wonder. You're totally right though. My lot need a sniff walk, a training walk and a run daily with brain games to break up the day otherwise I doubt I'd have a house.

I saved a year old Husky from being put down by shelter last week. He was great but out of nowhere he bit my arm and I got eight stitches for my trouble. Boy that is a lot of pain. He went to another shelter the next day. I was very naive thinking this guy would be like the other two I had.

i've met 2 huskies in my life who were with wrong owners & i was really worried about both. one of them spend its whole life tied up in the yard with a walk every few days. i think he got put outside because they couldn't manage him in the house. the other was in a upstairs apartment with another dog.. out of control energy levels, and huge size at 1 year. the other smaller dog seemed miserable & bullied. owner tried dog training classes but no joy .. in both cases they were got by female owners for the "guard dog appearance" just like you say in this video

We found a husky in our airbnb's kitchen last year and we decided to adopt her and care for her. will no bite gloves allow me to take back authority when my dog tries to eat something she found in the street that she is guarding (growling/willing to bite over)? Like if she's eating a piece of foil, could I take it from her with those gloves and then trade her something she likes....because so far I have learned to keep my fingers out of the way but therefore she knows she can get away with it. I've tried bribing with higher value treats, but usually she will eat those AND keep the item she has. We are playing games to improve leave it and drop it/out but when she has something she shouldn't, I often panic......

The gloves aren't going to help you fix that behavior. By "trading" or "bribing" with treats, especially high-value treats, you've been reinforcing and rewarding the exact behavior you don't want. I recommend searching for a balanced trainer in your area and getting help in person. Usually veterinarians know of trainers and would be able to make a recommendation.

Your husky hatred hurts my soul. We have 6 because we take in unwanted husks. Our hardest case was a husky german shepherd we couldn't approach without him growling and trying to bite us. He was very dog agressive. He had his own room and yard, but after 8 months of hard work and muzzle training, he is fully integrated with his pack and an amazing dog. We dont trust him with strangers without his muzzle.

I've sadly seen many huskies like this one in a husky rescue sanctuary, where most of them came from being abandoned in the streets. Like you said, SO many people get them for their look and even more so since they watched Game of Thrones (!!!). Many owners who never actually did their "homework", and not knowing huskies are more difficult to train in the first place (because they were bred to run and pull sleds EVERY-SINGLE-DAY), end up letting the dog roaming around the home with ZERO boundaries, or beating him, which is always a bad thing but even more so with this breed!! They become incredibly distrustful and bite when they see a human hand approaching their face or body (especially the top of their head). Sad really, because they can actually be amazing dogs, in their own special way ( kzbin.info/www/bejne/oHOlnWuLjqZ6jKM ). I'm not even going to address the overbreeding issue, which is destroying the good temperament of the original breed (huskies were ALSO trained by the Chukchi people to stay with the human babies at night, to keep them warm), yup!

Same thing happened with our rescue (dobie/shep mix). Obviously the people before us did not discipline her and left her alone when she would throw temper tantrums. After working her a little bit the tantrums are less and less.

The issue I’m having with my puppy (husky mix with possibly pit) Is she mouths a lot, me, kids, everyone. Plus jumping constantly and very rude invasive play with our older dog who corrects her but not enough for her to stop. She’s about 7-8 months old now. Took her in off the streets. And now I’m lost for what to do lol I’m trying my best however! But she’s so difficult I can’t let my kids run around in her space without keeping her on a lead or she’ll knock them down or nip. She even nips my legs while walking her like she’s trying to heard me

Verbally corrected for bites, how? Corrected the excited jumping all over you wanting your attention behaviour, again, how? We have a border collie puppy who is all teeth. Teeth when he wants attention, teeth when he’s frustrated, teeth when he’s overwhelmed or over excited, teeth all the damn time. Our trainer has advised to ignore him and walk away when there’s biting, however now he knows I’m going to walk away he chases me and tries to drag me back with his teeth. He will run to the exits and guard them.

Husky's will push you into negative reinforcement. They just will. Its the best training for ridding unwanted behavior. I wouldn't want to start with a mid-aged husky, but raising a husky pup is easy.
