I love to read this. I was pretty sure his courses would be good and work anyway but it’s good to see comments like this from ppl who’ve actually used it . I’m planning on getting a pup but I’m moving house in a few months so it’s only fair to wait till I’ve moved before going ahead I think as it be better for the pup rather than getting to know this place then moving suddenly so I’ve decided I’m you going to use the next few months to really use wills I for and courses etc to choose which type of dog and then for training . I really was wanting to get a rotty because they are so beautiful and misunderstood and I still love them but after watching some rotty specific channels but especially wills videos I’ve decided it would be unfair of me to get a rotty as I don’t think I could give a rotty exactly what it really needs, before wills videos I would probably just have got one anyway but his videos really connected with me so i have to rethink some stuff,

@@hollyrichensartkind of similar to me , I think it’s a great idea , like you I really am motivated to use the time to make sure I get the correct breed for my situation and start from the best place possible for training as a pup . In the years that I've crate trained my puppies, I've never thought to attach my lead to the crate - allowing to be able to distract/re-focus their attention and communicate without sending them the message of "continue the behavior" to get (train) "your person to come"... brilliant

Great video. I feel like a bit of a dinosaur ! Never had any of my dogs in a crate ! Labrador retrievers and German Shepherds. But I did used to take 10 days holiday and spend all of that time with them and my existing pack to introduce each puppy to me, my young family, my pack and their new environment. Maybe having more than one dog made it easier and I appreciate that many people nowadays cannot afford one dog, let alone two or three. Thanks for introducing me to the new stuff. Appreciate it.

Uncle Sully is such a fantastic dog! Our chocolate lab was 9 when we brought our golden puppy home and she was such a big part of helping bring him out of his shell. He's a bit skittish and was from the outset, and she really helped him learn how to chill, and not be afraid all the time. Its amazing what a good, well mannered and patient adult dog can do to help with the training and acclimation process. Crate training was still a bit of a struggle with the golden, but within about two weeks he was perfect with it. I think where we failed was we had a long drive to get him, and we got our puppy home at 9pm at night, so we had very little time to settle him in before needing to crate him for bed. Not ideal for a first experience, and he screamed bloody murder for hours. He eventually settled, and at no point did he get let out or rewarded for it, but it was a miserable experience for all of us. Do you have any advice for myself or anyone else in a similar situation in future, getting a new puppy home late in the day?

NIGHT TIME QUESTION: We have two, 7-week old puppies who sleep in their crates. They do not sleep through the night yet. When they wake up in the middle of the night, they cry and that’s how we know they are awake to take them out to the bathroom. My question is, how do I avoid re-enforcing the behavior of crying to come out of the crate in the middle of the night? Day time is easier because we can wait till they get quiet before bringing them out but at night, I don’t want them to have an accident in the crate waiting for them to be quiet.
@AlyssaHazzard3 ай бұрын
I’m wondering about this too.. did you find an answer?
@jessicagalloway72113 ай бұрын
Try hitting the crate to interrupt them and say yes when their quiet. I know it sounds bad since you're hitting the crate but that's how you can start crate training with a loud dog or puppy anyway. It'll hopefully help keep their day training making sense and they'll eventually stop whining when they see you.
@AdelehalsallАй бұрын
I would suggest letting them out before they start crying. Stop the behaviour before it starts. If there’s a similar time they start crying every night, get up 30-60 mins before that to let them out
@SimifyMeАй бұрын
A few questions on some of your points, take them out every hour, does that include during the night or do you wait it out when you sleep? For your disrupting whining in the cage, did you just put the metal of the leash on the cage and make a smidge of noise to disrupt?
@AdelehalsallАй бұрын
He said that during the night they will probably wake up only once to take her out, though some puppies may snooze through. Early start will be needed regardless around 4-5am to take them out first thing

If they start whining, don’t let them out. If you do, you teach them that simply whining will let them get what they want.

My husband and I just adopted a 1 year 2 month old pitbull mix male dog. The shelter said he came in 3 months ago as a stray. I feel like he has such potential to easily be a very well trained dog. He's very receptive to lessons. My question is: are the lessons in this video ok to use with him? He has no idea what to do with toys and doesn't really really have any interest in bones/Kongs/things he can't just eat. He does enjoy training treats and his kibble as treats.
@AdelehalsallАй бұрын
I would say this course can definitely be used with your rescue - particularly as it doesn’t sound like he’s had this valuable foundational training as a puppy. They are never too old to learn basic things like crate training and toilet training, and he’ll be so grateful to you for this new structure, routine and stability you’ll be giving him. Just make sure you get a crate that’s large enough for him as being an older dog he’ll obviously need more space. You can build up his interest in toys and his play drive with time. Use his daily food rations for obedience training and also general good behaviour to encourage him to look to you for guidance. For Kongs, you can peak his interest by putting something high value inside like chicken for instance
@AdelehalsallАй бұрын
Also when encouraging his interest in toys, you need to give him TONS of praise and positive reinforcement whenever he interacts with the toy - even just a nose touch or a sniff. Do this with time, rewarding with a treat or kibble and praising as you go, and he’ll learn that toys can be fun. Over time take the food reward away and he’ll start to get enjoyment from the toy itself

Thanks i have wait 25 years to get a dog because i knew i was not going to be a good leader for that dog. I have been watching you for the past 18 month and decide to get a little friend 2 weeks ago. Thanks for those priceless tips. I have a question about my son dog who live with me, his dog feel the need to affirm her superiority all day long, she have to pee over everyone quickly, i mean she is almost pushing the other dog to pee as fast as she can over the other one, she lay still with the ball until another dog come around just to bark at him and snap him and when she eat she wait until another dog come to grawl and bark at him to then take a bite or two to repeat the process of wating until something come around so she can be agressive again? My son doesn't see any problem in his dog attitude or jalousy but i am scared as fuck of that dog, i can see it in her eye that she is waiting for the right moment or should i say the right oportunity to bite. Am i crazy here or that dog is really a danger? My grand son who is 18 months old is living with us and i am scared for him. Thanks

My first puppy slept with me since the day I got her, so there were no major issues with her but the second one, she was a rough one. She couldnt sleep with me so I put her in the bathroom the first night, she cried and cried untill she fell asleep around 4 am ( I put her to bed at 10 pm), the second night was the same, the third night after 1 hour of crying I went and slept with her on the bathroom floor, never cried after. I was fully expecting that because of her crying someone in town will call animal control at me for animal abuse (because thats what it sounded like to me and I knew what was the deal, immagine a random person that doesnt know whats going on...

@weedhigh2564 I made this comment 5 days now, my puppy is not crying as much in his crate anymore. I attached the leash to his crate and I just rattle it when he cries. it doesn't scare him, he doesn't care too much. but it's still an unpleasant sound that he'd rather not have to listen to. and I give treats when he lies down. my first puppy that I crate trained, I did something similar to you. I just completely ignored her crying all night and it took a whole week for her to stop. and even now, she still does it sometimes. I feel better with the rattling the crate and rewarding relaxation method. it's faster. I also think it's clearer communication to the puppy.
@weedhigh25642 ай бұрын
@@ninacerda7983 yeah mine are not crate trained, I took the hard way of doing things, I know better since then and the puppy im getting next spring will start day 1 his crate training. Its so much easier to crate train them because you avoid a shitload of trouble that way. Not to mention that potty training is a breeze when you crate train, opposite to the way I did things with my second girl, took her a whole month and even after there were "incidents" sometimes, untill I taught her to do both businesses on cue, that solved all issues, again, next dog im starting that day one. We live and we learn, even tho im now a dog trainer im not one to shame people for what they teach (or dont) their dog. One thing I wanted to mention, in your original comment you say that even the noise from the rattling would not interrupt his crying, that is actually a good thing, means he is naturally brave and focused on his task and while you probably dont want crying to become his task, with proper nurturing of that innate talent of his you can make an excellent dog for yourself. Some dedication and a bit of training and you should have an amazing pup on your hands, do you mind if I ask for his breed?
@ninacerda79832 ай бұрын
@weedhigh2564 I know, once I realized the noise did not interrupt his crying I was like happy because I recognized what it meant about him but also like "oof" cause I didn't think I'd be able to stop his crying. I sat there for hours waiting for at least 2 seconds of silence so that I can reward it. then i decided to try the rattling even though he didnt care. he still cried during the time I rattled the crate but a few seconds after I stopped, he also stopped crying and I was able to catch it and reward it. he's a beauceron, and the breeder did well with exposing him to loud noises as early as she could. my first dog I crate trained, I only rewarded the silence and ignored the screaming. especially because she was a more fearful puppy, i didn't want any negative association with the crate. thinking back on it now, I don't think I would change the way I crate trained her. she had a different temperament than this puppy. it just sucked to lose like a week of sleep over that.
