So Phase 4 has been out for about a week or so and it's the first new classic release where I havn't really been feeling it in a long time.
Today I go over what are some of my problems with Season of Discovery heading into phase 4. At the end of the day i'll still be giving it a go, albeit very casually, but just don't see it as something i'll play the whole way through.

I thought sod would be classic plus, but it turned out to be retail lite. I was all for reusing a couple of abilities, but the vast majority of runes were just from retail or future xpacs. Felt bad

The concept of meta has completely destroyed gaming for me, I don't want to use the same cookie cutter build and set up to get into groups or raids or whatever. I've been enjoying SOD but just finally reached my burnout point. after reaching lvl 56, looking at the myriad of grinds I am facing for pre-BIS, rep etc, then looking at our guild roster which was gutted by forced server transfers and slow decline as P3 dragged on, I'm realizing we can't even field a 20 man, much less a 40 man raid. Not interested in starting anew with another guild and really just not motivated to grind anymore. Thought it was a great idea and hope they use the experience and feedback for a true Classic+ in the future.

The grind for pre bis isn’t as bad as it was in original classic with the tarnished reals, and of course the dungeons are way way quicker to clear. You can also start farming at 58 np

Roster boss is what killed my motivation, as well as feeling like I had to be online running around and either gathering or running incursions in P3 to keep up with the gold sink for consumes. Cata and retail sadly drew me back in during the downtime we had and myself, along with about half the raid team, just never came back

@@Kilmar4999 Yeah, I hear ya, wasn't a complaint as much as an explanation of what happened to me and my motivation. As I said, I enjoyed SOD, just kinda hit a wall. I think SOD DID/DOES offer new content and a fresh take and had the guild not petered out I'd prolly continue on, just finding no motivation to do so. Hoping they will apply lessons learned regarding server mgmt (being forced from a smaller, tighter community onto larger mega servers- TWICE for some), incursions, balancing etc for a future Classic+ with actual new zones, dungeons, etc.

Can't convince myself to go back. The incursions burned me out so hard. It was not that you can turn off the exp boost or not doing incursions, but you had no one to play with. Runes were ridiculously overpowered you could easily solo most if not all quests alone(assuming you did quests in the first place instead of spamming incursions) People were so goal oriented and just spammed this spammed that. Then you logged in once to do a raid. Or worse, never logged in again.

Vanilla will always be what you make it, it is the most sandbox non linear version of the game and that's what makes it divisive. If time isn't a factor it all becomes more enjoyable because it eliminates fomo. Unfortunately people are sweats and will faceroll everything really quickly and burn out. I personally think they could have changed the levelling experience but maybe they are going to do that in another season. They are learning all the time what works and what doesnt so they hopefully will build on this knowledge.

same feeling, can't really blame the devs for this. If i was more content with the state of my life i would CERTAINLY have a blast with p4, as my best friend and guild mates since P1 are still playing, really cool peoeple that love to mess around doing world pvp and who actually quested + pvp their way up the levels, non try hards, imagine how lucky i am to have this potential experience. But it's locked behind the dreadful feeling of not having achieved enough in life yet to deserve the rest and escape even the best version of wow could provide.

World Buffs is the reason I won't play SoD endgame. I have zero interest in needing to go collect them all just to raid. Absolutely not. Which frankly is a shame, because Shaman Tank is so cool and I really hope we see it added to retail at some point.

Short answer: No Long answer: They gave too much focus to class changes, bringing in retail abilities, & world events. We wanted new areas. We wanted new raids/dungeons. We wanted Classic with more to see & experience. Some of us even would've been happy with new races or class combinations. It lost the classic feel. I agree with someone calling it retail lite or retail in Classic. And what they're doing now is far too little too late. It's a pretty big bummer.

The reason I'm done with SOD and wow in general is the realization that there is really only one way to play the game and its not really an expansive world where you can do anything and play however you want. All the cookie cutter guides on gear you should have to your actual class rotation to the optimal way to level to getting high parse score, anything else is playing the game wrong. WOW is actually a very linear game with clear instructions on exactly how to play the game and once you reach level cap you burn out because there is nothing else to do because there is only one way to play the game.

Why would having to get the class-specific runes for an alt be a problem though? Isn't it part of "the journey" to venture out and make your character stronger? Isn't that technically content you haven't yet done? I can however see that classes that have runes dropped by the same mob or gathered from the same chest can be a bit of a nuisance to have to do on multiple classes. Perhaps they can have those kinds auto-completed, leaving only runes that you haven't yet "discovered" how to collect.

SoD had some positive for sure but I feel like they lost track of what players really wanted. Vanilla is already a pretty full game with reputations, quests, dungeons and everything else to get a character optimized before raiding and I feel like adding MORE to that chore list was the mistake.

I started playing SoD at the end of Phase 3 and I've had a blast so far. I'm playing it very casually, I haven't raided in SoD and I'm not planning to (got enough of raiding in 2019 re-release). So I'm just running around, exploring new runes, quests and talking to people in dungeons. I feel like I'm still playing good old Classic, but with a set of new skills, a different play style (tanking as a Warlock) and some new fun things to do. I'm on a EU PvE server Wild Growth and though I stumbled into some toxic guys, 90% of the people are very nice and chill, that's a big improvement compared to PvP servers. Of course, Blizzard could have done a lot more with SoD, I would be excited for new zones, more new dungeons, mechanics, etc. I think they're testing the waters to see if there's enough demand for real Classic Plus. Fingers crossed they will continue in this direction, because just re-releasing old expansions isn't as exciting for me anymore

The xp buff is great for rerolling and rounding out your roster. Several of our officers rerolled for ease of logistics- leaving behind their phase bis toons. They dinged 50 the night before phase 4 released.

As someone who's leveled **hundreds** of characters through the 1-60 experience - I hate this take. The point that you're ignoring is that endgame in classic wow sucks. Leveling is where it shines. So skipping leveling to get to the shitty end game is just ridiculous. I understand that maybe leveling in classic wow isn't your thing. Or maybe you're bored of it. But then go play something else. If you don't enjoy the classic wow leveling journey then the game just is not for you. Classic wow is closer to a single player game like skyrim. It's fun to play through and then once you've finished the game you *maybe* spend a little time enjoying being a god before you put that character down forever and either start a new one or take a break from the game.

My problem with it is that one of the things they pushed was the new tanking specs, but really only cared for one. The shaman tank. And that they completely shafted rogue tanks, every phase I’ve been like surely they’ll buff it only for it to never come. Then that latest post by aggrend saying that currently tanks are too easy. ??? Goes to show that they’ve never played nor care about that tank.

3:30 people have leveled to 60 many times. The leveling journey is fantastic but nobody wants it to take 5-7 days playtime when the fun is trying out new characters with fresh content. And the buffs aren't even that crazy. It still takes a long-commitment to cap a character

And people like you are the reason I don't play Blizzard servers anymore. The classic community doesn't know what it wants. They want the journey and slow progression of classic yet the fast paced end game progression of retail. Pick one. Not even forgetting this is a SEASONAL realm, once naxx comes out chances are blizzard won't be bothered after that point and once the realms die they move to the next thing and retire the SoD realms. If all the community wants is fresh realms with new economies and interactions, then I can get the same experience on a private server, which majority of have better content and communities than the official Blizzard realms. But, I'll stick to my 1x servers like a boomer. Because, I actually love the OG wow experience.

My SoD guild had about a dozen raiders in in it. Perfect for phase 1 and 2. Then we reached phase 3, and we had to start hunting pugs to fill out numbers (this was on Penance, the lowest population SoD server by a considerable margin). Once Cata came out we had to take a forced break from raiding, and people just stopped logging in. When Phase 4 came out, only half of the dozen came back. I've personally found it a struggle to get motivated to level up, chase pre-bis and get a character ready for raids I'm not even sure might happen. Plus Cataclysm has been far more engaging than I anticipated.

In phase 4 Priest’s Power word:shield rune requires an entire group to go out of their way to clear Strat in an annoying way where you have to waste time going back and forth solving riddles. Needless to say, I installed turtle wow last night

I think it would be cool if the molten core heat level 2 was a hard version and then heat level 3 is the exact same difficulty as level 2 except world buffs are dispelled in that one.

I dropped off for phase 2 due to time, and the further the game goes the less I cared to come back. There's just too much with all the different versions of WoW, and that's not counting other games out there. I have ZERO interest in getting the runes I missed.

Honestly the biggest issue with SoD is they just added too much, and went too crazy. Vanilla really just needed some sprinkles and a cherry on top to be near WoW perfection. Balance classes so more/most specs are viable in groups/raids. Preserve the existing specs and class flavors of vanilla (cough NO DW enhance cough). Add a bit more incentive to explore the world while leveling (runes were initially a great idea in that regard). Add some new quests to flesh out the lore of the world, and allow for more options while leveling (Azshara comes to mind). Add new raids, and add difficulty levels to raids so people who want a challenge can get it. Add class sets, and rebalance raid loot tables so you don't need to run old raids for a single OP item when new raids come out. GET RID of world buffs, or at least make them persist through death ffs. Don't add cheesy near mandatory ways to skip the leveling process, don't ruin the economy with insane gold influxes, don't add exp bonuses, at most add the bonus exp leveling sets so leveling alts isn't so restrictive. I sort of feel like the devs behind season of discovery are just randomly throwing darts at a board of ideas, and have no idea what actually made vanilla so great. Maybe they're not curating the gaming experience to exactly what YOU want. Plenty of people are enjoying SoD right now. People that don't complain that its not exactly what they wanted. There are several versions that you can play for the cost of 1 sub but thats not enough for you. They're not releasing a fresh server while SoD is out. Sorry to burst your bubble. 10:11 world buffs should only work in the open world - an exception could be having something like ONE buff that comes from, say, killing Onyxia and which only works to raid her brother's lair within the next weekly reset.

Phase 3 broke my heart. I went all-in on SoD because I'm not going to play cataclysm, but the jump from 10 to a 20 person raid killed my raid group. So I levelled two characters to 50 with incursions the first weekend and saw how tedious it was. Then I saw they over-tuned the raid and I just stopped playing. By all accounts phase 4 is much better, but I've logged in a couple times and can't make myself care about the game anymore. I'll probably let my sub lapse because I'm not currently playing SoD *or* Cataclysm.

I really don't like the rune system. They added WAY too many abilities per class and watered things down. IMO they should have added just enough abilities and tweaks to make existing nonfunctional specs work well, add a few tiny QOL things like longer pally buffs or what have you, and left the class changes at that.

P..S. rune hunting is fine as long as it's a seasonal thing that helps Devs figure out what works and that gets turned into new talent trees for a classic+ version of the game.

Personally I'm someone who enjoys playing the "meme specs" that were completely outcast during vanilla. It has been my dream to play Ret paladin on vanilla so for someone like me, SOD is everything ive ever wanted and I'm having a blast.

It's the only reason I'm playing SoD. Lvl 60. Who the hell cared to farm and raid log bfd at 25, gnomer at 40, etc. This is what everyone has been waiting. Full class changes at 60. New content and changes to a 1-60 classic wow. Still need the actually new raids but I think they can only reuse assets. Ill say I definitely feel more casual this time around. Not in a rush to pre bis or even level cap on all my characters. Just enjoying the game when I want to play

13:04 for the future, I think a better system would be to create characters factionless, and then you build up reputation to different kingdoms etc, and through them engage in pvp based on the conflicts between different kingdoms.

As someone who never had the time to do level 60 stuff in classic before, im still interested. The levelling is surely a major downside. Low 40s to mid 50s is BY FAR the worst stretch in Vanilla. They should just give people the old runes fro the vendor. Why do i have to wait to 60 to solo SM qith my pally to get the Sheath of Light rune? Theres no groups for that content anymore lol

I barely even played phase 3 and not that much of phase 2. So going back to SOD is actually refreshing to me. I also only leveled up a priest back then, so now I am trying a mage. I must admit, that I really enjoy SOD phase 4 at the moment, World PvP included.

The problem doesn't really feel like its collecting the runes, its more that many require multiple people and given how low the population feels at lower levels for those things it makes it much more annoying to do.

As this is my first time playing WoW in well over 10 years, I'm having a great time! SoD almost seems like it was specifically made for people who never really got to experience Vanilla endgame, but realised there were definitely improvements to be made to flesh out the fun. Spec viability was garbage orginally, and people would laugh at ret paladins trying to dps, and prot paladins tank -- well, they fixed it, and I'm enjoying it for what it is. A fresh coat of paint. P3 did last way too long though, and my guild has died, so I'll be looking for a new one with MC releasing this week

SoD is alive like never before. This phase is the best so far and there are lot of things to do. Pve class balancing is on point and SG event is very good for farming gold and reputation. Realms are so populated, there are like 10 layers in peak hours.

1-60 was fun at times but I think tons of players need this exp buff. Speaking for myself I feel like a complete insane person for doing the same shit AGAIN. This season allowed some different routes and less tedious questing. Even then, my guild can barely hold on to 20 people and there are like 10 ex players lurking in Discord who just can't do the same shit AGAIN. Life's too short.

I have no issues with the wild PVP events, and the experience buff is a good thing (allows many alts), but having to gather all of those runes from phase 1, 2, and 3 is going to be a pain for sure.

I leveled a priest from 1-51 since monday. I figured out a way to do graveyard runs and was getting about 65k exp/hour with the exp boost. Its pretty fun

On the note of pvp servers i got my main roped into one by my friends when sod started and hated it this whole time. But now with BRM camping being a thing i legitimately am abandoning my main because i cant seem to get off the server. Any time i might spend will have to be on an alt somewhere else, which is extremely frustrating to be part of. Also phase 4 killed my friend groups will to play and cata is pretty sick right now.

Basically, the problem here is WB. WB were not designed to be part of the end-game raiding, a requiremente to complete the targets of raiding, but an award or reward to the whole faction. I will suggest you to try to raid without WB at all.

I started playing WoW in Shadownlands s2. This is my first time playing Vanilla WoW and I can't wait to experience Molten Core! I've played SoD since phase 1, made a break during phase 3 but now I am back and I am having fun. There is so much to do - prebis gear, getting reputation and gold from Eruption event quests, crafting epic gear, doing world bosses! The only thing I am afraid of is that my interest for game will fall off as soon as I get prebis gear since there is no reason to log in on character appart from raid for hour or two twice a week. Since beginning of SoD I am hoping devs will add some kind of mythic+ dungeon or raid(challenging content and limited time to succesfully complete) that rewards it's players not with better gear but with titles, mounts, quicker travel item(portal to somewhere toy...). Also, as Willie said, I hope they add some system for getting runes from previous phases quicker since every class is worth trying now but getting runes is pretty slow.

This is the problem with Classic and any version of WoW: - Some love the leveling experience, with questing, story etc, don't care much for end game - Some love only endgame, aka the game BEGINS at max level (me included), hates leveling So it becomes exceptionally hard to please both groups

Yea I did the exact same thing. Leveled all classes to 25 and had all runes in P1, focused on 3 characters in P2, raided with two in P3, haven't jumped into P4. Like you said, it became too much like retail and honestly P2 and P3 runes were really lazy and boring. They had a really great opportunity with SOD. They had a very strong start, but the quality of new content diminished each phase.

Really enjoyed P4 so far, it's definitely up there with P1 for me. Done with the R10 grind, got all the dungeon set pieces and working through the t0.5 questline before MC release. MC is my all time favorite raid. Definitely a lot to be excited about for me.

In AU, there aren't enough players to perform the leveling dungeons as everyone is at the previous destination already. 5:30 Tier 0.5 really needed a severe cost reduction, because I am not getting anything bar my first two ever on my druid (because they're bis) 10:35 I have seen exactly 3 SM groups on AU since, it is a very good thing these sheer luck related runes/abilities are on a vendor. 10:45 I literally can't get half of my warrior ones, nor even my berserker stance because my best weapon currently is from the deadmines I am level 34 I have not received a worthwhile rune since Teldrassil. 11:30 The riders are absolutely fucked on alts, especially due to the cost of mounts and the impact these abilities can have. 12:15 every single instance in vanilla has a choke point entrance but brm is THE choke point.

SoD and Classic's slow decline has told me that nostalgia is a hell of a drug. We blew through shit that i used to think was the peak of difficulty. But the reality is we were all stupid kids who didnt know anything. Same feeling i got going back to old pokemon games i struggled with as a kid. Or old jrpgs. Or any old game where knowlege trumps skill. Obscurity is not a replacemnt for mechanical skill requirements because they work once.

I played phase 1 and had some of the most fun I've ever had in Classic. When I hit 25 and started raiding I repeatedly joined with the angriest players I've played with since MW2. I went back for phase 2 and nobody cool was still playing. Bummer city

I think that is a major factor is how long it took for us to reach 60. I lost a lot of hype and motivation waiting 8 months to play end-game stuff.
