A lot of those women this was the START of a huge career... Hef would pay for school, lessons, any learning opportunities these gals wanted...even though he knew the girls would eventually leave...find me someone who posed for playboy that regrets it and thinks it was an awful experience? He took care of these gals...it's true many of them became his lovers, but that was NEVER a demand...only an open door.

Buckley is not really interviewing him. He's simply lecturing and castigating him.

wow, this is the toughest interview Buckley has done. He's on fire, too. I can't help but suspect the conversation is somewhat staged or preplanned. Or Buckley is an expert on Hefner, and knows what Hefner going to say ahead of time.

II don't oppose drinking, but I do oppose my workers drinking on the job. There is no inconsistency here, and to claim otherwise is a serious logical blunder on the part of Buckley.

@TheTonylearner I totally agree with your post, except that it wasn't a waste of time for Hefner. The video stands as a record of Hefner's subsequent victory over the right wing puritan. A perusal of You Tube or the rest of the Internet is testimony to that. Outlived the old bugger, too.

I despise his condescension but the man spoke like music. He was an artist of sorts. Hefner impresses me with his proposition of a somewhat philosophical theory and outlook.

Hefner got a lot of his ideas from Kinsey who did sex research at Indiana University years before this, circa '30s. All Hefner is really saying is that if you get a chance to play the field and have several different partner before you get married you are more likely to stay married then if, in Christian theory, two virgins get marry and know nothing else. I think this is true. In the Dead Sea Scrolls people never got married and slept with many different partners in youth then settled with 1

Buckley is in his element; unfortunately the sexual revolution was more than just indulgence. It was about being single as a woman... you can go to college for more than finding a husband. Sex can be more than missionary with the lights out. You did have choice in what you wanted in a partner. Pregnancy and venereal disease were no longer inevitable consequences of non-marital sex. And people can talk; a new world. Time moves on, and people are still looking for that great thing...togetherness.

Really because somehow this person w the attn span of a fly made it thru 7 years of college... Buckley continously cuts off Hefner and repeats the same things. Hefner cant get a word in without getting cut off etc. But it's ok, I know his views and he's a LOT smarter than Buckley. This is about personal freedoms.

Anyone who was fortunate enough to view William Buckley's interviews during his lifetime, understands now, from a perspective of hindsight, how privileged we were to live at a time when quality often prevailed over catering to the lowest denominator. Interviewer's were capable of intelligent discourse rather than just putting forth questions for prime time ratings, musicians were interested in music rather than music videos, food manufacturers made food instead of artificial compositions, etc.

He represents sexual freedom which today some people still cant handle....He started Playboy in the 50's as an alternative to the restrictive 50's which were some very conservative times... What people dont get is this opened the door for people of different sexual orientations, gay, bi, trans etc...He opened the door for the 60's sexual revolution though people were so intoxicated by music etc no one realized... AND it was all done in a tasteful non pornographic way...

From an aesthetic standpoint I think Playboy is a celebration of the female physique/anatomy. As to the people who say that it objectifies women, isn't the body an object in contrast to the mind/spirit, which would be the essence that makes us human?

You REALLY think that was EVER his goal? His goal was to liberate sexuality in doing so he opened the way for gays and bisexuals to be who they are...If he said it he was joking...or messing w Buckley as Buckley was w him...

I think Buckley is belaboring the point on the inconsistency of Hefner's missives to readers versus those to his 'bunnnies', simply because he's getting off on the repetitive usage of "bunnies" (He uses it like 6 times in 8 minutes!)

Typicallly when one does an INTERVIEW they allow the person who is being INTERVIEWED to speak, not just asking the continuously smearing questions....we know what side he's on... Might as well have been him talking without Hefner sitting there...THAT is not journalism...that's an ambush.. There was NO debate here...just an interviewer making HIS beliefs known... A good interviewer doesnt make their opinions of the person fact...Where is he now? Playboy STILL has a great circulation!!!

It's called point, counter point. The fact that you got "really" tired of hearing his voice proves you have the attention span of a fly."slinging shit"? You mean an expressing an opposing point of view without vulgarity? The point is that intelligent discourse was conducted. You're looking for "entertainment", so look elsewhere. We were seeking intelligent debate of topical issues.

@MissElfreda No, the revolution isn't anywhere near complete yet. People need to have a healthy attitude towards sex before that can happen, and in the good ol' USA the scourges of stratified gender roles and gender expectations and misogyny run rampant. There's a lot that needs to change

Look man as someone, who'd made a big ol husky killing from being seriously experienced in the game of being ogled at by wolves disguised as men in sundries of predominately male audiences solely for commercial reasons, had succinctly put: "Sex is currency. What's the use of being beautiful if you can't profit from it?" - Lilly St. Cyr Now if u can't fathom that (esp. being a dude) then I suggest you go talk to a doctor! Fast!

As a man I admire Mr Hefner for emancipating women from the socio - sexual prison that religious dogma has kept them trapped in for thousands of years. Mr Hefner's Playboy philosophy is a natural progression from the sexual freedom voiced by Bertrand Russell. Playboy is an artistic magazine in essence, from which women can express their sexuality.

Total non sequitur. You responded to a statement reflecting on how lucky those of us (of that generation) were to have regularly had quality such as interviews and discourses such as those conducted by Mr. Buckley. Now you're trying to discredit the quality by denouncing his views and stating that "Hefner was a lot smarter than Buckley". Who the hell was taking sides in the discourse? The comment was about the general interviews (i.e., the show) as opposed to the crap of today's culture.

I'm too busy reading (see, I'm trying to maintain the conversation on your level). :)

This debate is completely dated and irrelevant to our times. Hef died as almost a prude among peddlers of pornography, and Playboy had better writers than any left wing rag you see today. Buckley, though he was a little better here in 1966, got to ramble and digress more and more later in life, and became increasingly harder to follow

4:40 ok, Buckley is a pseudo-intellectual, with his smarmy know- it disposition. Hef is talking strickly on biological terms..i dont think Buckley is understanding that. Then again, this was 1966, and time has certainly proved Buckley to be a typical non-logical linear thinker on this subject.

@alangordon8906
@alangordon8906 5 жыл бұрын
Absolutely right. Buckley never took himself out of the social framework as anything much beyond a great gift to comedians and impressionists. Smarmy is a good word, and Robin Williams did a great one of him on SNL Hef turned out looking almost prudish among fellow pornographers, and seemed like the deeper thinker next to Buckley

@@alangordon8906 Hefner's thinking is about as deep as a puddle in a pothole, and a perfect example of that is his notion stated here - 3:14 - that the sexual revolution would somehow magically lead to a more robust monogamy within society. His own marital record is a bald contradiction to that. The explosion in divorces since the time this aired is a bald contradiction to that. The Jerry Springer show is a bald contradiction to that. Need I go on? Oh OK, why not? The number of grown children saddled with hyphenated surnames and all the psychological burdens that come with them is voluminous testament to the sheer stupidity of the most failed social experiment in human history, and it's the most dubious of honours that we're witnessing it in our own lifetimes. His thinking didn't extend past his own libido - which in and of itself isn't remarkable. What was different about him, at least in part, was the verbiage and compromised eloquence he hid it behind. It fooled a lot of people, and over the long haul it's easily seen by anyone without their heads in the sand how tragic the consequences have been.
@alangordon8906

I can't disagree with anything you said. i just happen to like Hefner's slightly more original angle than Buckley's rigid and stuffy legalistic approach with all its Catholic overtones.
@ironymatt
@ironymatt 5 жыл бұрын
@@alangordon8906 Well, a lot of people liked Hefner's angle, but the core principle behind it was anything but original. Nothing wrong with fantasies, hedonistic or otherwise, but if they could be put into practice without adverse consequence they wouldn't be called fantasies.

Buckley's intelligence is so far superior to hefner's it is astounding. hefner continually attempts to speak at Buckley's level and fails miserably; it is hilarious really to watch hef try to up his mind to Buckley's level for this show...nice try hef but you are woefully lacking in the cerebral category...this plainly shows he'fs lower intelligence so clearly. And watch his expressions and fear in his eyes when the superior Buckley challenges him. Hilarious! Hef is paranoid to be sure. Must have been very embarrassing for him at the time.
