Wonderful conversation. For history nerds like me, this is so satisfying to listen to this. I can't understand why several indians are getting triggered and suggesting that these guys are portraying Tipu as a hero. He was a significant character in the history of india. Period.

It's not discussing him which is the problem ,it's diminishing his atrocities that is the problem. Dalrymple is the perfect example of a passive aggressive British historian with an aim to build a sanitized narrative of India as pleases him . Its like selling a 'not really a bad guy ..though he did some wrong ' argument about Hitler to the Jewish people. And then to go on to give an example like... he funded the Autzwitch camp for Jewish people,since almost everyone there was one. Sounds preposterous,right? But hey ,this is India and Indians are not really clued in to the gaslighting they have been subjected to since Macaulay's education hit the floor. Not even the genocide of our own people offends us.🤷‍♀️

Britain was a medium sized European country, it invented an entirely new economic system called industrialisation, was probably the most inventive society in history, and built the biggest empire ever seen.

Hyder ali was a mercenary soldier,, who got ranked and later he stabbed his Hindu masters on his back (and threw the Mysore king in prison).. And their Hindu hatred did the rest of his cruel deeds on the natives. Tipu fought for Islamic rule on Mysore, he was not freedom fighter. Infact in 1790s he even wrote letters to Ottoman Sultan to help him fight the Brits and establish Islamic land in South India.. He changed names of all the Myore state places to Islamic, Arabic names. He destroys many many Hindus temples even in Kannada, Telugu and Kerala region. He imposed Arabic, Urdu as the state language.

Mr.Dalrymple, Definitely whatever the British did with Indians or Muslims of India is called cruelty worst then what Roman’s did to the British. There is always a peak or Summit and downward trend, life is also a wave form with all the ups and downs, we should not be cruel and selfish when you are in the top because when you hit the rock bottom you have cushion.
