An interesting account of a distinguished man. Hartley meticulously recorded every charitable donation, no matter how small, in his diary. He even calculated a notional rent on his own house so that he could ensure his charitable gifts were at least ten per cent of his income. The Aintree Institute later became a Catholic parish club and was certainly not alcohol free. During the war, the Aintree factory was covered in camouflage paint which took a long time to fade.
