One of the earliest proponents of music composed within the United States, William Henry Fry was the first to produce large scale symphonic works in his the nation. He was also the first music critic to be published in a major periodical.
The Niagara Symphony was composed in 1854 for P. T. Barnum's "Monster Concert". The single-movement work (more like a tone poem) is a picturesque realization of the eponymous landmark.
