Bishop Robert Barron and William Lane Craig discuss evangelism, faith and science, secularism, and more. Moderated by Professor Stephen Davis and Professor Edward Feser. Venue: The Claremont Center for Reason, Religion, and Public Affairs.
William Lane Craig is Research Professor of Philosophy at Talbot School of Theology and Professor of Philosophy at Houston Baptist University. He and his wife Jan have two grown children. At the age of sixteen as a junior in high school, he first heard the message of the Christian gospel and yielded his life to Christ. Dr. Craig pursued his undergraduate studies at Wheaton College (B.A. 1971) and graduate studies at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School (M.A. 1974; M.A. 1975), the University of Birmingham (England) (Ph.D. 1977), and the University of Munich (Germany) (D.Theol. 1984). From 1980-86 he taught Philosophy of Religion at Trinity, during which time he and Jan started their family. In 1987 they moved to Brussels, Belgium, where Dr. Craig pursued research at the University of Louvain until assuming his position at Talbot in 1994. He has authored or edited over thirty books, including The Kalam Cosmological Argument; Assessing the New Testament Evidence for the Historicity of the Resurrection of Jesus; Divine Foreknowledge and Human Freedom; Theism, Atheism and Big Bang Cosmology; and God, Time and Eternity, as well as over a hundred articles in professional journals of philosophy and theology, including The Journal of Philosophy, New Testament Studies, Journal for the Study of the New Testament, American Philosophical Quarterly, Philosophical Studies, Philosophy, and British Journal for Philosophy of Science. In 2016 Dr. Craig was named by The Best Schools as one of the fifty most influential living philosophers.
Bishop Robert Barron is an acclaimed author, speaker, and theologian. He is also the founder of the global media ministry Word on Fire, which reaches millions of people by utilizing the tools of new media to draw people into or back to the Catholic Faith. Francis Cardinal George has described him as “one of the Church's best messengers." Bishop Barron received a Master's Degree in Philosophy from the Catholic University of America in 1982 and a doctorate in Sacred Theology from the Institut Catholique de Paris in 1992. He was ordained a priest in 1986 in the Archdiocese of Chicago, and then appointed to the theological faculty of Mundelein Seminary in 1992. He has also served as a visiting professor at the University of Notre Dame and at the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas. He was twice scholar in residence at the Pontifical North American College at the Vatican. He served as the Rector/President of Mundelein Seminary University of St. Mary of the Lake from 2012 until 2015. On July 21, 2015, Pope Francis appointed Bishop Barron to be Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. He was ordained bishop on September 8, 2015.

it's great to see that Protestants and Catholics can be civil to each other! One of the main reasons why people turn their backs on Jesus Christ, because they look at the followers of Christ and say we don't want to be as hateful as those people! Christ's command is to love each other, not viciously mock each other. I once saw a bumper sticker , which said: "Jesus Save Us from Your Followers"! Whether you are Evangelical or Catholic discuss your differences in humility, and remember there is only one Lord and that is Jesus Christ!

@@Kitiwake yes but Immaculate Conception (although a beautiful belief) in the Catholic Dogma is ONLY tradition and required acceptance in the Catholic Church, but it's NOT Biblical TRUTH. In God's Word, Mary was of course Blessed and was looked on with Grace by God, but she was NOT sinless (Romans 3:23), Jesus Christ was the ONLY perfect, sinless human being that walked on this Earth (2 Corinthians 5:21). Mary herself also admitted in The Holy Scriptures that she needed God as her Savior (Luke 1:46-47) like everybody else, and if she was sinless or perfect, then she wouldn't need God to save her. and Mary wasn't a virgin *all* her life, only until she gave birth to Jesus and perhaps a little while longer. There's verses in The Holy Bible when Jesus started his ministry that clearly indicate that she and Joseph had more children together afterwards, brothers/half-brothers and sisters/half-sisters to Jesus Christ (Matthew 13:55-56).

Two very respectable thinkers without question. Bishop Barron's question was very fair and should be expected. That said, Dr. Craig's response was very fair (albeit restrained) and there should be no problem with that either. The "Mere Christianity" approach is what will be needed at this juncture of history in order to harness the intellectual and spiritual forces of fellow believers to turn the tide of our culture (if that is even possible any longer.) The bottom line is that the entire debate between Catholic, Protestant and Orthodox comes down to the question of "authority" and where it ultimately rests? The Orthodox and Protestant traditions reject the preeminence of Rome and find no support for it in Scripture or in history. Catholics disagree and strive to find it in Peter's priority as an apostle and in the growing authority of Rome in the early centuries of the Church. Regardless, it is Christ and Christ alone that binds us all together as fellow believers on this journey of life.

If I were Craig, I would have added that the biggest threat to Catholicism isn't Protestantism, not by a long shot. The biggest threat is Cultural Marxism.

+Drew M - I find it telling that Marxism, whose core principle is that the employees (citizenry) own the means of production and benefit from that production, is threatening to Christianity, whereas Capitalism, which is a system of one or a very few owning and deriving nearly all the benefits of production, with no qualms about exploiting the resources (e.g. environmental, human labor, etc.) needed to derive this wealth, is embraced by modern Christians.

Cultural marxism was a tactic employed by the CIA during the cold war to divide leftists in their support for the soviet union. After watching this excerpt from the entire conversation between Bishop Barron and Professor Craig, I decided to watch the whole conversation and was so encouraged that Catholics and Protestants can have a friendly civil conversation. But after WLC explains why he could not be a Catholic, he asked Bishop Barron a question that I've always pondered upon since I accepted Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior and started going to a Protestant church in 1996. " What are Catholics doing in this area in training their people ?" Bishop Barron answers; " Not enough". I'm so glad that after my salvation experience in 1996 and my testimony since then after 28 years, I started reading the Bible and started asking questions about how scriptures affect my day to day living. I just want to encourage all Christians, read your Bible and ask questions. John 8:32 " And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. "

Please, though, support the case for a Islamic reform. If your religion has a good message (which it probably has) it is not being well understood. I am a christian, and it would be a joy if you came to Christ, but if you choose not to, at least fight for the right cause. Many muslims do a lot of evil nowadays, many others prefer not think about it and many others understand these realities and fight for reform. Please join the last group. Again may God be with you.

Protestants have been around for no more than 505 years, how can Protestants come from the time of Jesus? Although the Catholic Church does teach that people outside of the Catholic Church can be saved, you find the fullness of Christ and the true and entire practice of what Christ intended his Church to practice (7 Sacraments and much more). Prior to the Reformation, there wouldn't be much reason to label as catholic for example, specifically in the Latin West as it was a given (the eastern orthodox and oriental orthodox are special cases, and in neither do you see protestant styles). Honestly, the few times I've heard him speak on specific Catholic teachings he disagrees with, I can tell, he doesn't understand them and has dedicated little to no time learning what they are. I don't expect anyone who doesn't know the teachings or read about them, to have prayed about them, to accept or understand them. Something I heard once from a Lutheran Pastor is that the Catholic Church turned away from scripture therefore it is them who split off from Christs church. I myself am currently “stuck in the hallway” as C.S. Lewis put it. Assuming it is possible for the Catholic Church to be wrong on doctrine, (something I’m sure all catholics deny) can you explain to me what seems to be a big contradiction regarding the sinlessness of Mary? Everything I’ve known as a Christian is just so shaken by that very notion. The whole point of the Old Testament and the life of Jesus was to show us that we are helpless without a savior and no one can live up to Gods standard on their own. I mean there are so many Bible verses that indicate this and throughout the whole New Testament I haven’t really seen anything that elevates Mary anywhere near being sinless.

Generally love William Lane Craig. But, I find it ironic that he says one of things he appreciates about Catholic Christianity is the ancient history and tradition dating back to the Church fathers, and in the next breath he says he doesn’t believe in things that Catholics believe. Well, unfortunately for him, Protestantism and evangelical Protestantism in particular are the outliers of general Christian belief worldwide and historically speaking. The ancient traditions and Church fathers he appreciates would be VERY Catholic if he were to meet them by some twist of the space-time continuum. They would also label his comments about the Virgin Mary to be heretical. So, I appreciate when Protestants want to discover and learn from the ancients of Church history and theology, however, I’m dumbfounded when they then claim those same ancients to be supportive of Protestant theology. I should know. I used to be one. Regardless, glad to see these two having a dialogue on the same stage.

What I found intriguing is that the Protestant said he didn't believe that Mary is the Immaculate Conception. He didn't say she wasn't only that he didn't believe it, yet although he appears to be knowledgeable he lacks logic. Jesus received His humanity through our Lady which means that if she was not already saved by the Sacrifice of her Son on the Cross before she was even conceived and He's s was born and in fact was born with original sin, then by reasonable deduction Jesus who is God, the second person of the Holy Trinity would have by birth inherited original sin which would be impossible for God because Jesus was like us in every way but sin, therefore it stands to reason that Our Lady's proclamation of being the Immaculate Conception and the understanding of the ancient Apostolic Confessions all understood it, those who choose not to believe it may in fact be committing an unforgivable sin. Just saying.

If you would like to accept Jesus as your Savior, please say the following prayer: “Dear Lord Jesus, I know that I am a sinner, and I ask for Your forgiveness. I believe You died for my sins and rose from the dead. I turn from my sins and invite You to come into my heart and life. I want to trust and follow You as my Lord and Savior.”

That's a cop-out. People should honestly and sincerely seek the truth with God's help ... where ever that takes them. Simply accepting something because "that's how we have always done it" is pretty shallow.

You should read more WLC. Your argument is a prime example of the genetic fallacy. This logical fallacy tries to invalidate a claim’s truthfulness by explaining where it came from. This in NO way invalidates the truthfulness of Christianity. You’d have to engage the arguments, instead of claiming that religion or Christianity is false, simply because many children are taught their faith by their parents. For example: “the only reason John is a scientists is because his parents taught him science as a child. It wasn’t a choice on John’s part. Therefore, the scientific method is false.” Sounds ridiculous right?

@@ThisisBrak oh, I don't know, the genetic fallacy is pretty handy. "If you were raised atheist then you're only an atheist because your parents raised you that way, but if you were raised religious then you're just rebelling against what your parents taught you." Boom, atheism isn't true. Checkmate.

I truly think that there can only be one true Christian Church, and any issues with the current teachings or practice should be worked out within the unified Church.

I always thought he was catholic. Just using simple logic "the mother of our Lord" cannot be tainted by sin if she was to bear God Jesus.

That is based on a misconception about ‘original sin’, Babies in the womb cannot sin. (Millions if aborted babies in hell?) Once they are born and grow it is inevitable that all humans will sin. In Romans it says ALL have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. Only God is without sin. Only Jesus being God did not sin after he was born. However, after giving birth to Jesus, Mary sacrificed turtle doves as per the law of Moses for purification - indicating she wasn’t pure. She also prays ‘my soul rejoices in God my SAVIOUR. If Mary was sinless she wouldn’t need a saviour.

William Lane simply need to make a small equation to realize what is the absolute truth: He acknowledge that Catholic Traditions were also practiced by the Fathers, and that Protestantism doesn't have such beliefs or practices. From there, he should also recall God saying that his Church wouldn't succumb to the Gates of Hell (therefore it won't cease to be, nor err from the truth, at least when it comes to its Magisterium and doctrines; weak individuals appear now and then, but they come to pass... and the Church stays on the right path.) If the Early Church believed in the Bishop (pope), the bishops, presbyters, deacons, confession, infant baptism, real presence in the Eucharist, apostolic succession, etc... it is completely *NECESSARY* that the true Church today have these same, very important beliefs and practices. (and they must mean the same things for today's believers). Following this logic, *there is only ONE church that matches all of these beliefs; the Catholic Church.* *Then, the equation:* True Church = Inspired by the Holy Spirit = She teaches the truth = What the Church says about Mary is the Truth. If you trust God and his message, you will trust his Church. (Do not let heretics "alter" what the Church have always taught.) God Bless

Why do all protestants use " Christians" word, like they are united? There is such a difference in beliefs, like hell (not) being eternal...And also,Jesus had debate with satan on Bible verses.Than why would God wait for 1500 years for perv king, perv priest, and psycho priest(Kalvin)? And also believing that Jesus is God,but not believing Mary is full of Grace, without sin. What is worse, islam came and they started being their own protestants after protestantism. You can go on and on.AND WE ALL THINK THERE IS ONE GOD,SO ONE TRUTH,ONE ECCLESIA...St. Joseph and Mary pray for us!

Let us pray that Bishop Barron and Mari Mari Emmanuel are the future of the Catholic Church, instead of Pope Francis’ politically correct approach that he is shifting the church towards. I’m not a Catholic myself, but it pains me to watch them get misled by their own leader in a time when the truths of the Bible should be taught and not cast aside.
