I have followed William Shatner's career for over 50 years. I simply, love the man. In all those years watching him in interviews, on countless talk shows, etc., I saw a man who sometimes appeared to be shy, other times silly, sometimes a little arrogant, or was it insecurity? An actor's dilemma. He was always charming, often funny, and sometimes, heartbreakingly serious. But always, always entertaining. He has weathered the storms of criticism and ridicule and came out much stronger for it. And that is because he wasn't afraid to be himself. He isn't one, nor has he ever been one to sit on the sidelines and play it cool, or play it safe. As he so eloquently said, "He wasn't afraid to make an ass of himself," especially if it was to entertain someone else. He is an entertainer and a damn good actor. He has made me laugh and made me cry on more than one occasion. He is human in every sense of the word and I for one am happy to be his fan. Congratulations Dr. Shatner! Up until now, I never knew you received this honor. I'd say, it is well deserved. You've paid your dues in full.

Congrats William, after reading both your books and following your online presence, I've only grown in respect and certainly believe you deserve this. Well done!

McGill University officials were so moved by Dr. Shatner's speech that the school changed their motto to "Ne timeas ipsum fieri asinus" or roughly "Don't be afraid to make an ass of yourself." and now features Shatner on the school's website where students can name their own tuition.

Great speech. Listen up, kids. It's not about the grades. It's about the experience!

Dustin Hoffman was my university commencement speaker. It was an incredible experience at the time. After watching this, however, I now feel robbed.

@jimgselder True! I got my degree at McGill and it served me well. Still, knowing what I know now, would I have spent my time there differently? Absolutely! I would have taken more chances. Still, no regrets... just wisdom I guess....

Après assez d'années aux E.U.s, c'est naturel. After my own first five years in L.A., I could actually feel myself getting gradually more stupid.

@@OronOfMontreal oh wow, I didn't know I've had this account for 5 years. Jesus. As someone who's considered moving to the states - this is interesting to hear. Pretty sick of Montreal if I'm to be honest. Vancouver was sweet when I was there. Political climate (and the regular climate) here is so crazy though that the US sounds better every year. You really think the US was making you stupid?
