comic brilliance...outside of Oliver Hardy, no other actor has even accommodated himself so perfectly to the role of henpecked husband and put-upon, humiliated and humble citizen of the world. And, only occasionally do comics set a standard for memorable mannerisms. Fields was unsurpassed, and he referred to Charlie Chaplin as a "damn ballet dancer." Both made mannerisms essential to the persona, but only Fields could claim moves so original and so carefully calibrated to his own style, that they were, for the most part, inimitable. Many imitated Chaplin, successfully and without "missing the mark." Though many imitated Fields, nobody did it successfully.
