This happened almost a year ago, but this is one of the coolest moments of my career still. Having a Hollywood Cinematographer comment on my recreation of The Batman and telling me what he did was super valuable! I had so much fun recreating this shot on a budget twice!

The former of trying, failing, trying, failing and trying again is an excellent narrative. Many filmmakers only like to talk about when they succeed, you showcase what you learn. That’s why you’re standing out.

If I’m being completely honest, I saw that as the solution in the beginning as soon as you said that was the issue. Needed to be lit from behind. I noticed that was the case when the original played. Good solution.

Love seeing the problem-solving aspect of filmmaking. I know nothing myself but all the stories I hear about folks just trying to figure it out and finding a way to get the desired result is fascinating and makes the final product that much richer.

After your analysis, it's so weird looking at the original shot and watching the soft key on Selina's face not move at all! I totally never noticed that, what a cool tricks you can get away with if people are too pre-occupied with the moving car etc.

The first thing to come to mind is to set up two opposing projectors. The first projector would be set to project onto a front-projection screen, (to provide a dynamic background, behind the car). The second projector would be placed just outside the cameras’ pov, and aimed at the car window, (the footage projected should be flipped, whereas the second projector would be facing the opposite direction of the first one). In this way, the projected images would be dynamic & interactive, as well as providing proper refraction off the “rain”. Then, it should be an easy task of peppering in whatever additional lights you want to “season” the scene with. Also, before adding additional lights, just for fill, why didn’t you try using a bounce reflector to her left? It seems like it would potentially be an easier & less expensive setup.

you need 2 light sources, one brighter than the other, and at a 90 deg angle with the second. getting the water to move is also easy, you were right about Rain-X, but you only put it on the areas where you want water to move, for some reason a 2 inch swath of it on a pain of glass encourages large drops to funnel right down the middle.
