Common mistake is also exposing the ext moonlight as much as the interior practicals. Moonlight compared to interior lights are usually really dim and it would certainly add more realism if you dimmed that ext light by a lot !

I love the video format of taking the most bare bones approach and slowing ramping it up while explaining what you're changing each iteratoin until you arrive at the final result. Somehow makes the whole explaination more intuative than dumping the steps all at once. Amazing video.

This is a great in depth video. The only thing I would add is that with moonlight and sunlight is that within the room you need some soft spill light from outside as the sun/moon would hit the surrounding environment outside and supply some subtle level into the room in addition to the hard light. This can be easily done with an additional soft unit outside or a skip bounce inside to bring the room tone up. I find that soft moonlight in the shadows is also a nice trick when you aren’t using hard moonlight through a window. Just my two cents! Thanks for sharing your insights :)

6:30 well, they are most sensitive to green light, but if I remember correctly, there is a phenomenon where in low light, sensitivity to blue increases more than red and green. This is also used in film making to make things look brighter than white by making colours warmer, and appear darker than screens can typically display by using more blue, or cooler colours. Great video!

Love it! The CRLS kits have been THE next thing on my list to buy asap for the accurate lighting needed to simulate the sun and moon! I'd be curious if you can get the same color by putting the gels on a CRLS kit!? Or RGB lights. I like blue/green tinted moonlight BUT i super like silver. If anyone is curious, Shane Hurlbut's Silver Moonlight look is achieved by white balancing Tungsten lights to 2800K NOT 3200K on the camera. I think it also works with LED's that are set to 3200K but it's the subtlest of differences between them.

Amazing video! I am not kidding... I was lighting a scene experimenting with moon-light yesterday and used a lot of your tips, and when I was finished, I went to KZbin and saw you uploaded this video. I should have seen this before. Mirrors is a genius thing. I want to experiment more with that, it makes lighting so much more interesting. One question, I want moonlight in a scene shot indoors for a short film, where it is supposed to rain outside, I know it makes no sense with moonlight when it is raining, but do you have any idea how to get that realistic? It is also so that you can see the rain on the window, as water need backlight to show on the camera. No idea if it is even possible to combine these two things? Keep making these amazing tutorials, William :-)

Thank you for the detailed explanations! Just a question- when you showed the example with the moonlight coexisting with the lamps in your shot and in other movies, to me that always read more like the environmental light/ street lights reflecting streetlights from other surfaces more than "moonlight" specifically and so felt more realistic, is it always intended as moonlight?

Hey I like the look, but i do have some feedback. I think if you are going for a more stylized look, then this look works, however if you are looking for the "PERFECT MOONLIGHT" in a more naturalist way, i would suggest using a softer bounce panel like the crls panels to give your moonlight a softer spread and glow, also it would help the viewer to see a little bit of the darkness of the night which makes it more believable, yes you might lose output but i think it looks more natural that way. What you could do to bring up the overall levels inside, is you could bounce light onto a 4x4 beadboard and use your light meter to meter your ratios to match the level of your moonlight on the talents face, THIS WOULD ALSO PROVIDE A MUCH NEEDED EYE LIGHT :) Id also bring your light source even higher and tilted downwards. I do like how you mixed the blue and green gels, i've tried that before and got decent results.. Like i said overall good image, keep putting out more bangers. excited to see what you come up with NEXT :)
