As expected, some of the state's top recruits were shining Friday night during the Class 6A championship game. And while Alabama commits Ryan Williams of Saraland and Jaylen Mbakwe of Clay-Chalkville made the plays on the offensive end to light up the scoreboard, it was a big defensive stop that decided the result.
With just five seconds remaining in the game, Saraland quarterback KJ Lacey took off toward the end zone but was stopped one-yard short by DJ Barber and Carlos Ivy. The tackle was the final play of the game as the Cougars got the stop they needed to secure a 31-28 victory, claiming their second state title in the last three seasons.
Mbakwe earned MVP honors, finishing with 152 yards and a score through the air while adding 130 yards and three touchdowns on the ground. Williams finished the night with 344 all-purpose yards and four touchdowns, equaling his scoring total from the 2022 championship game.
