They were a microcosm actually for all of their fellow aviators in the torpedo squadrons of task forces 16 and 17 that day I believe it was 15 launched from each carrier and only George Gay survived out of all the crews. That said I agree it would be a great tribute to all of the torpedo squadrons who bought the dive bombers that five minute window that changed history

I'm so glad I came across this band version of the piece - I played it in high school, and while I appreciate the original orchestral version, this one is _my_ original. And now I think of it, I wonder if this might be the best American military march since Sousa - especially with the syncopation and jazzy ending. Thanks for sharing!

Written before John Williams was JOHN WILLIAMS for a movie which really didn't capture the full drama of what was probably the greatest strategic victory the US Navy every had. There were two times that an invasion was turned back in WW2. Wake Island & Midway Atoll. At Midway the US Navy decimated the Nippon Navy's ability to project offensive power, making this the most important battle of the war. Williams captures both that, and at the same time the huge cost the US Navy paid via the understated opening and closing to the March. A brilliant achievement.
@erichonsowetz3535
@erichonsowetz3535 7 ай бұрын
I have heard various bands play this including the Marine Band & the Army Field Band. They all get it wrong. William's directing the studio orchestra is the only one that gets it right, because although it is a march, it doesn't start out that way. It starts out with single solos & at a slower tempo, the sounds of a navy which has survived, barely, a great battle, but really doesn't understand what has happened. At the start it is about all the dead from the battle, as it builds it is about the struggle, and at the end it is about the triumph of the end of that battle. Played strictly at march tempo the piece cannot tell that story.

@@davidb.8948 The traditional grip, wherein the left hand is palm up. It is arguably more formal, and it is particularly fitting for the snare in military bands due to their particular history (based on practicalities of early marching "harnesses" for snare which angled the drum slightly to the right).
@davidb.8948
@davidb.8948 3 жыл бұрын
@@kevinreilly51 yes, I know what traditional grip is. For me, I started off my first 15 years of drumming via Match Grip for both snare and set. It was all I was taught and knew, so I worked with it. It was when around 2007 when my drum teacher introduced me to French Grip and I never turned back. Huge improvement over Match Grip. Way more power and control, and I feel that it strongly rivals Traditional Grip any day as far as control/agility/playability. I can now say that Match Grip is for the birds.

I was surprised at the matched grip as well. I cannot get used to it. I even use traditional on drum kit even though it is more cumbersome to move to different drums and whatnot. And I know that traditional is so illogical to use for any reason, unless you are playing a field drum slung over your shoulder. Old habits die hard, I guess...

It has to be. As pointed out, this is a wind band, not an orchestra. Winds and brass have to double for the strings, etc. It's just different. My guess is that this was arranged by someone who really knows his business because, although John Williams is a composer of historical importance, wind band is not his usual instrument. Also, movie music is there to support the film, not the other way around, which is something that would have really irked someone like Beethovan.😊

As I mentioned the whole world before, Nichiren Daishonin, the Original Buddha of the latter age, or the days of 2000 years hereafter the Shakyamuni's passing, Counteracted the Mongol Empire's Attack and Occuapation of Japan by Very Fervent Daimoku Prayer! Namely, at that time, the Very Fierce Storm Generated and Mongol Army's Military ships were Sunk into the Sea! This is Definitely the so-called God Wind, or Kami-kaze, the Workings of the Guardian Deities for Buddhists who embrace the Lotus Sutra corectly, which protect them! In those days, Nichiren followers were just Minority in Japan. But Nichiren's Fervent Daimoku Invocation Summoned up the Very Powerful Protective Power of our Guardian Deities! And the Very Stupid Japanese Military Government of WWII days Miused this event by deceiving their people that God Wind would Never Fail to Blow for Japanese Troops and Attack US Troops Troops thoroughly and Smash them Completely with any G"roundless Reason"!
