LONG FERRY RIDE MAZATLAN TO LA PAZ, MEXICO (2021) BAJA FERRIES

I was in the town of Mazatlan in the west side of Mexico and about to go on a over night ferry ride across the gulf of California and in to the town of La Paz in the Baja California peninsula (with Baja Ferries). I had paid 1500 pesos for the ride that would take 17 hours over night. Watch the video to find out what I did on the ferry! I had also previously come from other towns in Mexico further down south in Zihuatanejo And Manzanillo.

A college buddy and I took the overnight ferry from La Paz to Mazatlan back in 1986. We opted for a room with 4 bunks -- the beds would not pass your bounce test, but they were comfortable enough to sleep throughout the 14 hour trip. If I recall, the cost was about $18 each. We started our trip the day before in Tijuana (TJ) on a Tres Estrellas bus, and rode through the night down the Baja penninsula. Three bus drivers on rotation -- one driver, one spotter looking out for wildlife and cattle on the highway (open grazing throughout Baja), and one guy sleeping on a mattress in the luggage compartment under the bus. We stayed awake all night listening to a mix of Pedro Vargas, Mariachi music, and Elvis blaring from the driver's boombox. Good times!

People like traveling at night because you can ignore time. You get the boat on Mazatlan, fall asleep, and wake up in BCS. Most people travel at night for that reason, companies use the slogan "you'll be there in the blink of an eye", it refers to falling sleep and waking up at your destination.

In '82 I remember staying at a hotel, which had once been a convent and getting bitten by bedbugs. I remember complaining about them and the maintenance guy was there in no time with no mask, and with a pump sprayer, the old fashioned kind with the canister at the end of the pump, spraying pesticide around the room and outside of the room. Those were some crazy times. I'm enjoying listening to your experiences and reflecting back on my own travels there.

The reason of the high ferry cost is because low demand, many people in Mexico prefers to use airplane between Mazatlan and Baja California (also because is faster), Ferry is mainly if you have a car to move between those 2 cities. Note both Bajas states are considered bordering states so that is why they ask many questions when arrive there, it is like entering Mexico again.

@@alexalejandro2910 I did the trip (in October/November) from Mazatlán to Puerto Vallarta to Manzanillo to Zihuatanejo to Acapulco then to Puerto Escondido. I really should have gone to Huatulco, but I took almost a month to do my trip and needed to get my breath! It was a very fun trip - and fairly easy except when the bus from Acapulco to Puerto Escondido changed their hours on me :)

Thanks for the Ferry insight. A bucket list must, but only once I think. La Paz, or the Peace, visited by Spanish explorers, but tough to live in. Enjoy the Beaches and tranquility, and local seafood or at least a damn Taco!

Sea sick. I came close to it once, when I was a young teenager on my fathers little 14 foot aluminum boat fishing on a lake In northern Ontario, it got really rough, steep choppy waves, my father told me I was going a little green in the face. However I’ve been on cruise ships in high rough stormy seas without any trouble, guess I learned to go with the flow. But a cruise ship is likely a lot different than a ferry. Stabilizers, some ability for the captain to maneuver and stuff like that. Go for a mid ship cabin, a middle deck which is the fulcrum so there is less rocking. The stern cabin can be bad party because of the proximity to the engines and propellers causing vibration and rumble. Also ginger is said to help, sea bands a patch as someone else said may help. But it’s sometimes an inner ear issue that causes it so these “remedies” could be just like buying a do-all medicine from a snake oil salesman! If you do try a normal large cruise ship vacation do a short 2, 3 or maybe 4 day trip, but remember the short cruises are sometimes full of a lot of locals close to the home port going out to blow off steam and have been nicknamed “booze cruises”. Try a newer ship which have the latest technology and are longer and heavier, 1000 feet long and the biggest ones weigh in at a gross 180,000 tons! They should call them sea monsters! Once again, CHEERS my friend‼️🍻🇨🇦🥂🇺🇸👍

It’s a lot cheaper to sail round the world on a cargo ship they have nice apartments in the accommodation tower. There is some risk as pirates or simply sinking is a possibility but I’ve known a couple of people who swear by it. Incidentally I’m glad to see your viewership continues to increase.Safe travels!

I told you before that it was not going to be like in Sweden. I remember, in Sweden, the only time we entered the ferry through the hull was inside the train cars to cross to Denmark. This La Paz ferry had a deep diesel smell, it also made us seasick. Then the restroom at the end was a mess. But that loud metallic music wasn't there when I traveled to la Paz. I remember that they dump tons of trash into the ocean in the middle of the night. When we complained to the crew, first they threatened us, then these La Paz ferry people told us a story that the trash goes to a place called the garbage ocean. OMG. Do they really believe it? we went back to Mazatlan on an airplane, less than an hour.

I think that the ferry we took at that time was made in Denmark. Maybe this one was made in Scandinavia too, since I saw a "Viking" plate somewhere in the video.
