Almost Retired in Mexico

Күн бұрын

La Paz Mexico is a great destination for Americans and Canadians looking to move south of the border. It's a medium size city that has not become "Americanized." Mexican culture is dominant unlike other expat locations like Los Cabos. In this video, I share some of the areas that are outside the tourist path. I want to share what Living in Mexico as an American looks like on a day-to-day basis in 2022.
This is by no means a perfect representation of "gringo La Paz." Everyone is different. Some people love shopping at Home Depot and others much prefer the local ferreterias. Same thing with groceries and entertainment. La Paz has all sorts of options that will fit whatever you're looking for. I made this video because no other videos on KZbin go beyond the Malecon and beaches. If you like this video, please give it a thumbs up!

To anybody reading these comments.... Last feb. after watching Brighton's videos I went to la Paz, stayed on the malecon, and it is amazing!!! very family friendly, not a party town. I went to Los Cabos, Cabo San Lucas, Todo Santos and Mexico City while I was down there and none of them compared to la Paz... 3 mi of boardwalk!!! Beautiful beaches, and so many restaurants it was hard to choose... I even hooked up with Brighton and his wife for drinks.... Here's how it affected me: I've been looking for real estate there ever since....

Definitely check it out. The summers are hot, but not too humid until the "rainy season" around Sept / October. But it only rains about 6" per year in La Paz. So there's not much rain. Lots of expats are only part-timers living in the US during the summer (or just traveling) and then Mexico from November thru May-ish.

I hope to meet you this winter at a Sunday happy hour. You're gonna love living in La Paz! CFE now requires you to have a RFC number, so you'll need to get that first. I think when you get your residency, you get a CURP number, and you can then turn that into a RFC number by visiting an office on the Malecon.

La Paz looks like. Are there areas which are good for expats to avoid? Or what about living out of town but still within a 20min drive of the city? I'm not a big fan of urban or even suburban areas and like 'space' ideally with trees for shade and not the typical urban sounds of people, vehicles and the hustle and bustle of a city. I'm a country boy at heart and would like live simply.

@AlmostRetiredinMexico
@AlmostRetiredinMexico Жыл бұрын
Go Badgers! I would drive down the peninsula for 2 reasons: 1) on the mainland you need to buy a permit to drive your car. Not needed on the peninsula. It’s called a TIP. 2) Topolobampo is in Sinaloa state. And that state can be a bit dangerous right now. They had a flare up of violence last month. So the US state department says “don’t go there.”

@AlmostRetiredinMexico
@AlmostRetiredinMexico 11 ай бұрын
The aquifer is being depleted. I know that the water agency recently stopped issuing new development permits because of the water supply. But I've also heard that those permits were recently issued. And the mayor published a warning about purchasing lots in a very large new development stating that they have no water rights. There are a couple of private desalination plants in La Paz (and dozens in Cabo) so I anticipate that desal plants will be built to accommodate future developments. I'd love to make a video about this, but I need to find an expert who will tell the truth on camera...

Have you been to Mulege? I am assuming probably yes. If so, how does it compare to La Paz? We are coming to La Paz on Feb 8th 2023 for 5 dyas and then to Cabo for another 5. I am looking at real estate in Mulege in a little community called The Orchard.
@AlmostRetiredinMexico
@AlmostRetiredinMexico Жыл бұрын
We've only driven thru. Mulege is small (4,000 people vs 250,000 in La Paz.) It's much more green than La Paz. But the Orchard is near the river (which is why it's green) and I thought a lot of areas near the river flooded last year. It's definitely a risk. But the 3 places you mentioned are all very different ;-)

Hi, how far from an airport is La Paz? Thanks
@AlmostRetiredinMexico
@AlmostRetiredinMexico Жыл бұрын
I should do a video about that! There is an international airport in La Paz, but there are only a few international flights per week. Most people fly in and out of Cabo (2.5 hours away) because flights are plentiful and usually less expensive.

The Malecon is beautiful but watch out for the local police. We had a rental car and got pulled over 3 times and had to pay a bribe once. The roads are terrible and full of large potholes. The city does not take care of many local streets which are in paved and get pretty messy when it rains. Nice place to visit, but would never live there after my experience. Take public transportation or you will be a tourist target!
@AlmostRetiredinMexico
@AlmostRetiredinMexico Жыл бұрын
Sorry you had that experience. I wonder if they target the rental cars. You ate totally right about the streets. This is definitely not the US when it comes to roads.

I can't win. If I pronounce it like a gringo (con) then the Mexican's point out my mispronunciation. But if I pronounce it like a Mexican, then the gringos tell me I'm mispronouncing it! So I typically go with how it's pronounced in Spanish. 🙄
