This was written by Wayne Carson, Johnny Christopher and Mark James, the first recording was by BJ Thomas in 1970, it was covered by Brenda Lee and Elvis Presley in 1972, however Willie Nelson received the only Grammy for his version in 1982.

You may have heard it first by Elvis but Willie wrote this song. As a younger person I was never a huge fan of his voice but I've grown to really appreciate how to me he is quite unique. And this man has written some of our most beautiful heart touching songs ever penned. Someone here mentions Seven Spanish Angels sung by Willie with Ray Charles. I concur. That song will move you as well. Share it with your grandfather. He likely knows it but he'll welcome a return visit.

This was also sung by Elvis Presley which was a Love Song to his True Love Priscilla who divorced him after Six Years Of Marriage. She loved him but he was so wrapped up in his Career she felt that she was taking a back seat to him, his friends and most of all his Career.

Your sense about Willie is probably right. He's had a tremendously long career as both a performer and a songwriter (for instance he wrote Patsy Cline's classic "Crazy"). He's famous for his fondness for cannabis, but hey, so was Louis Armstrong. And I have a feeling, James, that you'd particularly respect someone who was kind to animals. Willie, not long ago, rescued a slew of horses that were going to be euthanized and had them brought to his ranch to live out their days. Apparently that's just the sort of thing Willie does. He's well up there in years but still performing and recording as always. And he has put out several albums of big band era standards over the years, too, the first of which, in 1979, sparked a revival of interest in that music, leading to a number of other contemporary artists also recording that kind of material...

AOMM is a very deep song covered by many. I grew up first knowing and loving Elvis' version which was recorded in the aftermath of his divorce from Priscilla. Then Willie did his sublime version a decade or so later. I love both versions equally. Both of them did an amazing job with the song.

Willie won an Emmy with it... Before recording, Willie's early success was via song writing, among the biggest of artists owe successful hits to Willie's writing...

I have to say, I absolutely cannot stand country music, but I LOVE Willie Nelson. He's such a great singer-songwriter, and I love his music and the work he's done more socially and politically, including his efforts with Farm Aid to raise money for struggling small farmers.

This song reminds me of my ex. It came out while we were engaged. Willie did this song perfectly. I get sad every time I hear it. My ex would sing along with it, cos it fit him perfectly!
