True sentiments, they are both American treasures whose voices are more important than ever in our tumultuous times regardless of their age. These men have a conscience, and have always spoke to our consciences during troubled times. As we continue to face Covid, mass shootings, Putin's assault on poor Ukraine, we need our great poets & rock stars to come forward like they did in the 1960's. We need their message songs to educate & inspire us, to raise our consciousness and call us to action. Crosby, Stills & Nash, Neil Young, and Bono of U2 fit this category well too. I love Dylan and Nelson, and their moving version of this great song Poncho & Lefty. They may be old now, but they're not going anywhere just yet, they are national treasures! I hope they stay around long enough to teach & inspire the next great batch of songwriters and musicians to follow in their footsteps and carry on the tradition. Thank God for these two legends!

I met Townes Van Zandt in 1970 when I was in college and he invited a friend and I to play a short opening set for him. Ever since I have been "promoting" him as one of the all-time great songwriter/poets. If nothing else does, seeing Bob Dylan doing one of his songs confirms that.

Both great songwriters. One has limitations as a singer though. Listen to Dylan's version of Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah. He uses a lot of less commonly used verses that are very effective. "There's a ray of light in every word. It doesn't matter what you heard , the broken or the holy Hallelujah." He's a poet, and was able to pick out a lot of the most poetic verses.

Townes did not have an easy life. Bi-polar, he suffered insulin shock therapy in a misguided attempt to treat him. It destroyed his short term memory. He was severely alcoholic and when in the depressive phase of his bi-polar illness he took heroin, to which he inevitably became addicted. For most of the 1970s he lived in a shack outside Houston Texas, with no running water or electricity. It is hardly surprising he died young. Some say he was the greatest singer songwriter ever, and I agree.

@Willie Nelson 🔵 Thank you for the reply sir! I have been listening and admiring your songwriting and your performances for most of my sixty four years. “Blue Eyes Crying In The Rain” was among one of the first songs that I admired and was inspired much by….at around the age of seventeen I was learning to accompany my own vocals and that great song was one of the first I was inspired to learn. I would many years later accompany my daughter as she was learning to sing, and “Crazy” was among the favorites chosen. I had the good fortune to see Mr. Bob Dylan live many years ago back in the mid seventies. Unfortunately I have yet to be that fortunate regarding any in person live performances of yours; I’m still holding out hope though so please don’t ever retire…your music just keeps getting better! I’ve always been a fan, always will be a fan! I hope that you know that to many of us fans You Sir Are A National Treasure.

Me too! My stock answer to which of his songs I like best is, "Usually the one I'm listening to," but I'd probably go with Desolation Row and Idiot Wind, though it pains me to leave out many others!

He has no choice, Pancho always starts that song. Willie gets the floor, and then when Lefty starts his part, Dylan steps up and has the floor...Respect yes but more courtesy check so as not to crowd each other's tale...

@@northsacmac4793 Oh, right. What year was this, do you know? And another question: how tall was Dylan back then? The internet says he was only 5 feet 7 but he looks much taller than that.

Can't compete with the lovely comments ! So agree . I think Bob Dylan has been so underestimated ( probably as he hates being intervorwed) but i think a modern day poet of extreme understanding. Just love this. Lovr Willie Nelson also.
