This is it as far as I'm concerned. Willy and Bradford Marsalis shredding it and everyone in the band is just amazing. This kind of convergence only happens once in a while. We're so lucky to have it happen here.

Willie Nelson kills on these old standards because he has such a lovely and fine light touch. There's a delicacy to his playing, his voice, everything about him that just enhances these songs so well. A great version from one of my favorite albums of all time.

Legend has it, Willie's plane landed late in L.A. and he didn't get a chance to rehearse with Branford Marsalis and the band prior to this performance. But check out that smile at the end. Willie knows how great that band is and how excellent that performance was. Or maybe it's just the reefer ...

It's not just the pot. Willie is a decent, down to earth guy. He respects people, and can appreciate when someone can support him like that, helping him to sound his best. Willie is reportedly *not* an easy guy to follow, musically, when playing with him. As some musicians have said, he has "jazz phrasing" and is so fluid around the beat, that you have to flow with him to find your place in the music.

Hoagy Carmichael From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Hoagy Carmichael - 1947.jpg Carmichael in 1947 Background information Birth name Hoagland Howard Carmichael[1] Born November 22, 1899 Bloomington, Indiana, United States Died December 27, 1981 (aged 82) Rancho Mirage, California, United States Genres Musical films, popular songs Occupation(s) Songwriter, musician, actor, attorney Instruments Piano, vocals Years active 1918-1981 Associated acts Sidney Arodin, Louis Armstrong, Fred Astaire, Bix Beiderbecke, Ray Charles, Bing Crosby, Jimmy Dorsey, Tommy Dorsey, Duke Ellington, Helen Forrest, Harry James, Spike Jones, Frank Loesser, Johnny Mercer, Glenn Miller, Dinah Shore, Jack Teagarden, Paul Whiteman Website Hoagy Carmichael Hoagland Howard "Hoagy" Carmichael (November 22, 1899 - December 27, 1981) was an American singer, songwriter, and actor. American composer and author Alec Wilder described Carmichael as the "most talented, inventive, sophisticated and jazz-oriented of all the great craftsmen" of pop songs in the first half of the twentieth century.[2] Carmichael was one of the most successful Tin Pan Alley songwriters of the 1930s, and was among the first singer-songwriters in the age of mass media to utilize new communication technologies, such as television and the use of electronic microphones and sound recordings. Carmichael composed several hundred songs, including fifty that achieved hit record status. He is best known for composing the music for "Stardust", "Georgia on My Mind" (lyrics by Stuart Gorrell), "The Nearness of You", and "Heart and Soul" (in collaboration with lyricist Frank Loesser), four of the most-recorded American songs of all time.[3] He also collaborated with lyricist Johnny Mercer on "Lazybones" and "Skylark." Carmichael's "Ole Buttermilk Sky" was an Academy Award nominee in 1946 (from Canyon Passage, in which he co-starred as a musician riding a mule); "In the Cool, Cool, Cool of the Evening," with lyrics by Mercer, won the Academy Award for Best Original Song in 1951. Carmichael also appeared as a character actor and musical performer in 14 motion pictures, hosted three musical-variety radio programs, performed on television, and wrote two autobiographies.

Sometimes I wonder, how I spend The lonely night dreaming of a song The melody haunts my reverie And I am once again with you When our love was new And each kiss an inspiration But, but that was long ago Now my consolation is in the stardust of a song Beside the garden wall When stars are bright, you are in my arms The nightingale, tells his fairytale Of paradise, where roses grew Though I dream in vain In my heart it will remain My stardust melody The memory of love's refrain Though I dream in vain In my heart it will remain My stardust melody The memory of love's refrain

With all due respect, the man who should be credited for this timeless composition is Hoagie Carmichael, while Willie Nelson is just one of hundreds famous people who covered this song (Louis Armstrong, Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Nat's daughter Natalie Cole etc... just to name a few). I'm not Willie Nelson hater. I've read all his books, listen to all his timeless songs and admire the man but, the "Stardust" is just his cover not a composition as *"willietribute2000"* implied in his footnote to the video. Willie made a serious error of judgment when he decided to omit the first verse of Stardust. You can't earn the honour of having performed the definitive version by singing an incomplete version. @@kayepointer1536 That gentleman is absolutely playing that guitar. And he has been playing that same guitar since the 1970s at least.

He is talented for sure, but after reading his autobiography, you realize he worked his butt off and hustled for years before really hitting the big time.

Leno blows it at the outset in this performance. This is not written by (Willie Nelson) 'his classic'... The song has a very long history. It's a jazz standard, "Stardust" is a 1927 song composed by Hoagy Carmichael, with lyrics later added by Mitchell Parish". (source: Wikipedia). I like Nelson's performance here, but the audio on it is just swimming all over the place.

I wish people who post these videos put the dates of the performance! Apparently the performance was in 1993 or 1994--but it would be nice if the poster did the research and put it in the notes.

I know none of you recall this particular version but the one that introduced to me this beautiful and haunting song was Ringo Starr from his first post-Beatles album Sentimental Journey. I still have an attachment to that cover.
