Thank you for this video of the great Willie Pep in action. This fight took place after his championship days, but it was wonderful to see his great fighting spirit as well as skills. A truly great fighting man!!!! His opponent, Armand Savoie, was emblematic of the tough and talented fighters that made that boxing era so entertaining for true boxing fans.

To give some background (since most people won't bother to look it up), while only 30 years old Pep was clearly past his best at the point of this fight. By 1952 he had been fighting for 12 years and 172 fights (166-5-1) not to mention also having been badly injured in a plane crash in 1947 after which he had been advised to retire. Even at this stage of his career he still shows considerable skill in controlling the range, getting off and moving away and preventing his opponent from getting his punches off, tying him up whenever he got close and even mixing it up when he had to late in the fight. Amazingly enough Pep had another 70 fights after this!

Pep was crazy, Edwin survived a motor crash although it got him crazy, Paz survived a car accident but recovered and managed to "controversially" beat Duran, but Willie got an accident with a literal plane and still dances around, sometimes footworks are ageless.

Love watching Pep fights nothing like them the way he triples the jab while moving to the side is a trademark of him and he knew all the tricks, dirty n otherwise. Great choice, I’ve been watching something about Jake LaMotta and it reminds me of when I read his autobiography, I won’t spoil it for anyone but I was surprised how honest and genuinely bad he was, much worse than the film. Not a great book but shocking in one part.
