Broderick Crawford won an Academy Award as best actor of 1949 for his role as a ruthless, scheming Southern political boss in "All the King's Men" but was better-known to later generations as the beefy chief of television's "Highway Patrol."

I guess that's the reason for the "I don't care if you are Broderick Crawford" line from the highway patrol cop to Jackie Gleason in the first Smokey and the Bandit film. God, that's funny.

Just was watching a clip of the movie SWiNG TIME, with a wonderful character actress known for her comedic presence on screen: Helen Broderick. Mother of Broderick Crawford. In one scene she stops, and just watches the other actor onscreen opposite her. And you can see her son's features in hers. Great DNA....As for that remake of ATKM? .Hey, I really like Sean Penn, but don't anybody EVER confuse these two versions of a timely classic. The Broderick Crawford 1949 version (the year I was born) chewed up and spat out the 2006 one... against the wall.

HPL was a complicated man. Conflicted feeling about him? Not surprising. Note to history buffs: look for the T Harry Williams definitive bio on Long. Louisiana fared better than most states during the Depression BECAUSE he kept so many people (black and white, BTW) working - on construction of highways, bridges, buildings. Before his time - we were 'tobacco road dirt poor shoeless, illiterate, etc..We still feel the positive effects of Long's 'pushy administration" in 2021. Was he guilty of some real shady stuff? You betcha. Did he change the face of this state forever and always? Yes, indeed.
@LordZontar
@LordZontar 3 жыл бұрын
Huey was a crook and a dictator. He also was a great man who dragged Louisiana fully into the 20th century, gave it a modern school system and health care system which has since been dismantled. And he destroyed democracy in Louisiana and threatened to do that to the whole of America. And he had big ideas. Yes, a very complicated man was Huey Long, a man you can't just make a snap judgment on.

Can anybody tell why I like this version more than the one with Johnny Depp? I would say Depp's version is shit, but I don't want to insult shit. The only point which Depp made in his movie was speaking with completely incomprehensible Southern accent, which isn't actually used by real people (not by governors, that's for sure) for the last 100 years. I can easily prove my point - view footage of Governor (Senator) Huye Long on whom Willie Stark's character is based. Long was from Louisiana, and he talks like a normal person, not like a hill billie snake handler from Kentucky

Johnny depp? You are confusing me. However I really appreciate your point, even if it is about Sean Penn and not Johnny Depp. All these modern actors are the same anyways. I saw the trailer with Sean penn, and everyone was talking about this one so I looked. I haven't seen either movie. But I was really puzzled by Sean Penn's accent, because the Louisiana accent is very distinctive and it sounds absolutely nothing like that. I don't think Sean Penn knows anything about louisiana! I don't even know anything about Louisiana but I I know that. So thank you for writing that comment. It and others like it reassured me that my ear was not crazy.
