Always liked willie thorne, he would always joke with the audience and was one of the few attacking players of snooker, if a shot was only 50-50 he would go for the pot. Plus he was only 32 here and looks 50, shows how times have changed, RIP

Great video. Willie Thorne was one hell of a player back in the day (better than some, including myself, give him credit for). He potted some crackers here - but he did miss a few suspect shots - and this is maybe why he didn’t win as much as perhaps he should have? Also Hendry’s safety was decent for a 17 year old. I always thought of him as a potting machine, but obviously all the knowledge of angles is good for safety too

Can I ask what the feeling was at the time regarding Willie Thorne being fancied for the title? Certainly he was a very capable player but from looking at the 85-86 season leading up to Sheffield I'd say the in form players were Steve Davis, Terry Griffiths, Jimmy White and Cliff Thorburn. Willie had never progressed beyond the QF stages so I'm curious of the presenters comments at that time. I ask this with the utmost respect to the player.

Not sure when it happened, but they reinforced the floor at some point. There used to be stilts under the floor to give the tables support, without them it was discovered the tables soon began to roll off.
