What is a storm welt vs goodwear welt? And what's 270° vs 360° stitching? Beautiful boots as always! Hope you enjoy those!

A storm welt has a piece of leather that travels up the side of the boot slightly. It’s the ridge that you can see just inside the welt stitching ( a split welt is very similar in appearance). A flat welt is just that. A flat welt that has no ridge. A “Goodyear welt” is a specific construction type that uses a Goodyear welt machine. It uses a canvas rib (gemming) attached to the footbed. The welt is then attached via said machine, stitching it through the upper of a boot and into that canvas rib. As you can imagine, this is very difficult to explain without pictures. Googling these terms will make it easier to understand.

I forgot the 270 vs 360. This just describes how far around the boot that the welt goes. A 270 welt usually ends just behind the front face of the heel block, then using something called a “heel Rand” to cover the heel area. A 360 welt will go all the way around the boot and is usually spliced on the medial side, right near your arch.

@@everyone_else_fault412 I'd add that typically a real storm welt is glued or sewn onto the upper as well as the usual Goodyear welt being ”vertical stitches” thru the leather welt, the midsole and potentially the outsole as well. Essentially the GY welt is attached to the shoe upper and insole and then the rest of the sole is attached to the the welt in a separate series of stitches. Edited for error, stitches are holes and thread wicks moisture so I was exactly wrong that storm welts are necessarily sewn into the upper, can be a split welt where the leather naturally ”pushes” due to the leather. Norwegian storm welts are a distinct way of achieving the same purpose. The storm welt is very similar to a split welt and likely have similar purposes, to prevent dirt, debris entering the gap between the upper and the GY welt which can wear away the stitches and leather. I highly recommend finding a good resoling or restoration video to really see the step by step breakdown and crafting.
