There's the sports issue and then there's stuff like "Men can get pregnant", "There's no danger in letting T women into women's locker rooms", "Giving young teens puberty blockers is no big deal", etc. And all of that is basically people trying to ignore reality to win arguments.

Unfortunately Jaffa is not informed on the trans athlete debate. We currently do not have the science, or at least it has not been tested, for us to combine genders and separate by other variables. For example, the testing that has been done, shows that trans athlete hold a distinct physical advantage over female athletes. This does not mean trans athletes should be banned from sports, of course not. But by letting them compete against females, it is literally undoing the benefits and fairness gained from separating male and females in sports. DO NOT TAKE MY WORD FOR IT. Please look at Ross Tucker’s research. He is one of the most studied professors on this topic
@VariantAEC2 жыл бұрын
It is self evident that trans women have an overwhelming advantage in sports. I agree that there is no science that calculates the changes that time on T gives men over women and unfortunately for trans men they cannot reap the same advantages biological males get from a lifetime of internally manufactured testosterone secretions. The sum of those changes is immense from the phenotypic appearance to the morphological distinctions to even the way men sound is all driven primarily by that one hormone and even more importantly the individuals genetics. Biological women on male levels of T can end tragically with heart wall thickening or enlargement (which is not good for anyone), can seemingly damage other organs and causes changes to the brains of transmen (and likely transwomen too) that are not well understood. There are all kinds of things that Jaffe doesn't appear to know. Makes me wonder about what the doctors told him and his son?

Great show as always. But I do mildly wish Colin would’ve pushed back a bit more on the trans athletes thing. Specifically Jaffe’s claim (which he‘s always made about social issues such as these) that most people “don’t actually have a problem with fairness, they’re just transphobes” in disguise. THAT rhetoric is _one of the things_ that I feel really divides us as a society. It’s those ultra-dismissive, reductive, and [perhaps unintentionally] misleading comments that completely misrepresent and thus alienate an entire side of this debate. He says it about people who don’t like the Disney “gay-quota” (“they’re just phobic”), he’s said it about the majority of Trump supporters (“they’re overwhelmingly white Christian racists”), the people who support the Florida bill (“they’re _mostly_ Christian Karens who think gayness is a sickness”) etc etc. What about the GIANT swath of people (like me, and I think like Colin) who have NO issues with gay people, NO issue with people transitioning to wtvr they want, NO religious affiliation, NO feelings of racial superiority, NO desire to stifle or alienate anyone based on race, etc etc.... but that have an issue with the trans athletes? Or think giving a young, developing child hormones is probably ill-advised. Or that don’t want their kids (just between kindergarten - 3rd grade) in public school to be spoken to about sexual identity.
@quaternio2 жыл бұрын
Why does Colin need to “push back” though? Colin said what he thought of it, and David spoke his disagreement. We need to aspire to be able to listen to people with whom we disagree. I would encourage any human that think they disagree with the Florida Parental Rights in Education Bill to actually read it to understand what it’s even about. Most of it is in regards to transparency of curriculum and medical care. It restricts classroom curriculum and group discussion on sex and gender identity for kindergarten to 3rd grade. It does not even restrict natural conversations about life that may include any kind of family dynamics. Even the Florida legislators said that it would not restrict normal conversation at all, and it would only restrict curriculum and classroom discussion, so a teacher can’t say “Let’s all talk about our gender identity.” or “Let’s all talk about sex.” If you’re still against that type of legislation for 5 and 8 year old children, then I don’t really know what to say. While I didn’t usually enjoy his games, I appreciate some of what Jaffe did for the industry; however, he tends to mischaracterize anyone that is even slightly to the right, and he lands on many inconsistent positions.

While I thing Jaffe's right that some with only the intention to hate will jump on conversations like the trans athlete one to onboard their intolerance I think he overgeneralises that type of person to the broader conversation and his briefly mentioned arguments in regards to breaking down he categorisations in sports are quite shallow. Just because colloquially people down give af about women's sports doesn't mean that institutionally it should be taken apart. The suggestion that sports should take up the boxing model is a snake that eats it's own tale because to find equivalent opponents that share the same lean muscle mass, bone structures, height (etc, etc) the most discerning factor as to find that equivalence would could around to being sex again. Basically for two people to be the same height and have the same generic muscle structure's etc they'd 9/10 be the same sex - therefore you'd basically get to a point where you've re-invented the sex category anyway but without women having a protected class, so it's the the gain of an *idea* of inclusion, with all the loss of the dissolution of women's categories. That's not to mention that this set up would basically just end up being male dominated anyway - it's literally a non-solution that sounds good on paper but is either cyclical in reasoning (recreates Sex categories), or causes more issues (No protected class for Cis-Women). All that goes without mentioning the fact that a lot of sport technically operate in open categorisation, but because of the higher competitive advantage that men, they end up dominating the roster of teams/play-offs (see: Tennis). This would be a natural spot were trans-athletes can compete, that's right under our noses but isn't really discussed. And finally Jaffe bringing up E-Sports as an example of gender openness in sports without the OBVIOUS caveat that E-Sports isn't a physical sport - the argument for that being disanalogous writes itself. I'll allow myself this long internet comment paragraph, lol, because I actually love Moriarty and Jaffe together, I think these two are a great example of conversations needed more within the industry and also a really good balance between progressive and conservative ideas where the middle ground seems to be opening up the more this continues. This is why I support Last Stand, good chats and I hope and look forward to/for more to come:)

(Edit- I appreciate these conversations but the argument that “when did anyone give a fuck about woman’s sport” shows just how far the thinking is, it’s not phobic at all to not want to see biological females marginalised by biological males in their sport. I feel that the nuance is put aside to just label those asking questions as bigots). Also, who here wouldn’t want to be Chris Rock? Funny as hell and rich. I don’t currently have any daughters, and I don’t have family that compete in women’s sports, so I don’t care about women’s sports. I do care about the general well fare of women though. I’m not okay with biological men dominating females in sport and keeping them from getting scholarships that could change their entire future. I’m also not okay with biological men fighting and seriously injuring females, because this has happened many times with trans “athletes”. Just because you don’t care about women’s sports, that doesn’t mean you should be fine when someone who identified as a man 95% of their life knocks out a female. Biology and science exists. His idea of joining everyone and separating by weight class won’t work. I weighed barely more than my wife when we got married. I could pick her up no problem. She couldn’t make me roll over in the bed. We started working out together. I gained over 30 lbs of muscle in no time. She gained 7 lbs. Men and women are different. When Jaffe says something like, "If I want to know about *insert group here*, I ask someone from *insert group here*", he makes it seem like that one person he asks is representative of the entire group of people when they are not. Also, my niece is going to college on a sports scholarship, so it's a bit dismissive to say no one cares about women's sports. For a lot of parents, a sports scholarship might be the only way they can afford to send their child to school. I'm not trying to badmouth Mr. Jaffe at all and respect his opinion, but these were just two things I disagreed with.

I have this weird duality with gaming at present. The only way to get $200 million AAA releases is to have companies invest in their own ecosystems. However, the companies can no longer sustain the model without making business decisions that I hate. They’re all heavily guilty of it now and there’s no alternative haven to invest in besides PC.. which gets first class treatment when it comes to these business practices but hasn’t had priority with these kind of games. Also, it involves a much higher recurring investment in terms of time, patience, and capital. So you have to take the good with the bad wherever you go. It has been hard to see PlayStation change these last few years.

Jaffe thinks people hate trans people because they want boys and girls to play in their own leagues? Have you seen what boys do against grown up women in soccer and hockey? We literally have 13 year olds beating the adults with big scores. for ex the boys with 1 less player took out australias national womens team with 7-0. against boys. what the hell do you think would happend against adults? and disney grooming kids? no, I dont agree with that but the same people who calls that a crazy conspiracy says its indoctrination to take your kid to a church every sunday, as they put chemicals in their kids and says they are in their wrong body.

This comment made me remember how me and my classmates (boys) beat our high school girls handball team back in the nineties. Our teacher arranged that as a part of their training. There were only two boys among us who had played handball before. It was a bit funny at first, but quickly became sad. And actually dangerous, they were so fragile.
@quezcatol2 жыл бұрын
@@robertolbert3585 one of the adults in the women soccer national team for australia was literally crying as they lost to the boys with 7-0. I dont mock her for that, I just think its wrong to do this to them.

@@robertolbert3585 Fragile? Mentally, physically or both? Frankly if what you said was true, I think what that teacher did to the girls team as part of "their training" was pretty messed up.
@robertolbert35852 жыл бұрын
@@VariantAEC If I remember correctly, they were dominating their national league (on their age level here in Slovakia) and were not facing challenging opponents regularly. So this match was arranged by our teacher and their coach. Fragile I mean physically, they simply could not stop us, and I had to be careful to not hurt anyone especially while breaking through their "defense". After some time, the teacher actually asked us to stop "showing off", because the goalkeeper started to avoiding stronger shots instead of catching. Literally: "Come on guys, not every shot has to be the strongest you can do!" I remember it all quite clearly, because it was my only handball match in my whole life. They had to explain the rules to me. I was chosen to participate because I was football (soccer) goalkeeper for our village team, which was considered good enough experience.

The answer is to ban pronouns and just use people's names. That would solve a ton of problems. Also the "nonsense" going on in Florida is absolutely fine. I want a school to teach math, English, science, geography and history, that's it. Leave all the other stuff to families. No religion, no sexuality (straight or whatever). The answer to all of it should be "ask your parents."

I’ve tried, as an adult, to have as many hardware platforms as I could. That way I’m not limiting my own gaming experiences. I can, however, call out a bad game, gaming experience, piece of hardware, etc. Fanboyism is tribalistic behavior for idiots and simpletons. There’s always those just looking to troll, but they’ll always be subhuman pieces of garbage. 🤷♂️
@Donald_Allan2 жыл бұрын
Well said. I own a Xbox Series X, PS5 and Nintendo Switch and think it's great that I get to experience the best that all platforms have to offer. I think that fanboyism is just stupid and is just unnecessary. I just wish that we could go back to a time where people didn't have fights or arguments over which games they played or what systems they played their games on.
@isturbo19842 жыл бұрын
I try to own and play on all platforms as well. When you do that, the shortcomings of each of them become mighty apparent! And when you speak out against them, you ironically get called a fanboy by the troglodytes who can't criticize their favorite plastic box. Really, its the hypocritical element in there which is loathsome to me.

It's ridiculous because we're talking about made to be affordable mass produced gaming consoles here. There's nothing special or privileged about owning a Playstation or Xbox or PC. Any adult with a job that wants to buy one of these things or all of them can, which is why it's so ridiculous to see some of these people who behave like God himself descended from the heavens to hand pick them to own the best console.
@VariantAEC2 жыл бұрын
@@TerraWare When were PCs made to be powerful enough to play games well at with console like settings or better at 60hz and be affordable? Many of the games coming out now run like doo on a PC when trying to be competitive with consoles and according to the Steam Hardware Survey the GPU in my PC reigns supreme (the GTX 1070) which to many PC enthusiasts online (read "PC fanboys") is low-end. I just looked at the cost of building a new PC and even with the monumental help of my very healthy tax return I couldn't afford to make the PC capable of competing with a PS5 or Xbox Series X. Consoles are made to be cheap by way of mass production... PCs are not (save for Steam Deck which hopefully won't meet the same fate as Steam PCs).
@TerraWare2 жыл бұрын
@@VariantAEC Consoles offer pretty good value especially their first couple of years and especially these consoles. That said it's all relative. For example most pc players don't have high end gear but also most console players are on PS4 and Xbox One/ Switch as well. It depends on what your needs are, the games you're into, where your friends are etc. In my opinion consoles aren't really directly comparable to pc's because a pc can do so much more functionality wise. Even a pc with equivalent gaming performance to todays consoles performance, you can customize your gaming experience to your liking. Maybe around a lower resolution high fps experience or higher resolution lower fps experience, something in between, multiple monitor setup etc. It's backwards compatible with everything, including emulating all older consoles, all older games are enhanced because of your hardware. You can run a KZbin channel, create content, stream etc etc. Of course that may mean nothing to a lot of people and that's fine. Consoles offer a streamlined experience where gaming is the focus and the user experience is made to be as simple as possible although that seems to be changing because consoles are getting quite complicated with their features which is a good thing imo.

I don't fault Microsoft or hold anything against them for enriching the leadership of Activision. I see it as the thousands of Activision employees being saved and work for a better company (hopefully). The leadership of Activision would remain plenty rich even if Activision crumbled down and all the employees were left jobless. I see it like Elon Musk buying Twitter in a way. A good thing.

What i fear is that Sony will do the bare minimum with the BC games on the new PS Plus service, it will fail because they did the bare minimum and then point at it as a justification that "noone wants to play old games". What i want them to do is two things, first they need to offer a way to buy those games, not just offer them as a sub thing and second they need to enhance them like you can on PC emulators. You can play PS1, PS2 and PSP games with texture filtering, 4K upscaling, fixing texture and polygon issues in PS1 games on PC and they look awesome, i REALLY hope Sony puts in the effort on their emulators.

Great episode, great content. That last 30 minutes or so was rough though. At the end of the day, I cannot be told someone has gone from 400 something in mens to number 1 in women’s and come to the conclusion that there isn’t as distinct biological advantage. I implore everyone to live their life and identity as they see fit but sports are about the biology of the person, not their gender identity. That can be said without being a “-fobe” of some kind.
