A 100% ROI does not mean “making your money back” or “breaking even”. That would be a 0% ROI. 100% ROI means you got back as much IN PROFIT as you originally invested. His talking points are so frequently contradictory, hypocritical and "straw-manned" while also being disingenuous as if he knows what he's saying isn't the truth but if he says it quick enough and just barrels on through he will get away with it being taken as fact. You're right about his CV though. So if he's giving opinions on creative direction in video games or even other media yeah he should be listened to and his opinion valued. But his CV doesn't do anything to legitimise his heinously flawed and emotionally motivated viewpoints.

I want to push back on the GOTY's lack of importance. While the hardcore gaming community will listen to these massive podcasts and stay up to date on the news and the cultural touchstones having a list of GOTY nominations is a great way for more casual players to check out some games that are just guaranteed to be solid. Back on the 360 when I was only playing CoD or Halo, I remember my brother would always just snag whatever the GOTY was for me as a Christmas gift. He doesn't know Jack about video games but it was a safe choice to give to the gamer in the house. As I got more into games, I would look at the nominations and try them and eventually, I got to the point I started to keep up with the industry. The game awards are not the DICE awards, but they are still incredibly important to bring light to games like Belatro or even Metaphor. Not everyone is as entrenched in this industry as us.

I disagree with Colin that the TGAs are meaningless. I think a rewards show is good for the industry because it not only legitimizes the medium based on social expectations, but also allows those of us that love games a moment if celebration for our year. I will agree though that something needs to change. Perhaps more curation or even an increased percentage of fan vote could offset some of the clear bias these outlets exhibit. I'm not sure how it's done, but if there was a list for each nominee for outlets to nominate then certainly Erdtree should have not been on it. If there is no list, and it's entirely up to the outlets to come up with noms from memory, then that would explain how recency bias always creeps in. I think the "jury" needs to be expanded or manged in some way because some the nominees this year are laughably bad and out of touch with the overall community.

Shadow of the Erdtree Nomination over like a Silent Hill 2 for example. The very fact that you cannot play that without not only owning Elden Ring, but also have to play up to a certain point to even access it should immediately disqualify. If you look pretty much anywhere online or in forums you will see that most people are confused by that being nominated for the GOTY, when it's only an expansion. Another example would be multiversus for best fighting game. Not only did that take the spot of other fighting games like Rivals of Aether 2, etc, but it was also nominated and won in a previous year when it was merely a beta. It's ludicrous that a game that was already best fighting game and won before is being nominated here and snubbed other fighting games that released, for the first time, this year. All this shows is the gross lack of knowledge this jury has and how clearly somethimg needs to change. I loom at a lot of these nominees and it feels significantly more minority than majority. I have yet to see anybody not say something negative about this year's nominees whereas previous years that was not the case. The community is anybody that plays games, as this is an awards show for games, and yes, it's out of touch.

Hi, would like to reply to the question why people play on Easy? I play on Easy in everything when possible. Part of that is I have a disability that gives me a slower processing speed than most people. It not so bad IRL, but it noticeable in games that are hard. It gets a lot more frustrating trying overcome challenges that way. So some easy mode games feel like most people normal mode to me. The other reason is I really enjoy power fantasy that comes from easy modes. I enjoy feeling like one person army wiping out mobs of enemies and powerful bosses. So those are my reasons, Hope that helps at all.

I appreciate the Game Awards. I think this year's nominations for Goty are excellent and in general the Game Awards has tended to nominate and reward high-quality games. Especially God of War in 2018, Sekiro in 2019, Last of Us II in 2020, Elden Ring in 2022 and BG3 in 2023 were worthy Goty winners. All the other Goty winners have also been pretty decent picks. Nintendo has won only once, in 2017 with Zelda Botw, which I think did deserve to win that year. For me as someone who has read and watched games journalism for many decades, it's a breath of fresh air whenever there's an institution like the Game Awards that looks at video games from a more grown-up and artistic perspective, similar to how the Oscars view film.

I'm in the "no Epic Games Store" camp. I only use GOG and Steam. If a game is Epic exclusive I wait to buy until it's released on the other platforms. If Epic wants to be competitive they need to massively improve their product.

I understand why the crew chose the stance on the cheating situation that they did, but I completely disagree. If I was that person's wife, I would want to know. They mention only having the moral obligation if he knew them well, but withholding that information only to let that go on for who knows how long is the morally incorrect thing to do, in my view

Nah. It's not their business, and invites danger to their doorstep that could prove injurious to their health and safety. As they noted, the suspected adulterer could not only deduce their identity, but would also know their place of work-a place, mind you, where alcohol is present. On top of that, they'd be acting on assumptions regarding a situation they know next to nothing about with potentially ruinous repercussions for parties involved. All in all, a really dumb idea to get involved for the sake of _"morality"_

Had to comment on the bartender and cheating couple. I was a waiter/bartender for 10 yrs, and have seen this happen too many times to count. It was always harder to see it happen to my regulars, but you absolutely have to keep it to yourself. It’s almost like an unspoken code. It was never easy to see, but the tip money was too good to mess up a good thing

Forgoing morals in favor of money is a huge problem in this country. I was also a bartender and never had a code of keeping cheating a secret. Shame on you
