You're a good teacher Will. It's a pleasure watching your tutorials. I'm just learning the stuff I would have liked to have been shown almost 30 years ago at art school.

I have a still-life assignment for school to do and I was so intimidated by the idea of it (I've never used acrylic before) and your videos are simply amazing to watch! Thank you very much, this is extraordinarily helpful :)

I love three things about your video... 1) it isn't in superhuman fast speed without instruction. It is in real time with explanations. Yay! 2) You show the pallet, so we can see how you mix the paints 3) You refer to the reference photo so students can anticipate the next step of shadow, highlights and color EXCELLENT!! Thank you oh, and they are actually DOABLE for a beginner SO ENCOURAGING!!!

A glaze it to help enhance paint that is dry with a new veil of colour. It sits ontop of your underpainting, like a stained glass window.

I may not get an answer since this video is so old, but I'm very new to acrylics and I have a question. How do you get so little paint on your brush yet manage to spread it so smoothly? I keep having to go back and forth adding more and more to my brush because it ends up not spreading well. Not sure if it's the brush quality(blue turtle from amazon) or the paint quality (liquitex basics) or if I'm using the wrong paper (Canson Montval cold pressed) Thank you for your helpful videos.
@willkempartschool4 жыл бұрын
Hi Rose, it might be a combination of all three. The paper will be much more absorbent than canvas so it will soak up the paint much quicker and make the spread of the paint harder. Also, artist quality paints have a stronger 'pigment load' so will cover more easily than with student grade paints. The brush bristles will be able to move paint more or less easily depending on how stiff the bristles are. Hope this helps, Cheers, Will

Will, do you always keep your palette vertical next to the painting? I had assumed you only did that for the purpose of the video recording but I'm actually seeing some benefit to working like that!
@willkempartschool8 жыл бұрын
+Third Dimension Jewellery It depends on the size of the canvas, for small paintings, it can work really well as you can judge the colours in the same light as your painting. For larger scale pieces I tend to hand hold or have a palette on a separate table. Cheers, Will

I have practical on Monday that's tomorrow but I just want to ask can u do this type of painting on an ordinary paper ...something like A4 sheet paper please!?
@willkempartschool3 жыл бұрын
The A4 paper will tend to crinkle as you add the water as it isn't absorbent enough.

Sir which paper would be best for the beginners?
@willkempartschool6 жыл бұрын
Hi Eram, it depends on the effect you're trying to achieve and if you're working with watery washes. A NOT (which stands for Not Hot pressed) is a medium texture watercolour paper that can work well. Cheers, Will

I need to ask... must you varnish a finished painting? I'm terrified to do it!
@willkempartschool7 жыл бұрын
Hi Joyce, no, you don't have to varnish a painting, but it will protect the surface and even the sheen. Will
@lorigoldberg66588 жыл бұрын
why would you use gloss and not mat in your painting? especially if you are working with a natural subject matter. Does it not look to plastic which is what acrylic is? Do you have a recommondation in how to keep the colors rich and have depth by using a medium but not glossy.
@willkempartschool8 жыл бұрын
Hi Lori, gloss medium gives you a cleaner glaze and then you can alter the sheen in the final varnish. A satin will add a richness without being as shiny as gloss. Cheers, Will
@lorigoldberg66588 жыл бұрын
that is a good answer. Do you varnish all of your paintings and if you do what method do you use? Brush? and if so what is the brand so there is no brush marks or do you spray? I send my students to your youtube demos. excellent. thanks
@willkempartschool8 жыл бұрын
Hi Lori, I apply an isolation coat to separate the paint layer from the varnish layer and then apply a MSA varnish, either using a soft brush or a spray varnish. If you scroll down to the heading 'Varnish & Isolation Coat' You can read more about varnish here: willkempartschool.com/acrylic-painting/ Thanks for the recommendations to your students! Cheers, Will

do you gesso the canvas first?
@willkempartschool7 жыл бұрын
If a canvas is white is already has a coat of gesso on, so for this painting, I just painted the tonal ground onto an existing white canvas. Cheers, Will
