My dad was a very successful car dealer. After 10 years he sold the buisiness. I asked him why and he replied, " I couldn't stand the loafers" The guitar world is plagued by the same vermin. They can barely play, but they can talk, talk, talk. It is a bizarre industry. Only about 5% of the total guitars I have sold or repaired went to a person who could actually play. 95% went to a person who couldn't even strum a 3 chord song without flipping the beat around or getting lost if they didn't literally have lyrics with little chord symbols printed in front of them. It is a world of Stevie Wonders, talking about their newest telescope. I am retired. My advice just recognize your customers most likely can't play a lick.

The guitar industry is odd. If I sell X-ray machines then I know my customers most likely can OPERATE an X-ray machine. If I sell a guitar, I know that most likely the guy who buys it couldn't even strum Happy Birthday in C# even if I told him it was a I, V, I, IV progression. I had brain cancer in 2008. Last year I was telling a relatively new therapist that I taught guitar. A few weeks later she was asking about my fine motor skills & if I'm knowledgeable enough to change my guitar strings. I told her I can take apart a guitar with problems & fix it, other than soldering the the electronics. Then I thought about it for a while. Nobody showed me how to do anything on guitar when I started playing in 2001. I started watching youtube videos in 2018 on how to fix things on a guitar. I was shocked to hear that there are people who take their guitar into a store & pay to have the strings changed??!! I make a point of showing anyone with, an electric guitar, how to do stuff. Acoustic guitars I find to be a much different beast.

I grew up working in music stores doing guitar repair. Intelligent people are VERY rare. ( About 1 in 20) Folks forget that out of 20 kids in first grade only one or two will be bright. This is EXACTLY why a retailer has a markup. Folks will WASTE your time and you must charge them for that. When a guitar costs a retailer 500$ and he sells it for 800$, that 300$ is compensation for the 20 times that picker came in, played guitars, wasted my time and bought nuthin'. Welcome to retail.

I have received 105 requests for the same build but I fear my skills are not up to it yet. This would be a great opportunity for you sir. They have all asked for a four neck behemoth with a 12 string neck with 3-single coil pups, a 6 string neck with four humidifiers, a 5 string nylon with a peizo and a 18 string neck of 5 frets with 1 lipstick pup. They all believe the price can be kept low with a Balham wood body to between $1,000 -$1,500. I think this would be a good move for you.

It's harder to re-fret than it is to put the frets on a fresh fingerboard. Plus you're asking someone that lives in the US to do it. They aren't going to work for $5 an hour. Guitarists are idiots......its really simple to say, This is the reason I took the hard road, I learned with a Bigsby and a Floyd, I learned how to maintain and how to deal with more complex systems, and more f&*king importantly I learned how the damn instrument works, and the physics behind how it works. I also started looking at guitars thinking its a blank canvas hanging on the shop wall, what can I do to make it mine, so it ended up modding, and doing it myself, then it ended up I want this but no one makes this, so I just started building them myself and started simple and worked my way up to the more complex stuff learning along the way, When I ran into some road blocks some of you guys on youtube helped alot, thank you for that. I ordered a Jaguar from Sweetwater a few months back, its not the expensive one, its a Vintera II, I had them swap the nut out for a black tusq to match the look, and all I asked them to do was put a set of 10's(I usually go Labell 11s but) they were asking for specifics on the setup, and I said to them just give me medium action and keep the setup neutral, there is a reason for that, Offset bodies with that bridge type will never endingly need to be tweaked, you have to shim the neck 1 degree, raise the bridge and increase the break angle and all kinds of junk to really make it easily playable without rattling and such, but its one of those things you have to kind of do yourself to get it right because there are only so many techs that probably know and there is zero point in burdening them or giving them a complex task like that where experience is needed.

Sorry, im that guy, im guilty. I learned that developing a new idea will be more expensive. It's new territory. I wanted bass guitar strings mixed, 2.bass/4.regular, and percussion. I bought a cheap guitar and did the modifications myself. There is developing a concept and custom work that are different from each other.

I want a guitar where I can swap the wings while playing. That's okay, I understand if you're not capable of such a challenge, I'm already halfway through building two. (which will 'become one' and then one again)... Gotta love how 'modern' tech can make ancient techniques pretend to be new.

Players have to learn to adjust. I have one telecaster in a sea of superstrats at home. The action is set higher than my usual 1mm because it just can't get any lower. I just keep this in mind when I play it instead of bitch and moan.

Just build what you want. Be an artist and don't make custom guitars for people would be the solution to this nightmare. Doing custom work is not fun and only stressful....

Pikilloification If you're building guitars that you like and other people don't like them, you're probably in the wrong business. Les Paul didn't ask 10,000 people how to build his guitar before he started. He just started building it and then waited for them to figure out how good it was.

This is why i never went into repairing and taking care of guitars as I could have cause I had me an name as being good at it by an artist and that it spreed, ok that is an good starter but no. I would had ended up as shit poor as customers will come and tell me my job and that it is an easy fix! Very comon in almost all jobs that some customers knows it all....EASY PEACY ok why in hell did he not sort it out by himself then? Cause we are talking money...the customer declares it to be an itsy bitsy small thing..a small thing can not cost that much.. he is thinking about a couple of bucks or hopefully as made for free. Them big ones with an well grounded reputation will show such an person to the door I worked in such an company them bums came in yak yak yak me say this and that...the owner raised his head WHAT? Nailed his eyes and pointed at the door, get! What an pleasure and steady money.

@@oriontackett7643 I get what you are saying. Building is a combination or art and engineering. He should know what his time and skill is worth before he talks to customers in order to give them a starting point. What he is not conveying in the video is that people will option a builder to the point of frustration. How much for stainless? How much for Neck-Thru? etc. If you have to spend 10 hours talking with the customer to acquire a build agreement, your books are already in the red.

Those 3 can actually EARN a living with their guitars. Very, very, very few guitar buyers can play guitar. If I asked most guitar buyers to simply strum Happy Birthday in C# and even told rm it was a I, V,I,IV progression, they would fail.
