The NBA Media’s Hate of International Players…
This Video:
Joel Embiid, Luka Doncic. Nikola Jokic, and Giannis Antetokounmpo are all international NBA players. Two of them have won back to back MVP awards, but all these players catch constant disrespect from the NBA media despite making up the NBA's top 7 players currently. From Colin Cowherd disrespecting Embiid, to Luka pre draft takes by Max Kellerman, Stephen A Smith, and Skip Bayless that were just awful, to the hateful comments by Nick Wright to Jokic, and of course the Giannis disrespect saying he can't be the face of the league because he isn't American! This is xenophobia in the NBA media that has to stop (because Victor Wembenyama is on his way!)

About Me:
I am a 19 year old basketball fanatic who enjoys creating KZbin videos. I've been watching the NBA for a decade now, as I first became a huge fan of Derrick Rose and the Chicago Bulls. I also have become a big fan of Kevin Durant, Giannis Antetokounmpo, Trae Young, along with many other great NBA players. You can expect one high quality video every single week on this channel to be uploaded on Friday at 7:00 PM EST, keep on hooping!

Jokic to me is especially disrespected. Just because he’s not super “athletic” does not mean he isn’t the best player in basketball. Idiots say his team not doing well is his failure, ignoring his complete lack of hep last year. No player ever has been able to do what Jokic does. He’s probably the most complete offensive player of all time. And defensively he is well above average, far from the liability people pretend he is.

Xenophobia is a big problem, but I think a big part of the disrespect Doncic and Jokic get is their body type. People have a bias to think of athletes as fast, muscular, etc., so when something doesn't conform to that bias, they refuse to believe it. A lot of people have trouble accepting examples when skill > athleticism.

Not that I want to defend these xenophobic morons, but talking about athleticism... Giannis is the superstar that executives dream about. He's great on court, represents working class values, excellent work ethic, team oriented, has good interactions with fans off court, comes off as genuine and likeable. There's seemingly so much positive stuff going on with Giannis, you'd be mad to not want him as the face of the NBA. Any organization would love to have representation like that. the thing about foreign players is that they're always so loyal to their teams that invest in them no drama. no headlines, they just go out and play basketball. most of these guys come from less than fortunate backgrounds. they are truly humble and worked very hard for what they get. the media wants headlines, they want to create controversy and drama

Giannis and Jokic are two European players who came from humble beginnings, now flashy mixtapes, no media hype, and most importantly they were not part of the American system (college etc). They rose due to hard work and ethic, and the American media cannot forgive them that. They have also stayed humble and do not embrace the ''American culture'', are not buddy buddies with other players and they talk through their games, so they generate little to no media attention. As for Doncic, he is again not a part of their system and they wanted him to fail, in order to prove that European basketball is weak. In the case of Jokic and Doncic there is also some racism involved as we talk about two relatively unathletic white dudes who have taken the league by storm. This is why the media try to also push the narrative of the next American superstar (zion for example). Cause they cant stand that the best players right now are European and not part of their machine

I always laugh at the "athleticism" thing. To me it just means you can jump a bit higher, maybe you're a bit faster. Athleticism doesn't cover footwork, strength, stamina, and both Jokić and Luka got those in spades. Both are the strongest physically at their respective positions, they can play for a long freaking time(Jokić even broke some record in that regard while he was still fat), both of their footwork is great, plus they are smarter than any other player in the entire league. Jokić can run the game on brains alone and he does sometimes, and he's unstoppable while doing it. They are way, way more tactically and fundamentally sound than 99.9 percent of players in the NBA and they are the living proof you don't need to jump high to play basketball. All you need is a brain.

The Luka comments were straight up idiotic. I remember me and my friends laughing are asses off when he didn't go first overall. It was surreal, they were literally comparing Doncic, a Euroleague champion and MVP at 19, and Eurobasket champion at 18 years old, with role players, and not much of role players at that, like Bender or Hezonja (I am Croatian and have no problem saying they are trash)... What Luka accomplished in his European career will not be done again. The kid is a prodigy, you had to be stupid and blind not to see it... it is uncanny. The thing is, the Kings hade Vlade effing Divac in their ranks. And there were stories on why they didn't draft Doncic, not to get into that... but at the end of the day, just for that one thing, the fact that Divac didn't insist on drafting Doncic, he should never be allowed to get within 500 meters of an NBA franchise meeting ever again... I can forgive Americans, their European scouting is god awful, they don't understand or care to understand European basketball and consequently it is always a roullete with European prospects... but Divac, Divac should've known, he must've known... he is either stupid and incompetent or malevolent, possibly both. In any case, he hurt his franchise severely in that draft...

The nba media hates international players because they’re not used to players just putting their head down, mastering the intricacies of basketball, playing god-tier level basketball and not making a big deal about it. To them, you gotta be on the highlight reel, have a massive social media presence, and care about what they have to say about your game. Instead of celebrating dudes like jokic, Giannis, luka and embiid for the uniqueness of their games and how good they are, the media (save for Zach Lowe, he’s a real one) discredits each of them because they don’t pop off and talk shit after every made basket and make a big deal about it on social media. Lastly, jokic deserves way more respect then he’s currently getting. Dude is basically what sabonis would’ve been if the USSR didn’t fuck his knees up and allowed him to play when he was in his early 20s. Jokic is the best passing big man, ever, and something like that should be celebrated instead of being met with derision and nonchalance. Fuck the nba media.

NBA has long underappreciated the type of game that is more prevalent outside- more tactical knowhow, more passing, more shooting (until Steph), less flashy dunks. Fact is in the NBA the game is set up so that the stars get more shots regardless of their actual percentages and newbies are not allowed to shoot even if open. In Europe that would not work, and that makes young talented players there learn to play clutch game. And players from the balcans learn to be hard as titanium regardless of how they may look.

The irony is, if Luka, Nikola or Giannis came through the NCAA path way, these same people would be a LOT vocal in their criticism - and just look at the garbage that gets selected in the Lottery from NCAA schools - J Okafor, H.Thabeet, O. Toppin etc. The NBA, like the NFL, is very insular - unlike the MLB and NHL which have much larger foreign player percentages, and have been this way for a long time (relatively). Hence the tendency towards xenophobia. There's also a small amount of 'reverse' racism in the assessment of white European players especially - despite the success of Dirk and others like Peja Stojakovic.

Weirdest thing he's gonna play for French national team at EuroBasket, because people from all countries who were European colonies have automatic right to citizenship from country that colonized their country in the past. Cameroon was French colony in the past. The same way Ibaka played for Spain. So technically Joel is more European than American. Lauri Markkanen also came to USA right after highschool, as 19 years old kid in 2016 and played college basketball, very similar like Joel, nobody considers him American. Only foreign players that are considered as "Americans"were Rik Smits and Detlef Schremph, since they played full college years and were mostly products of American basketball. Joel could drop into that category, but mostly why Media tries to hype him because NBA is trying desperately to expand at African market and they think having African player as one of the faces of the league would help in that, similar like they did with Yao Ming and China. What they don't get Africa is actually continent with 55 different countries and languages, people from Tunis, Algeria, Egypt, Uganda, Morocco etc etc don't care about some Cameroon's basketball player. Basketball isn't football where people from whole Africa care about some football Superstar from Africa, like they were care for George Weah, Didier Drogba or Samuel Eto'o. That's why even Joel decided to play for France, because that's his biggest chance to participate at Olympics. And since France become Africa 2.0 in all sports (here in Europe we make fun about them all the time), that won't be problem for French basketball Association.

Was waiting for someone to finally call this out, great video. I think the main reason there is hate on foreign players is because the nba has for the last 30 years promoted the sport to intertwine with hip hop culture and these foreigners don’t represent that. This is why Dirk never got the respect he truly deserved. A lot of writers and fans are upset so many foreign (White) players are changing the NBA landscape and it’s no longer the street ball game it was 15 years ago. I’ve also heard people complain about there being a lot more players coming in who are half black/white and if you look at the mothers who are white, they are usually former college athletes. I have a theory about this but might come off as racist since it’s a reverse Jimmy the Greek theory.

Think of this scenario would we all remember Hakeem if he never went to College in the US and instead made his name in the foreign leagues? Well I'm french... And while I don't want to comment the Gobert-Mitchell-Shaq-US Media situation, or the fact Tony Parker was put out of the 75 best players list, I'd say the first problem with US Media is their laziness. The opening of the NBA is like the discovery of America : they have to widen their horizon in a way that needs to drastically change their perspective on the entire world. It means for example to learn to follow Euroleague to understand new prospects, 17 year old kids, and not just look at some games from Auburn / NC / Duke / Kansas etc to understand the draft...

The funny thing is NBA is trying to become a more global and international brand but how are you going to achieve that when you’re trying to downplay some of your best international talents that stepped foot on their basketball courts. That’s just straight up disrespectful.

The East Coast media in particular rly don't seem to fw Jokic its weird bro like basically all of Fox Sports and most of ESPN outside of Zach Lowe and Jalen & Jacoby don't look as Jokic nearly as highly as the consensus; if I had to guess, main reasons being that they prob watch 2-3 Nuggets games max per year outside of the playoffs, don't find him marketable given how low-maintenance he is and that he doesn't have any social media, and conflate his lack of athleticism with him not being as dominant as someone like a LeBron or KD and that he thus must not be as good as those players, even tho anyone who actually watches Joker knows that he regularly dominates, just more with skill, playing at his own pace, and his elite basketball IQ as opposed to strength and athleticism

I think the talking heads and especially the former player talking heads are the most biased and borderline xenophobic against the international players. The rest of the media who actually vote for the awards and write articles about the league seem to pretty much have it right. That's why all those international players got those awards after all.

Also it's false that people didn't consider winning record for jokic MVP This is not a Westbrook 2017 situation It's not only historical numbers regular season record also supports jokic argument If anything ja Morant team winning record isn't helping him the grizzlies win more without him Nuggets had a worse seeding but nearly identical regular season record to the 76ers and a little worse than the bucks but obviously Giannis had khris and jrue available for much more time than jokic had KPJ and DM which was literally 0 like they didn't show up Nuggets regular was worse than 76ers and bucks But nuggets regular season record was still amazing and very much comparable to all the other MVP contenders

I am gonna be fair to Nick Wright, he is usually arguing for Giannis or Embid over Jokic. (althought that CP3 take was crazy) So i don't think Wright has any actual bias against international players, and Giannis , Nick has been defending consistently before he even won a championship. He just doesn't think of Jokic as a back 2 back MVP (i honestly though Giannis deserved it this past year more than Jokic but i was cool with Jokic winning it as well)

Top 5 players last season for me: Giannis Jokic embid luka steph… KD was a first round sweep bron put up good stats on a bad team didn’t lead to winning (not like Jokic) and JT, demar ja and the suns 2 top players were all 100% ranked under these guys imo.
