5:02 the funny thing is in the book Dahl made it sound like Charlie's family was starving and I got a few questions about that. a) how the heck has a teacher not noticed how sickly Charlie looks and if he is truly starving he would've been falling asleep in class and struggling with academics which again the teacher should've noticed. b) with the teacher noticing how the heck are social services not being called? Yes Charlie is not in any danger since his parents and grandparents aren't abusive towards him but as a former foster child I can confirm if a family is struggling to put food on the table CAS (CPS in the states) would in fact get involved and help the family with food stamps/food bank cause not providing food for any reason is considered child neglect. I know CATCF is British I believe so not sure about them but I know from a Canadian standpoint his family would be investigated. c) if Charlie is as weak as the book says how the heck is he able to walk? the book mentions how he is sickly due to the lack of food and leaky roof he sleeps under so how the heck is he walking around never mind being able to walk around a huge factory like Willy Wonka's.

Yeah Dahl definitely romanticized what it is like to be starving. Granted it's a kids book so I guess it isn't surprising he didn't have a true portrayal of it.

@@WhytheBookWins fair enough. If I truly had to guess I would guess that Dahl wanted to do a realistic depiction (he honestly doesnt strike me as a man to "romanticise things" but because of the fact that it was meant as a kids book the publishers said no and Dahl realising he wouldnt win that fight changed it. its ironic that Dahl is known as a children's author but seems to really not like kids himself. Kind of reminds me of Eric Walters who allegedly doesnt like kids/YAs but because that's his genre he puts up with it. Personally I would like a sequel cause the book is really good. Maybe in a few years once Dahl's death isnt so fresh. Im someone who believes that a) u shouldnt do movies based on books after the author recently died ( would say wait at least a decade) when u know the author would disapprove. or b) the owners of Dahl's estate (presumably his kids/ex-wife) give permission or if the owners of the estate arent his family then only if his family is okay/indifferent.

26:52 There is very little CG in the 2005 version. Everything in the Chocolate Room was real, even the giant waterfall. Practical was used everywhere as much as possible, with the exception of very few impossible-to-shoot scenes.

The glass elevator scene with all the fireworks really took me out. I thought the CGI looked particularly bad in that scene. But overall, you are right. There wasn't a lot of CGI from what I remember of it.

I personally prefer the 2005 movie. While the 1971 movie has its charm, I just really like how faithful the 2005 movie is to the book. The 1971 film also had a lot of scummy behavior from the execs and producers towards Roald Dahl, which really sours my taste for it. The 2005 film was closely and lovingly worked on by Dahl’s widow and daughter to make sure that the film would have been one that Dahl was proud of if he had been alive to see it.

Great work. It's Gene. Gene makes the 1971 movie magic to me. It was always Gene. Pure Imagination with the menace and the magic of the character still holds up. I loved Roald Dahl as a kid but as an adult the twists of his personal failings stick out in his writing. Still love Matilda and I think my daughter liked it too. Great work, great video.

ALthough I do wonder with the sucess of the first movie why they never adapted the second one? I know Dahl was unhappy with the 1971 verision so maybe he banned plans of making a sequel? I know the other adapation of his book the witches which was released in 1991 (the OG not the recent remake) he wasnt happy with either because of the "too happy ending" where the boy is turned back into a human while in the book he remains a mouse (and sadly presumably dies about a decade later since Mice don't live that long but as a former human he may live longer than a regular mouse which is addressed in both book and the newer adaptation)

Mike gets like shrunk and stuff and then stretched, which seems painful but at the same time violet is literally like blown up and then “JUICED”!?? Which sounds like extremely dubious and painful. Would you rather be shrunk and then stretched or inflate to like 10 feet and then be juiced?

@manman6122 I hadn't considered the juicing... but being stretched also sounds very painful. I think I would still say Mike had it the worst all in all. But violet would be number two. Augustus would be painful too, being squeezed through a pipe so he would be third. Then lastly Veruca.

Dahl's message wasn't gum chewing, snacking, watching television and giving your child what they want are bad. Wonka's factory is closely associated with every one of these activities in one form or another. Dahl's message was these activities are okay once in a while just don't allow these things to define you, don't over do it.The child characters are examples of what happens if you allow these activities take over your life. A balanced view in every aspect of life is sound advice we all need to hear now and then. We have both movies in our library and my wife Michele adores that song Imagination as well, she sings it quite a bit. Look forward to your next project.

A few things from the book, the toothpaste factory actually closed. The 2005 movie had a better explanation for Charlie's dad being fired. Also, Charlie only buys two bars in the shop. You might be misreading it, but the lines about another and another are in reference to his bites. He buys a second one and finds the ticket. The money would be very valuable to his family, so he plans on buying one bar and saving the rest. He gets tempted to buy a second one because, at this point, his family is all starving.

Great review!! So many interesting aspects that I had never considered! I loved the book and the Gene Wilder movie and I am not sure I could choose between them. It would probably be a tie for me. The 1971 has the music which I love so much and the Charlie Bucket's character so much more heartfelt. Also I agree Gene Wilder is now so iconic to the role, although Johnny Depp definitely makes his mark too on other roles he has played, and probably would have had Wilder not come first! Great video! So, the chocolate room and some other parts of the Tim Burton movie weren't all CGI heavy. These were real practical effects and production design done by hand in an actual set. There's a little bit of CGI in the movie which isn't very distracting. Much of the sets and production design were real. Even Burton used real trained rescue squirrels to portray Wonka's squirrels making the nuts. Some were computer generated but most were real squirrels. Burton is already a visionary and these days he's a little effy about CGI in his movies now he's finished directing Beetlejuice Beetlejuice and only used stop-motion animation. So his adaptation isn't CGI heavy and didn't distract from the visual storytelling the movie was going for.

Did you know Roald Dahl hated the 70s one Laura? Mainly because he didn’t like Gene Wilder. Also Quaker Oats who funded the movie was originally going to make and sell a real Wonka Bar. However, there was a problem in the formula which caused the bars to melt on shelves so they were withdrawn. While the remake is more faithful to the book, I think Depp is very miscasted as Wonka.

I was 11 years old when the 71 movie came out. I never saw it, but some of the kids had a derogatory term then..."Aw, you're just a Willy Wonka!" or to our friends who were girls, we'd say "You're just like Veruca Salt!"😂...Years later there was a cool alternative rock band (all young women) called Veruca Salt, just being ironic reference.... I loved Gene Wilder later in mid-70s movies like Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstei and a later serious detective series on tv he did ("Radio Days" or similar title) set in the 1940s at a radio broadcasting station Worth checking out if you can find it. A lovely period piece. You make me want to finally watch the 1971 movie, you break it down so well. Maybe not the "Johnny Depp" version...I tried to watch the "Alice" movie and it was too freaky with the overkill CGI, just like I love Helena Bonham Carter in other movies, but not in that same movie with her in it . It's true. Sometimes CGI-overkill overwhelms the Story and the Acting...

@@WhytheBookWinsSorry to "carpet-bomb" comments, but this situation reminds me of a novel I found in a used book store long ago called "Landdark" (?) by a Scottish writer Alasdair Grey. A fantastical book where the protagonist awoke with each chapter to find himself in a different reality but a similar eternal Lady Love under a different guise, and it really impressed me at the time. Have to try to find it again! Some novels I have re-found in this "Age of Amazon" were an interesting journey back then , some different opinions upon re-reading, but some takes hold on and some are so consistent. Like re-reading "Frankenstein" and "Dracula" novels I hadn't read since I was a teenager, my reaction was "how stupid the movie versions were, compared to the original novels, how superficial! Frankenstein's creation could speak and express it's own horrible, tortured Existence" ...Sorry, I just got director/actor Kenneth Branagh's version of "Mary Shelley's 'Frankenstein' cd today, haven't seen in years but I remember it followed Mary Shelley's book pretty close in the doomed narrative. I'm excited to re-watch.

@@WhytheBookWins I feel like the actor that gave the closest performance to book Wonka was Douglas Hodge (in the original West End production of the musical). He even recorded unabridged audiobooks of the book and its sequel, The Great Glass Elevator. Even the costume they used for that production was extremely faithful to the descriptions and illustrations by Quentin Blake, down to the black goatee and green trousers.
