I am generation x. That means that I grew up with something in the first cable offering of channels called "z channel." It was through this channel that showed things from popular movies to art house classics that I saw what is now one of the most endearing children's films out there. So for obvious reasons as well as the brilliance of the actor, I prefer Gene Wilder, but still respect the great works of the other two bringing Willy Wonka to their generation of children.

I was 14 when the Gene Wilder version came out. My elder brother saw it & remarked how cool it was. I never saw the Johnny Depp version of Wonka. I'm in my mid 60's now, and finally saw the Wilder version for the first time in Nov. 2023. This latest version with Timothy Chalamet resonates well with me due to its nuances, kudos, and references to the Wilder version, finding it to be just as whimsically delightful as well. This newest installment of Wonka with Chalamet and Hugh Grant is worth seeing again!

I'm old enough to have seen Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory in theaters when I was 12 years old. I like Gene Wilder's Willy Wonka much better than Johnny Depp's. But I have to say that Timothée Chalamet was wonderful in "Wonka." I didn't go to the movie with high expectations, after the disappointment of "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" but I really enjoyed it!
@eeickhoff48169 ай бұрын
I agree! I always loved Gene Wilder's performance, and yet Timothee Chalamet captured that raw excitement and even brought a much-needed tenderness to the role without being too weird. To me, Wilder will always be Wonka, but I see Wilder's character in the much younger version of Chalamet and understand him better. i.e., His relationship with his mother. It makes for a poignant moment when he sings the famous "Imagination" song. It's tugging at my memories of Wilder. :)

I was introduced to the original movie very young at daycare probably around 3 or 4 years-old. I loved it. We'd watch it every year. I then came across the books and read them, even though I hated reading at the time. I loved the first one, the second left something to be desired but was still okay. Then I watched Burton's version...wow was that terrible. It didn't embody any of the book or the original movie IMO. It was just weird. I really disagree with anybody who thinks the Burton version is true to the book. I'll watch this new one, but I'm nervous about it. The Wilder version had such a great cast, even the kids were perfect. I just don't see the cast being matched from the previews, but we'll see. I do like that it's a prequel. At some point someone has to make the sequel.

To be fair, a lot of the narrative as they mentioned in the KZbin involving the India Palace as well as the oompa loompa singing that was taking from the books, lyrics were authentic. Seeing how I worked at the St Louis Wonka branch for 12 years, there was never a mention of Quaker Oats involvement. Only that Gene Wilder walked through the factory dressed up as Willie when the movie first released. The company then was called Sunmark Inc. The then new Wonka Factory was actually in Chicago. Nestles bought the company back in 1990. In the years that followed, all of Sunmark was closed down and its candies were spread throughout other different Nestles factories. Ill never forgive Nestles for the damage their management did to the best job Ive ever had.

Wonka is currently in a weird place for me where i actually love each rendition as each have 10x more positives than negatives. Rare to see that in a franchise. Wilder brought the man to life. While chalomet may seem too earnest to become that, a few decades around grant might guide him there. Burton's accuracy to the source material and Depp's insane performance as a man layered in solitude isnt something to discard. Also, one man show from Roy. Man put in WORK. In my mind willy wonka is a kid of a dentist and a nomad, who either grew up with one or the other. One leads to depp the other to wilder. Either way chocolate is the endgame
@pauljosephmigliore88039 ай бұрын
I did see Depp's take on willy Wonka, However because of the original movie the line that talks about today's society the famous line is " you lose you get nothing good day sir." from gene wilder's willy Wonka makes it more meaningful and explains the world we all live in. And that makes it very important for so many people that in my eyes Gene Wilder performance is more inspiring to me more than any other remake because it cares about just turning a profit and disobeying the level of respect to the original actor of the same character. And that is disgraceful at the highest level in the favorability of the other actress and actors that made the original great for me when I was a kid myself.

I wanted to watch it, seeing how that Bugs Bunny was on the cover, but he only showed up in the opening logo. However, I adored the movie, nonetheless, as I was in awe at 2 things - the scene where Violet turns into a blueberry (not to mention giving birth to my inflation fetish), and Gene Wilder's performance as Willy Wonka. I've only seen the new version once, and felt like I was watching a new version of Annie. It was too much of a musical. Even though, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory had quite a few songs in it, it didn't come off as a musical, but more as a fantasy film.

To me I loved Chalomain and Depp but Wilder will always be the best Wonka, I enjoyed the more musical take on the new Wonka, but honestly as good as Grant's acting was i could not take his character with any real seriousness its to ridiculous and i wonder why they did not cast a Little person as it would look less jarring. So for me if I am rating them based on enjoyment of the story I would say 1971 Wilder version is my favorite followed by Wonka and then The Depp version, I enjoyed Johnny's version of Wonka but the story for that version to me was not quite as flushed out as the 1971 version, maybe its because i grew up on the 1971 version but I did enjoy all three movies.

I like all except for the Johnny Depp version. I thought Depp’s version was downright creepy and that it followed the book WAY too closely. The Gene Wilder while still true to the book acted as its own thing. A movie adaptation of a book does not need to be exactly like the book. Both use different formats and there’s a reason for that. Also, you don’t need to have a bunch of special effects and cgi to make a good movie although they do look really cool. You just need to have a good story with good writing, good acting, and good production value. That’s why I prefer the original 1971 version with Gene Wilder as Willy Wonka. Besides, it had a much better soundtrack than the 2005 version with Johnny Depp although the songs sung by the oompa loompas were alright and it would be kinda fun to see a rerelease both movies with the soundtracks swapped just for fun and there are some clips from both versions on here where the soundtracks were swapped like the songs sung by the oompa loompas for example where the scenes from the 1971 version have the 2005 songs and the same scenes from the 2005 version have the 1971 songs. As for Wonka with Timothy Chalamet, that movie works perfectly as a prequel to the original movie and I only recognise the 1971 movie and the 2023 movie while completely disregarding the 2005 version and I like to pretend that the latter doesn’t exist

Derbyshire = DAHR - bih - shirr Staffordshire = STAA - ferd - shirr I think Gene Wilder is my favorite, Johnny Depp was saddled with a totally unnecessary backstory (as much as I love Christopher Lee), and it just didn't work, but I blame the director for that. Gene Wilder was the first. I thought it was fun and colorful and was a fan of Gene Wilder. Never read the book, but was given to believe this was it. As a fan of Johnny Depp, I gave it a shot. I never expected it to be exactly like the first. It wasn't. And I catch on to each person Depp is copying in an movie and Wilder was not it. So, I loved the movie for what it was, dark and colorful. Haven't see Wonka yet but am looking forward to it. Also, it is not the book or the two movies. This is a completely different movie and should not be put in the same category. It is sad and colorful. I followed a review in which the reviewer sad that the main problem was when they tried to make Timothee do jokes in Wilder's style. He is not Wilder. And the ending tells you what lead to the other movies and why Wonka eventually had to escape. Oh, and this movie is made by the Padding Bear people and has a similar vibe.
