Slugworth bribed each of the winners to steal an everlasting gobstopper for him so he can figure out the recipe. Charlie was the only kid to pass the test since he had what the other kids didn't: a moral compass.

Yeah. It's why, as great as this film was and as deserving of its "Classic" status as it is, I personally slightly prefer the 2005 version. In this version, the only kid who really came across as a bad person was Veruca (Violet and Mike were mildly annoying at worst, and even though Augustus ate way too much, he came across as a friendly and well- mannered boy). In the 2005 version, in contrast, all four of them came across as really repulsive and easy to hate, as they were in the book and indeed as they should be.

WW Kids Reality Show actually Veruca is worse in this than the '05 one cuz this one kept talking non stop and pressuring tf out of her father and violet was much more of a snob in this one cuz she brings down her bestfriend who she beat the world record and talks back to get mother unlike the '05 version where veruca hardly talks in her part and violet doesn't show off about her friend she beat and doesn't talk back to her mom

I personally think that both movies are charming and enjoyable in their own way. Sure, the personalities of the other ticket winners are different in both movies, but the 1971 movie still had some subtle hints that made the other winners seem unlikable (with the exception of Veruca, anyway), while the 2005 movie amplified their bad qualities for a more modern setting and audience.

How did Slugworth know to be at where the winners were anyway? He'd only know about the winners by the press, and he wouldn't be able to reach them at the same time as the press. Even for Veruca and Charlie, who had no press, he managed to find them practically instantly. I also did like how the TV camera found it interesting to film Slugworth secretly talking to Violet, even though they obviously didn't find out what he was saying to her.

In this version, I thought Augustus and Mike were nice enough boys but were too obsessed (eating and TV) and they simply didn't follow Wonka's rules. In the 2005 version though, all of them were insufferable and Charlie was made too much like a Mary Sue.
