The reason I love this game is that YOU decide what improvement is. It can be rank, accuracy, passes, weird skillsets, or just dedication - Anything you want can be "improvement" if you look at it that way. I am proud of a decent chunk of my top plays, but infinitely more proud of many plays not on there. My personal metric is "Would this, or future improvements of this, look cool AF if I showed it to a friend, or someone else that plays the game". Find your groove, and pls enjoy game

Tbh i always wish there was another way to reward plays in this game bc i feel like a lot of people just fall into the trap that the PP system is the only metric of how good they are only to be bummed out(sometimes depressed???) just cause they aren't going up in rank, even tho the game is ultimately a solo player game
@WillyOsu5 ай бұрын
Luckily peppy has seemed open to adding "dedication points" or something to reward players for the more prolific their play repertoire, so look forward to that in the future!

Another problem with farm map is that pretty much everyone is farming like you said and the ones that don't want to farm the same map over and over again to gain pp is quickly considered a deranker because "you are too good for your rank" when in reality they are just playing the game and having fun
@a-o-s5 ай бұрын
If someone asks "am I good for my rank?" first we need to ask what exactly they're looking to be "good" at. If its how well they have demonstrated they can perform in exactly the way that the pp system rewards, then their rank is exactly how good they are. but as you said, tldr the pp system is bummy. I and most of the community think that it's a metric that is simply inaccurate at accessing what people would naturally consider "good".

I like osu!Skills, it tracks your plays by 7 categories: Stamina, Tenacity, Agility, Accuracy, Precision, Reaction, Memory. It gives scores points based on how much it fits in these categories. i like it because i can see really quickly on what i have to improve. Ofc it isn't perfect but it's better than just focusing on your rank imo.

At the end of the day skill Is skill. So just look at that, and for people that derank (I've always thought this) playing against someone that is worse than you in almost every way just so you can win is an L mentality. If you want to be competitive then play against people that will actually be competition and help you improve and not demotivate other players from going in the tourney scene. There is a lot more I would like to say about that but I'll just leave it be.

When people ask if they’re good for their rank, I think what they mean to say is “am I capable of doing everything that I should be capable of doing at my rank, or have I farmed easy maps too much/become a one trick?” In that sense I think the question isn’t trivially misguided; there are definitely people that are lower rank than me but who I think are better than me because they’re more well rounded or are capable of playing maps I can’t.

Personally, I think it’s fine to a large extent to buy into the pp system as the main metric to rate your skill. There will always be popular maps and popular skillsets, and a continuous conversation between devs, mappers, and players to help things get better for everyone. That being said, I think after a while, players should explore a bit and personalize their preferences for what metrics they find fulfilling. For many, pp is just a convenient way for players to find improvement and compare themselves to other people (and to reassure themselves that they haven’t peaked yet). Over time, this will evolve into other metrics like recognizing accuracy, misscount, passes, mod combinations, etc. on specific maps, or tourney performance. For me, pp takes on different meanings depending on the context - if I feel like caring about pp, then a 200pp score for me is excellent with EZ, but if I’m playing speed, I’m gunning for 400-500pp scores instead. Pp is just one of the many reasons that supports why I could be proud of a play, but it is nice that there is a number that is designed to meaningfully reflect skillful performance. In the end, pp is just a number, and rank is derived from weighed pp. How someone uses those for comparison is up to them

I stopped really caring about rank a long time ago. I'm still a 6 digit, but I fc 6 star maps, and have a top play of 278pp. The most important thing for me though is having fun with this game, sure pp is cool and all, but I think I'll stick to my 3 min+ nomod maps, those are what I find fun. I post some of my plays in a discord server I'm in, the majority there are 5 digits who have been playing for a good while. I honestly wish I could have seen the look on their faces when I got my fc on Ranbu no Melody (6.38 stars) 97.71% acc. So of course I play some shorter farm maps, because why the heck not, I don't retry spam or anything like that though. I'm honestly super proud of what I have achieved in the past year of playing this game, it's honestly crazy to think about how fast I've improved. So glad I found this game.

I am a person who never really played for rank. I pushed for as high of a rank as I can get once and never farmed since. (59.158 rn and 39.910 3 years ago) "rank in this game is not a measure of skill but a measure of what you have achieved" - thelewa is a quote, but I don't think it's still very accurate. My favorite scores and scores I'm most proud of are passes on classic maps, or really hard maps. For me ranking is a reason to play the game, but not what makes you. Just like passing maps is my reason to play the game. I am good for my rank because I try to push my limit as much as I can and try to get better and learn from my mistakes. I'd personally rather say "rank in this game is a measure of how consistently perfect you are at your main skillset." open for discussion btw

my focus on the ranking system is what has kept me away from maps/skillsets that dont reward much pp, and when i managed to finally get to 5 digit (my primary goal since i started the game) my motivation plummeted and for the last few months have barely touched the game. Now its just a matter of finding maps to play to practice these other skillsets, like i really want to get good at EZ but i always beat myself up about not being able to fc a 3* map not seeing it for how difficult it is for me but how little pp it would give if i did fc it, only looking for higher pp values and star ratings just kept me wanting to only play the farm maps because of the higher numbers attached to them and not how impressive i find them.

Depends, if you only ever touch janky tech maps then yes, your rank is probably accurate for what you do. However if you then go and play some DT jump stream map worth like 2x the pp of what you normally play, then your rank reflects how good you are at DT farming instead of tech. Rank is such a broken system and osu! can try and fix it until the heat death of the universe and probably still won't be close to having it completely balanced.

I agree with parts of the video but i dont think its fair to sit there saying "whoever has farmed more will have more pp" and all that rank means is "who farmed more" cuz that is just completely false. PP is more representative of raw mechanical skill which has it own problems as certain skillsets are neglected. But i still dont see how this has anything to do with how much you farm. Top ranked players aren't top players because they farmed the most but because they worked on the skillsets that is rewarded in the pp system.
@WillyOsu5 ай бұрын
This is fair, but between two people with the same mechanics at that level, the one who has played more maps will always have more pp and a better rank. Im not your avg player given I started osu at 22 not a kid and now im 26 my peak rank was 45k and my top play I did 1st try and quite literally sighed people need to understand ehh.. rank is basically subjective and we are following the subjective view of osu together. Its subjective because it quite literally doesn't matter and as you pointed out and can be "wrong"... or... can it? Something you didn't touch on is the very real possibility that certain individuals will excel in certain tasks than others so maybe someone has a gift and they're better at speed and they will always be better than speed than someone that has theoretical better aim etc etc... Memory is a very easy one to point a stick at because you don't even need to touch the genetic side of this argument some people literally have amazing memory and some people have terrible memory we all agree on that We aremt all the same some of us finding different things harder then each other is what makes us human The people that care about pp so much that farm 99% of the time they play I worry about their mental health because they're running a race that they're almost guaranteed to lose
