Thank you for showing what's to come when having to fit commonly available panels. Also, a great job of showing what tools will be needed and what they are used for. Your tips on what to look out for during the process is priceless!! I am really enjoying this series of videos!!!

Nice work, awesome instructional videos. Thank you for posting. I have an M38A1 restoration underway now, and always come to your videos when I am stuck. Wish I could afford some of the power hammers, but can only work with old hand tools.

Hi Brian, I have been trying to determine if Floating Cage Nuts we're ever used to bolt the front fenders to CJ5 tubs. I swear that was how it was done on my '74, but so far polling the audience only shows the use of the welded on plate nut. Perhaps I just remember the Floating Cage Nuts from other attach points. You are my last hope Obiwan Kenobe.
@metalshaperJeep2 жыл бұрын
Fender to body is done with a threaded plate welded to body. The floating cage nuts that you are thinking about are on the grille and the fender attaches at that point. Bolt goes thru the fender from the underside and into the cage nuts attached to the grille.

@453421abcdefg123456 жыл бұрын
This is really coming along well ! Did you weld in the short tubes that support the top hat at the body bolts, or was that already there ? That was the original function of the wood inserts of course, to prevent collapse of the floor when the bolts are tightened, it just collapses with rust when the water gets in, I find the tube is far better, especially when coated with lots of primer, in UK we have a product called Waxoil, which we spray up into these cavities, that really works well at keeping the rust at bay, you only need to look how good and rust free the metal is around the engine bay to see the effect of oil vapour, the rusty wrecks in the breakers yard are still perfect in the oil soaked areas. Chris B.
@metalshaperJeep6 жыл бұрын
The tubes came on the hat channel from the supplier. Some in the wrong place but I got them finally correct and in the right place. We use a product here called Fluid Film, it is a wool wax and creeps everywhere once you spray it. If you keep up with it you can make a jeep body and chassis last forever.
@453421abcdefg123456 жыл бұрын
Brian: Looking at the Fluid Film video it is the same as our Waxoyl, a Lanolin bases fluid, it is also available in black for road vehicles, where it is less obvious in use, great stuff, I wait until we have 45 C temperatures and coat the whole underside.

Hey Brian, I just started watching your videos. I am working on a 75 CJ5 and it's in rough shape and some parts are hard to get good patterns. Is there someplace to get dimensions for parts like the front and rear floor risers? Thanks
@metalshaperJeep6 жыл бұрын
I always try to pattern from original parts no matter how bad they are . The floor riser should be the same as the earlier CJ5 and I have a pattern and sell that part. Let me know what else you are trying to make and I will check my patterns. Brian

Looking good.....Rub-a-Dub-Dub good man on the tub........ is the weldable primer not so weldable ?.....is that the Eastwood stuff??
@metalshaperJeep6 жыл бұрын
Weldable primer welds a bit harder than plain steel. You have to set you heat hot enough to burn thru and keep dipping nozzle to keep it clean. Any welding problems are worth it to have protection on the inside of the parts.

Do you use flex core or gas ...What do you set your voltage and wire speed at..........
@metalshaperJeep6 жыл бұрын
I don't ever use flux core on sheet metal body panel work. This is .023" solid wire used with 75/25 gas. I am welding this body tub together with my old HTP 140 mig welder. Voltage is just a number from one thru six and wire speed is also a number. For plug welding I am on voltage #5 and wire speed at 8.5. For welding in the floors I am on voltage #4 and wire speed is 8. Hope that helps. Brian
@bartgoins17826 жыл бұрын
Brian, what's the problem with flux core on body panel work? I'm assuming the flux gets between the two panels and creates a place for rust? Again, another great video. Thanks.
@metalshaperJeep6 жыл бұрын
Flux core can be used buy I don't care to be removing flux from the welds all the time. Can also be a problem when plug welding, so I always use solid wire with gas.

Thanks, I appreciate your reply.

There’s guys who swear by that out fit and I’ve been in some real strong conversations arguing the fact. I’m never impressed with their parts.
@metalshaperJeep4 жыл бұрын
Their parts will fit but they don't look anything like the original. I never understand why companies who have the tooling to make accurate parts, don't ever get it right. Best to make your own stuff if you want it to look right and function correctly.
@philbox45666 жыл бұрын
I know your aim is to replicate the original for authenticity but wouldn't it be better to improve on the original given the lessons learned from how the original has failed over the years. Of course then it wouldn't be brought back to original condition. Just thinking out loud that some of the rust problems could be solved with artisanal creativity given that we now have the luxury of hindsight.
@metalshaperJeep6 жыл бұрын
This project is not going to see a hard life when it is done. Garaged and cared for. If you want to see better ways of keeping out rust and body improvements follow along on the snowblower CJ5 project where I am building a custom body that will hold up well when that jeep is out in the snow/sleet/rain. I can't believe how bad the parts are from Classic and they always sign them and write made in the usa on them. I would be embarrassed to put out the parts they sell.
@KRAMPUS19336 жыл бұрын
Brian... YOU would be embarrassed to put your name on it, because YOU have total and very justifiable pride in your work, plus YOU care about the end user - and of course the machine and all the heritage and history that goes with it. Your entire ethos just glows with honesty. You keep the old school European principles alive and with it your American soul and the souls of our ancestors. This is way more than just an exercise in making parts. The people who make those shoddy things are mostly semi literate immigrants brought on board because of the bean counters - not the engineers. Same thing goes for companies like Snap On, who boast "Made In USA" on a lot of their stuff, but conveniently forget to tell you they are made by third world immigrants that have pushed the Americans out of work and onto the breadline. Just keep on banging out this stuff and wake people up to it. If we all show people that they are basically buying the poison that is collectively destroying us, maybe they will think twice and really research it before throwing their money at a system that is choking the life out of us and take up making and repairing rather than using and consuming...
