Willys Jeep CJ5 Body Tub....SGI First CJ5 Tub Review

In this video I am going to show you the very first early Willys CJ5 Body Tub that SGI has produced. I will show you the details that make it good and bad. Either way you will get an honest review of the first CJ5. It is a good body tub and with a few changes things will get better and better.

Looks really good, but more importantly i love this comment, it is great to see a company that listens to its customers and wants to improve. I work on mostly 76-86 CJs do you know if there are any plans for SGI to make something for this era? What is available now is worse than terrible, having a quality product would be fantastic! If tubs are not in the future some high quality parts like A and B pillars and floor pans would be great.

You cj5 tub looks really good. Like that you include some of the early cj5 features (battery box cover and flat spot on the cowl). With the improvements he mentioned I believe you will have one of the best tubs on the market!

What I like about the SGI body is it can be configured to be an early CJ5 (battery box and flat spot on the cowl to mount the mirror). Early CJ5’s used m38a1 tubs but with a tailgate. Could also be a good starting point for those looking to build a replica m38a1c with the recoilless rifle

Great video Brian. Was really excited when I heard SGI was making CJ5 tubs. Unfortunately, they are all early tubs. I've heard there is no estimated ETA for late CJ5 tubs. I totally don't want an MD Juan so my body guy and I are going to attempt to build a tub. I have a tub that is shot and a spare frame templates. We are using some Omix pieces, firewall, cowl and entire front floor. The rest are reproduction pieces from classic enterprises.

Thanks for showing the SGI tub. Overall quality looks great. The body companies should have a MTO option when buying, so you could choose the features that are correct for a particular year/model. I suppose most people just want something that works and don't care about accuracy.

Brian those are nice tubs, but I was hoping I could squeeze in in different questions on a different subject matter buddy. I was also wondering sometime do you have a video somewhere on whether it’s a good idea or bad idea to put lockers on those 44 Dana‘s and if so what kind would you recommend if any, what are the pros and cons if any. Second question on your snowblowing Jeep I know it’s a nice heater box I’m having trouble figuring out where to find those things to get a defroster and basic heating my CJ five doesn’t have anything was taken out of the holes are there that is it any advice that would be greatly appreciated thanks As usual I love your videos

It will depend on what your year model is. The newer they got, the better the defroster got (from factory). Perhaps the service manual shows what you can use for factory options, and go from there.

Not sure yet, shipping costs are out of control and we don't know exactly where pricing will come in on the next shipment. Pete Debella is the distributor so you can call him to get exact pricing.

Would have an interest in a cj5 tub. Do you think they will have options in the future? I’d be interested in a 1971, so would basically delete the gas filler portion and the battery box. What is their lead time?

They are working on a lot of different options and models, it will just take time. they are really getting things going and producing body kits very fast. M38A1 is coming and others.

Did a walk around of my 1965 CJ 5 with your video running in hand. The STI gett's my a thumbs up from what you showed and went over. My doesn't have the removal battery cover, and a big plus. I am headed in the direction on my build to house two batteries Some where behind the passenger seat inside. One to power motor and accessories, other to power a standalone AC unit custom made from a 12vdc motor and fans. Great walk around Bruan, thx for enlighting and bring attention to all 3 bodies, Bear

Great review! I bought a steel MB replacement body from the Philippines in 1979 or 1980. The brand was GenMark, before the MD Juan brand. The fitment of that early tub was TOUGH but she turned out to be good looking from about 3 feet lol! Quality on MD Juan tubs did improve over the years! I have a stainless "Jewels" 3a tub on my 1951 CJ3a. It was built around 1980 also. The quality and fit is beautiful on the "Jewels" tub. The Rivas Company in the Philippines built the stainless tub.

Thanks Steve, I’ve gone through most of these manuals it’s very similar to most of the models that I see that he's been work on. My is a CJ-5 1963 model seems to have basically two square openings there’s a plate over my openings at this point which appear to be factory, so it was probably not a functioning option for whatever reason, but where I live I need defrosters so I’m looking to figure out what’s available it seems like there’s very little information out there for that era of jeep, some of the folks out there might have an idea how to cure my problem.
