Willys Jeep differential rebuild, building axle puller

In this video I will show you how to fabricate a simple puller to remove your axle shafts with ease. I will show it in use and then continue on with the front and rear end rebuild.

I really enjoy learning from your videos thank you. I am starting an fc 150 rebuild so am tooling up. I ordered the connecting coupler and one foot of threaded rod from mcmaster and carr. I was looking thru my metal pile to weld up the puller. I came across some three inch pipe to use for the legs. I drilled a 1.125 hole in some 3/8 x 4 x 4 " that will lay across one end of the pipe with the other end of the pipe up against the axle housing. No need to weld anything.

I get a lot of great ideas for tools I can make to help with these steps. I have always been a little intimidated to get into some of these repairs cause I'm never sure if I have the right equipment to get me through the whole job. Great narration during the entire video all good info, your welding is spot on, I found some U shaped tools among my fathers tools and thought how funny when he has so much moneys into Snap-On tools and thought they were junk and tossed them into the #1 iron pile I guess Ill have to go and retrieve them, Anyway I am working on the 1946 CJ 2A that has set in the yard from 1968 and three generations of kids grow up driving it around the world and I am thinking how funny it would be to see it actually ruining someday ....

i just subbed and i wanted to say THANK YOU very much for the info. i`ve been trying for 2 days to figure out how the axel comes out and cant get it to move, now i know i need a puller and that im not going to break any thing in the differential. angain thank you for the information :)

Just curious but was wondering how do you inspect the axle shafts (straightness, weakness, splines etc). At what point would you replace vs. refurbish? I find that I am now constantly checking for your next video. 👍 Thanks

I check axles for straightness/run out, buy mounting them between centers on the lathe. If it looks like it is running out, I mount a dial indicator and check how bad it is. I always check keyway to make sure the key fits with no slop. Splines are checked visually. If I suspect the axles were abused, I often use a dye penetrating fluid to check for fine cracks. compostwerks1 just got into shop. OTC part number is 7494 for puller kit I used

Made by OTC tool company. Original use is to remove axle bearings, but it makes a great seal puller too. Anybody that sells OTC tools should have it.

I made a device like yours. Exactly the same setup axles and mine's not coming out is there a reason how much torque do I put in window I try something different

Sometimes they can get stuck in there. Just give it a good shock with a hammer and it should work fine.

My axle broke off leaving me about 1 inch of axle to hang on too to pull it out by. I havn't figured out how to pull on it yet.

if you axle is broken but still sticking out, just weld a large nut or washer to it and use a slide hammer or something like that to pull it out.

How do you get the bearing off the axle? I am redoing my Willy’s M38 and cannot figure out how to remove them.

you will need a press to remove and re install bearings. if you don't have a press just take it to a local machine shop or large auto parts store and they should be able to press them off for you.
