It was a basket case when I got the case opened up!!! The grease had literally forced the bottom snap ring off the worm gear retaining the bearings and destroyed the shaft!!! Awaiting new parts will be in on Friday for the whole inside and outside all cleaned up and ready for all new parts to go into the box👍thanks for all your videos please keep um coming I would of never knew where to start or attempt rebuilding the steering gear box otherwise! Thanks Brian 🏆

I have built differentials for more than 20 years including narrowing and turning centers up. I do not have one of those pullers in my Mr Big Tool box nor have ever had a seal that I would use it during a complete rebuild as you portray The Miller tool is a great idea and seems to well most of the time. However your demonstration should be on in "in vehicle application" where you are not able to simply knock it out from the backside.

Very interesting, thanks for posting. Can I ask whether anyone has produced a higher ratio diff for these willys jeeps? Their road speed is very slow. That or an electronic overdrive for the gear box. Either of these might be a life saver for those people having to take there vehicles any distance from home for parades etc.

Brian, Do you know if the ring in pinion from a CJ3A will work in a 1970-1971 Dana 44 offset flanged axle. I have a 1953 CJ3A and picked up an offset flanged Dana 44 from a 1970-1971 CJ5 and bought a new carrier for the 5.38 gears. Can I use the ring and pinion out of the stock two piece Dana 44? Thanks for all the great Jeep videos!

With my Ford 8.8 in my explorer, those are filled in, so you cannot use a rear end spreader. it's like they've installed core plugs on each side.

Hey Brian, I have half stripped my rear Dana 44 and I only see an oil seal and a grease seal at the outer ends of the axle tubes where the brake backing plates go. I don't see any inner axle oil seals close to the ring gear as you have shown in the front axle. My rear axle has the little "mythical" breather hole near the spring perch and I am wondering if there needs to be an inner axle oil seal right nexto the axle drive gear bearings like in the front axles. Looking at the Chilton Books Repair and Tune up Guide for Jeep 1945 to 1987 on page 378 it appears that there is a small gap that may allow for an oil seal right nexto the drive gear bearing. Without an oil seal nexto the drive gear bearings, the entire differential and axle tubes are open and oil can flow all the way up the axle tubes to the outer axle ends. Is this normal? While this may be great for driving on level surfaces, what would happen if the axle is lifted up on one side? Would I starve the drive gear and pinion gear of oil? Wouldn't the pressure buildup in the case push oil out of the little breather hole? As always, thanks for the great advice and the great videos.
@metalshaperJeep
@metalshaperJeep 7 жыл бұрын
Mike, there are no inner seals on the rear axle. The front has them but the rear does not. Just an outer axle seal, then your bearing, and then an outer hub seal, just like you see in the video. Don't worry about starving it for oil, fill to the hole on the cover and there will be enough oil for any type of driving. The breather hole is necessary so don't cover it like some guys do. Oil will not flow out of there so don't worry about that. If you are doing a lot of water crossings you can install a fitting into the cover and run a hose up to a higher point so you won't take in water. That would be the only time you should plug the axle hole breather. Without a vent pressure would build and push it out the axle seals or pinion seal. Make sure the hole is clear.

how important is the dust shield? My yolk is in good shape, good seal surface, but the dust shield is loose and no longer pressed in place.
@metalshaperJeep
@metalshaperJeep 6 жыл бұрын
Some early vehicles came without a dust shield so not too important, but depends on type of driving you do. Often times the shield gets loose so you can tack it on or use an adhesive type product to glue it in place if you want it on there.

All the lubricants that I sell are in stock and ready to ship. Contact me at metalshaper@comcast.net when you are ready for the lube. As far as the seal goes you can get the correct one from many of the jeep parts dealers out there. Check with Pete Debella Jeep Parts in New York. Tell him Brian sent you and he will get you exactly what you need.

You can still find the miller tool on ebay and a couple other sites. The part number is Miller W-251. they are getting expensive but worth it. Also check out my transfer case teardown video and look in the comments. There is a you tube member A Dog who says seals are easy to get out. Maybe let him know the truth. good luck with your transfer case.

Watch this video kzbin.info?o=U&video_id=V_j583dwSPQ you will see an axle puller that I built specifically to pull out rear axle shafts that are sometimes stuck or sticky inside the spider gears or because of the rear bearing cup being tight. Whatever the problem this puller will get the axleshaft out. Brian

How did you remove the yoke? I am struggling for three days to get mine off without breaking it. Bent two pullers trying to remove it. Heat, Pb Blaster, special bar with a slid hammer and nothing. If you could give some pointers on getting these off a 60+ Dana 44 that would be awesome. Thank you
@metalshaperJeep
@metalshaperJeep 6 жыл бұрын
I showed in the video the tools used to remove the yoke. You either need a puller like I showed or make a heavy duty one with a nut and pressure screw. I have never had a yoke that didn't come off with this tool. You need direct pressure on there to remove stubborn yokes. Brian

Hi, After you removed the pinion yoke nut, you used that puller tool. Is there another way of getting around that if I do not have that tool? Thanks
@metalshaperJeep
@metalshaperJeep 6 жыл бұрын
sometimes the yoke comes off easily and sometimes it comes off very hard. Depends on what yours is like. You can use a 2 jaw puller or make one out of a plate that bolts to the yoke and has a pressure screw in the center.

Is it normal to be at 40 in pounds rotational torque after oil slinger and seal were installed? When I put on yoke without it was at 16 in lbs torque.
@metalshaperJeep
@metalshaperJeep 7 жыл бұрын
are you using new or old bearings? The oil seal does add a lot of torque when reading rotational torque so just be sure you have the right amount of preload when you had just the yoke on and you will be fine.
