I enjoyed watching the seat cutting. I’ve never seen it done before. It’s amazing how that’s just a hand crank on the cutter 🤯

does this make the valve sit lower in the head, or does it sit at the original height? I just want to know if the valve would need to be modified

This is a great video! Thank you for taking the time to educate everyone on this process. I know in my current project i'm just getting ready to build my block (L head), and I will be using this information although I'll be using stones.

Grinding stones work fine, just take your time and make sure everything is concentric.

Great vid. If you don't get a centered lap line on the valve, how do you polish out the line so you can re-lap it after you re-cut the seat?

Hi Brian, I was wondering about the valve contact ring width. Are you concerned about how big or small it is or just that it’s in the middle of the valve face? Enjoy your videos. Jason
@metalshaperJeep5 жыл бұрын
Yes, the width is a factor as well. Most important though is location,...... should always be in the middle of the valve.
@GeeenJ5 жыл бұрын
i always lap the valves in regardless of how good the seat cutters are i've found in the past that not lapping them in they tend to not seal as well
@metalshaperJeep5 жыл бұрын
I always lap valves as well. Neway has done extensive testing and says that after the valve seat is cut with their cutters the valves do not need to be lapped. I still always lap them though, just like you.
@TheOriginalUberGoober4 жыл бұрын
metalshaper neway is dead wrong. Always need to be lapped. Always.
@jbpost523 жыл бұрын
the focus was blurry on displaying the center of the ring on the valves. How wide of a band are you looking for on the valve after lapping them?

The cutters for the L-Head were #205 & #622. What size pilot guides would you use for the L-head? Cannot seem to find a kit out there that is for the L-head, but maybe I am overlooking something. Great video.

What a great series! Pretty amazing the tolerances on these older engines. Do you know if these tools and techniques were used on rebuilds, say, in the '60s (for a '50s block)?

How do valve seats get out of round in the first place?
@metalshaperJeep4 жыл бұрын
High mileage, incorrect valve adjustment, poor fuel, and just the repeated pounding they get from many miles of use.

Your concentricity is out because of the new guides I would suspect. Now if you were using old seats I doubt you would be off .020. Just in my experience. Anytime guides are replaced the concentricity is off. That’s because guides never go in exactly as they came out. This is why every time any good shop changes guides they should cut the seats like you did. These Neway kits you would think are made of solid gold though lol.
