Finally, the best comparative review of the Pro Staff 97L, 97 and RF97 in a short and sweet video packed with good analysis! Glad that the good doctor took the initiative to review the 97L, being the most overlooked variant. I have both the Pro Staff 97L and 97 v13. I play my best tennis whenever I wield the Pro Staff 97(315g) which is strung with the Tecnifibre Triax at 52lbs to experience the classic feel of the racquet. I also play with the 97L variant when I'm in a 'light & easy' mode, but the slightly thicker beam width of 23mm affords free power, added stability and it is a joy to play with due to its manoeuvrability - one can't dismiss the 97L as an inferior variant as it is quite powerful albeit the lower swing-weight. I dare say that the Pro Staff v13 is quite an engineering marvel in racquet technology, as the 97L is not very far off from the performance of the 97. Looking forward to more comparative reviews from this channel!

Thanks for the kind words👍 I’ve always been intrigued by the light variant rackets and can they compete with the others - I found the 315 to be just one of the most comfortable frames I’ve played with in quite some time- the L was actually really nice from the baseline but I don’t think I could ever really use it just due to the net play and the fact that I go through a lot of serve and volley spurts - I’d like to do the same kind of comparison for all of these L, mid, tour rackets so hopefully they’ll be coming out soon !

RF97 works like a dream for me. Deep, crisp pocket on flat serves and volleys. The head light balance means that the heaviness of the racket gives the whippy feel a lot of stability. Sometimes it's a little unforgiving on the groundstrokes, but I see it as a teaching tool to refine my fundamentals. Great review!

Love the format of your reviews - gives the viewer a much more practical idea of what each racquet can do. I like that you use numbers. I have used RF97A for a few years - I have tried many other racquets usually lighter ones but I always come back to RFA - I love to try & take over points with this on the forehand side and the fact it is great on defence and can not be bullied by pace and spin from my opponent. Slice backhand is also fantastic. Serves are great also but like you suggest I am probably losing a little on kickers due to me not being able to move the mass fast enough but it's decent enough and a small price to pay overall. If I struggle with an opponent I know it's all on me. This racquet inspired me to improve my strength and fitness so no excuses about fatigue with the mass of it. Meanwhile, I'll keep doing my rotator cuff exercises to try and get that kick serve to pop more. :-)

For anyone who is considering 97L vs 97 mid due to the racquet’s weight, definitely go for 97 mid as long as you get the right technique, unit turn, follow through, … then the weight difference is not the matter at all but help you for a more solid stroke and reliable at the net

How many decades do you think it will take for a newbie to go from 0 to a solid 4.5-5.0 to be able to play well with a 315g racquet? :) 315 is a very, very demanding racquet. And it is not about your physical strength. Only ATP/former ATP and silly amateurs play with 315g racquets. :) I played with Head Speed Pro 315g and I loved it, though. However, that was many years ago when I was a total newbie. I play with 97L and I am happy with it. I wish there was a 300-305g 97 version of Pro Staff.

Great review. As i have got older I have gone from ProStaff 95, 97s and now 97L. Its been my shoulder slowly not wanting the weight. I now understand why my volleys aren't as crisp, and why some of the harder hit shots pop off my racket. The 97l is great though as it is so consistent: if you stay at the back, and stay in the point, opponents try too hard and drop the point. I still loved that 97s though!

The RF97 racquets have always been a drag in the second hour of playing bc it its the heaviest. The 97Light is too weightless for someone physically strong, even older players with good technique and a strong game. I have been playing Pro Staff for many years. Great job! Best review I’ve seen so far. I’ve not tried the 97 yet, but I can imagine you’re right about it being fit for the average player based on my one match experience with the RF97(v11). I was amazed by how much it improved my serve and swing volley. It does charge its price in the one handed backhand, though. Nothing I can’t adjust with practice, but it’s noticeable that you must make an extra effort to hit on time. I’m not too much of a net player, so I’ll have to play more to evaluate the net volleying. Nevertheless, I am sold on it. My partner, who lended it to me, went back home with a 340g lighter racket sack.

Excellent review. I am used to heavier frames (though softer and with lower flex) and after demoing the RF97 Autograph, decided to order a custom frame in gloss paint (which is much more resilient than the rubberized paint). Despite the higher stiffness rating, it is excellent with gut or a soft multi filament in the mains crossed with a softer poly. I did not like the frame at all with a full polyester bed even at lower tensions. Easy spin, power and very stable.

Used to play with the older RF97 for being a Fed fanboy, then realized I couldn't really handle it and tried other brands, Head, Babolat, Yonex, you name it... Now I think I found my perfect racket with the 97 v13, I love the feel and the fact that it's a little more forgiving than older prostaffs, and the weight pretty much hit the sweet spot for me. I did add some lead tape at 12 o clock which gives me a little more plow through. I string it with technifibre nrg2 17 gauge at 53/50, and a control and feel oriented racket together with a powerful string just does the trick for me as it gives me options to be aggressive or consistent whenever I want. The racket is just really versatile and I am glad you found the 97 to be the overall best out of the 3!

Heavy is good to a point. People should use the heaviest racquet their arm can handle, not just in individual shots, but through an entire match. Like you said, the heft of the RF started to wear on you towards the end, which starts to negate some of the benefits of a heavy racquet. I think a bigger problem though, is people using a racquet that is too light. Especially among newer players who are sold on the idea that bigger and lighter is better.

I also prefer its ability to hit a heavy ball as you point out. To me it is a good bit heavier than the mid version. But the mid version is great too. I don't really have a problem with the weight. I go back way beyond you when rackets were heavy so I prefer a heavy racket. The serve of the RF is so far superior that I use it mostly. Thanks I appreciate the kind words- I tend to agree with you about the RF vs the mid, the only reason I would gravitate toward the mid is that I like to hit with a lot of top and sometimes side spin and the weight/balance of the Mid allows me more whip deeper into a match

I've had them for 6 years ans I feel that they are exhausted haha ... Thank you so much ! 🙏🏼

Thanks! So I find my old RF more forgiving but that may be because I’ve been playing with them for a few years now, the v13 had more power as well and I think that’s just because the racket is brand new - I don’t personally think there is a huge difference between the two, I’ll bet if you painted them the same it would be hard to tell the difference

Another great review. I've been loyal to Pro Staff's since the Sampras/Edberg era. I currently have v11 of the Pro Staff 97. I've read the difference is not very noticeable between v11 and v13? Also, what are those kicks you are sporting on the court???
@FootDoctorZach4 жыл бұрын
Thanks! They’re the Nike court tech challenge 20, review will be out tomorrow - as far as the pro staffs go there arent a ton of differences from 11-13 but I will say on the 97 mid it felt like it had a bit more forgiveness than the previous models - I wouldn’t say it’s anything earth shattering or anything that will all of a sudden start making you jump a level but it is a very comfortable racket for all the control you’re getting
@joshuab17074 жыл бұрын
Having been a user of the v11, I'd have to say the v13 has better dampening built in, without a loss in feel. Also, the tighter stringbed in the sweet spot offers far better ball pocketing on a clean shot than the v11. Hitting off-center is also less jarring in the v13. Also, it may just be Wilson quality control, but the v13 feels lighter than my v11. I am considering buying a second V13 if I can't get customize the V11 to feel more like the v13 in terms of swingweight.

I really appreciate your attention to detail in reviewing these 3 racquets. I've had wrist and elbow surgery and am working on building my arm strength back up. It was actually using the 97 mid that caused a bit of pain to flare up in my arm. That's why I would lean toward the 97L, as anything above 310 is still giving me some discomfort. Having tested it so thoroughly, would you recommend adding weight to the 97L to get it up to 305 or 310? And where precisely would you recommend adding weight?
@FootDoctorZach2 жыл бұрын
Honestly I couldn’t tell you depends on your swing style and speed- I’m not a huge fan of adding that much weight though- I’ve never been able to get it perfect across my 3 rackets so I’m usually trying to just mess with weight within a small weight and pick a racket that just suits me better in its stock specs but that’s just me

I've been a long time pro staff user. My first one being the 6.1 classic. Then I moved on to a BLX Pro Staff Six.One 95. And a few years ago I tried the PS 97 (2016 red and black model). I wasn't a huge fan, didn't seem to offer the same stability my BLX model had. But A few months ago I demoed the Pro Staff 97 V13 (mid model) and fell in love immediately. Had greater feel and stability than the BLX and far better ball pocketing and access to power when I need it, despite being a control-oriented frame. I bought it right after my play test and will probably get a second one as I am currently experimenting with various strings and being able to switch back and forth would be nice. Btw if anybody recommend some strings for this racquet, please let me know. I have so far tried a couple hyrbid setups: Luxilon ALU Power in the mains and Wilson Sensation in the cross (56/58). And also Solinco Confidential in the mains and Gamma Live Wire Professional in the cross (54/56) which is currently my favorite of the two setups. I am looking for great feel and access to spin, longevity not really a concern to me.
