I’m not used to th e lighter racket as I’m just getting back into tennis. I had a stretch 5.0 hyper carbon and wasn’t framing it and it’s a 95 in head. I might add a little bit more head weight to my 97. I’m just swinging too fast that I was framing at least half my shots. 11 oz feels nice to hold and carry around but I definitely do need a little bit more weight. Maybe that will compensate a little for my fast swinging habit

I have this racket. Demo'd it on the day it came out and was immediately smitten! I have now been playing with it for a month and can honestly say it's the best frame I've ever played with. However, note for anyone rushing out on my recommendation...i grew up in the 80's when graphite was just arriving on the scene and I always played with heavy stiff frames. It's all about what suits your game. I play with a full western grip so I don't struggle to generate topspin and I have a one handed single hand backhand which I truly believe gets the best out of a frame like this. Consider your game and if you struggle to generate your own power, this isn't the racket for you, but if you're someone with sound technique that doesn't need the racket to help you deliver pace and depth, consider giving this a go.

Excellent review! what is your view on starting a match with the heavier RF97 and then (after a set or so if/when your arm starts aching) to move to the 97m for the remainder of the match? I have been using a heavier Karakal racquet (334gm, and with slightly wider grip) to start, then moving to a slightly lighter Karakal racquet (328gm, and with slightly narrower grip) as i find the 'easing off' of potential arm strain that way. No repercussions felt after a match though, so don't feel like I'm harming myself. (Looking to trial the RF97 and 97m to replace my aging Karakals.)

Hi Jonathan. Thanks for dropping by and asking a few questions. The sweet spot is on the smaller side, but it's excellent when you find it. As for string sensitivity, I don't think this frame is highly sensitive to specific string setups and tensions. I've played with a few different variations, and it's worked well every time. Regarding the denser string pattern, it's an improvement for those who appreciate tighter patterns, but overall, it still leans toward the performance of a 16x19. I hope that helps!

Hello, I used to play tennis a lot but I stopped for a couple of years. Because I don't have a racket right now I borrowed for a couple of days the Tecnifibre x-code, yesterday I tried another one - the 97L v12 and I felt amazed with how much control it has compared to the Tecnifibre! I want to ask do you think the 97L v13 would have the same control and feel as the 97L v12? Another thing that worries me is that if I should go for the 97 v13 instead. Do you think that in terms of control would be the same as the 97L v13? Also if I buy the 97L v13 what string and tension would you suggest if I want control spin and durability?

Hi there - thanks for dropping by with a question. The Pro Staff 97L v12 and v13 are very comparable racquets with similar specs. If you enjoyed hitting with the 97L v12, then you'd very likely enjoy the latest v13 model. Comparing the 97L to the 97, I'd give the 97 the edge in control. However, it's also nearly an ounce or 26g heavier, which for some players can be more of a burden and detract from their overall performance. If you felt good about the weight of the 97L and can't test or demo the 97 before buying it, then you'd likely be better suited sticking with the 97L, which you can always customize to increase its weight. As for strings and tension, the Pro Staff 97L v13's recommended tension is 50-60 lbs, so finding somewhere toward the middle of that range is a great place to start. Then, based on your experience, you can modify up or down to your preference. Hi there @TennisCompanion i am struggling to decide between the pure strike 3rd gen 16x19 and this pro staff v13 315g. Before those i bought the ezone 98 tour, but found it sluggish and erratic at times. The strike seems to have more free power, but the pro staff is more accurate. Did you tested both? Pretty decent update here by Wilson but it doesn't have the plow through, pop or pure feel (as this one's more muted) on ball connection as the PS 85 & feels underpowered imo. It has a nice weight & headlight feel in hand & very favorable on the control side but the lack of plow through makes it a bit tiring to play with to obtain consistent depth on your shots imo. Not a great defensive racket either against big hitters (again due to lack of plow through) imo. Maybe adding 4-6g of lead tape in the head might resolve the plow through issue but idk. The velvet super matte finish is just ok as black color is somewhat muted as a result & looks more like something between a black & grey color imo. I think a glossy finish would have provided an improved look. Thanks for the detail review.

Hi there - great question. I have a lot of experience with the Wilson nCode Six-One 95, and the Wilson Pro Staff 97 v13 will be the closest. The Pure Drive is an excellent frame, but it's in an entirely different class, which, as you described, includes lots of power. Usually, I'd encourage players to explore less expensive options, i.e., string setup, tension, etc. with their current frame before jumping to a new one. However, you'll be hard-pressed to find what you're looking for with the Pure Drive if the Wilson nCode Six-One 95 was a favorite.

Hi Sergio - thanks for stopping by with a question. The Wilson Pro Staff 97 and Babolat Pure Drive Team are two very different racquets - both of which can work well for players. Here's a quick spec comparison of the most recent models: *Babolat Pure Drive Team 2021* Head Size: 100 in / 645 cm Strung Weight: 10.6oz / 301g Swingweight: 313 Balance: 5 pts HL Beam Width: 23mm / 26mm / 23mm Stiffness: 69 String Pattern: 16x19 *Wilson Pro Staff 97* Head Size: 97 in² / 626 cm² Strung Weight: 11.7oz / 332g Swingweight: 321 Balance: 7 pts HL Beam Width: 21.5mm / 21.5mm / 21.5mm Stiffness: 66 String Pattern: 16x19 On the Babolat side, you're getting added power and spin, while on the Pro Staff side, you have enhanced control and precision. As far as an upgrade from the Babolat frame, the two significant differences will be the weight, as you mentioned, and the head size. With a year under your belt, you may be making a move a little prematurely as the heavier frame and smaller head size will require an adjustment period that may frustrate you more than help. Ultimately, the Pro Staff 97 is more of a demanding racquet, and although it's a manageable change, it will take some added patience. If you like the idea behind the Pro Staff, then you might consider the Pro Staff 97L, which is 306g, only 5 grams heavier than the Pure Drive Team. Moving to that frame would allow you to become familiar with the smaller 97 in² head size without managing the extra weight, which can be beneficial as you continue to develop your skills, and then leave you room to upgrade to the standard Pro Staff 97 in 1-2 years. The type of game or style of play you're striving for is also worth considering. For example, if you like the idea of play with heavier topspin, then the Pro Staff line will likely leave you wanting more, which is one of the reasons many players gravitate toward the Pure Drive and Aero. I don't view it as one is better than the other - each racquet just caters to a specific type of player, so you need to weigh that in your decision. I hope that helps or at the very least helps point you in the right direction!

Have you tried the pro staff black edition non countervail 315 gr? (it released about april 2020) If yes is there any significant difference bettween this one and v13? They say that the new one is more stable and soft but less power.Nice detailed video!

Hi Bill - thanks for the note! Yes, I've hit with the previous black edition in non-countervail, and there are some differences, as you've noted. Most notably, the Braid 45 construction and String Mapping adjustment they've made to the frame. The former adjusts the angle of the graphite/Kevlar weave, while the latter increases the density of the stings toward the center of the frame for added control. Beyond that, the specs remained virtually identical, with a minor decrease in swingweight of only 3 pts for the newer model. As far as performance changes go, I find the latest model to offer an enhanced feel, a slight improvement to comfort and stability, and better overall control. We're not talking about significant changes in the grand scheme, but I prefer the latest model's refinements.

For some reason I like the more powerful response of the Pro Staff No CV, but my 2 V13's still play great. I just do not like that they have changed the buttcap. I like the more "flat" pro staff buttcap and is one reason I never liked any other racket. I just like the old buttcap but still great racket!

Hi Plamen, It's a decent bump in weight, but I don't think it's an unrealistic change. With that said, everyone responds to changes in weight differently, and I would expect you'd have an adjustment period, so you'd likely have to be patient with it out of the gate as you build up to using it. In a perfect world, I'd encourage you to demo or borrow the new racquet to get a feel for the difference, but I realize that's not always possible. If not, I'd expect it's a transition most players in your situation could manage. All the best, Jon

Hi Andre! Thanks for the note. I found this version to offer a bit of extra comfort relative to some of the older models, which I'd attribute to the new Brand 45 construction. The Pro Staff 97 v13's mid to upper-end RA or stiffness rating of 68 might give players with arm issues pause. However, with this frame, there's more to the equation. I find the racquet's meatier weight of 11.7 oz combined with its HL balance of 7 pts (maintaining extra weight in the handle) helps offset what could otherwise cause some players issues. Another element that helps reduce shock and vibration is the construction, which weaves together graphite and Kevlar - the latter with dampening properties. I'd further layer onto that equation the string setup you choose if you were to opt for this frame. Ideally, I'd recommend a hybrid for someone in your shoes, stringing a multifilament or gut in the mains and polyester in the crosses. As for tension, it's always something that takes a bit of experimentation for each player to nail down. I tend to prefer my hybrids a bit tighter since the multi/gut adds power, so a reasonable starting point given the frames recommended range of 50-60 lbs would be to string the mains around 57 and the crosses 55. Although not required, a small variance is common to allow for added string movement to enhance spin. Thanks for your detailed feedback. Went ahead and bought. Strung it with Babolat natural gut at 52. Perhaps just first time usage but the original I thot beats it by a mile, tho v13 has better feel. The original I put in Dunlop Black Widow at 48. Have added 6 grams of weight ar top of handle, added second wrap (on 4 1/4 grip size) which took strung weight to 446 ish and so far felt awesome. Heavy-ish yet solid and still arm friendly as racket generates its own momentum upon release. Thanks for your work.

Hi John, great review. Been playing for last 5 years with ProStaff 97S(Dimitrov’s 18x17, with 19,5mm beam). Love the stability, precision and control of the racket, but having a lot of shoulder and elbow issues. Trying this ProStaff 97 v13 and seems a bit more maneuverable due to lower swingweight, but found it very stiff with Alu Power 125 and couldn’t play with topspin which I rely on a lot. Any suggestion of hybrid strings that might help me with this ProStaff 97 if I look for confort and spin, besides the natural virtues of the ProStaff? My other option is moving to a Clash, but trying to resist because of the lack of precision, control and stability, specially against heavy hitters where I feel a little bullied with the Clash. try demo ps97 and rf97 at the same time. I currently play with RF97 with eastern grip, 1hbh too. It is very stable but it is slow to return unexpected shots. Also, forehand groundstroke shots are underwhelming in terms of power because its swing is a bit too slow. Feels like I carry a desk in the air when try to do a full blown forehand. I soon will demo the PS97 too. I want to switch to other rackets.

Hi Mohit - thanks for the question. Racquet weight is a personal preference, which most players develop over time and often changes as a player's skills improve. If possible, I'd encourage you to demo a few racquets with different weights to feel things out. However, with that said, I recognize that's not easy or always possible, so a strung weight range you'd likely fall into is somewhere between 298 g (10.5 oz) and 326 g (11.5 oz). There are quite a few options to consider in that spectrum. In my review of the Babolat Pure Aero, I strung Babolat RPM Blast at 52 lbs (23.6 kg) and used the stock Babolat Syntec Pro grip along with a Babolat Pro Tour overgrip on top. A few other strings I enjoy with the Pure Aero are: - Luxilon ALU Power - Volkl Cyclone - Solinco Confidential The Pure Aero that I use regularly has a leather Tourna grip with a Wilson Pro Overgrip. Lately, I've been hitting it with Solinco Confidential.

Hi Filipe - great question. I wouldn't recommend this model for a hard-hitting 12-year-old as it can be a lot of weight to handle for some full-grown adults. However, Wilson does make a few excellent alternatives for younger children. The Pro Staff 26 is likely your best bet for that age, which has the same cosmetic. However, it's only 26 instead of 27 inches in length and weighs 8.47 ounces (240 g) instead of 11.07 oz (314 g) - it's considerably more easy to handle. If the child is already using a full-size 27-inch racquet, then there's also the Pro Staff 97UL or ultralight. It's 9.48 oz (269 g). Hopefully, that helps, and thank you for the kind words!

Im using a full size racket size 2 4¼ and its around 290 grams so i think im ready for a little bit more weight but do you think you can feel that 15 or 20 grams allot more heavier?

IMO the 20g jump is very significant. Speaking from personal experience jumping from 300g racquet to 320g. It's also a stiff frame so do take note. Last thing is Wilson doesn't have the best quality control and please try not to end up with one with abnormally high swing weight which can be harmful to your game.

Hi there - the 97L is a solid option that's almost a full ounce or 26 grams lighter than the Pro Staff 97, but the specs do change quite a bit. Here's a look at some of the key differences: Pro Staff 97 - Strung weight: 11.7oz / 332g - Balance: 7pts HL - Stiffness: 66 - Beam: 21.5mm / 21.5mm / 21.5mm Pro Staff 97L - Strung weight: 10.8oz / 306g - Balance: 3pts HL - Stiffness: 69 - Beam: 23.5mm / 23.5mm / 23.5mm As you can see, the weight is changing, but the balance, stiffness, and beam width all shift quite a bit and help maintain a bit of power. Ultimately, you end up with a racquet that feels slightly different but swings much easier, so if that's a priority worth considering.

Hey Andy, you said you tested the Tecnifibre TFight RS 305. I tested the whole series (300, 305 and 315). I really did like the 305, but surprisingly i found the 300 with one gram of lead at 6 o'clock to be the hidden gem of the line. You might want to test that one if you have not already, Cheers

Although the Pro Staff 97UL is closer in weight to your existing racquet, I tend to air on the side of encouraging players to go with a little extra weight and would expect you'd have no issues handling the 97L if you're looking to hit with the Pro Staff line. One of the more significant changes for you will be reducing head size, which will likely take some time to transition. As an intermediate player, it's certainly not an unreasonable switch to make, but you may need a bit of extra patience with the change 😄
