As 2018 NBA All-Star Joel Embiid puts it, Wilt Chamberlain was "so freaking athletic". Watch a few clips and listen to a bit of the testimony that indicates this guy was a special world class athlete from his teenage years into his 50's at a variety of sports. He was that athletic even with 300 pounds or more spread over a frame more than 7 feet tall.

Wilt never got the respect he deserved from the NBA. Wilt passed in about 1999 or so and I don't feel the NBA did enough to honor this incredible athlete and basketball player.

+Kevin P I totally agree! Larry Bird also had much less talent around him than Magic. People never talk about that, but Bird would have won more rings with the kind of talent the Lakers were stacked with. I also agree with "Tim Barringer" about the lack of celebrating him upon his death. I remember being very pissed about that. Chamberlain, I believe, was the greatest basketball player, EVER! On a personal note, in about 1971 I was watching a Laker game with my dad. My dad was the baddest man I have even met in my life. He was 6'3" and 220 in his prime. He was a bar owner in a rough part of town and cleaned the bar up from bikers, whom he was targeted by and was jumped by 3 bikers (per the leader) -- he kicked the crap out of all 3 and put 2 in the hospital (this is just one of many "incidents"). People (bullies and bad guys) were terrified of him. He was even approached by a couple of mob guys that offered him a job as a collector. Anyway, my dad told me while watching that game that "...Wilt Chamberlain is the strongest man I've ever seen. He is so strong, he has muscles in his shit."

That's because nobody liked him. At the time at least he was an insufferable douchebag, by all accounts. When he averaged 50 points and 25 boards a game in 61-62, MVP voting was done by the players. Wilt didn't even get close to Russell who won--- he only won 9 first-choice votes out of all 85 players.

When your from Kansas like myself you better know about Wilt or your hiding under a rock. That's the golden rule. My college coach at Emporia State coached alongside Larry Brown in 88 at kansas. My coach's father and Larry played against wilt in 57 in the national title game. They both played for UNC. If you don't know who Doug and David moe are you do now. Dean Smith was the UNC grad asst at UNC at the time in 57 and Dean played ball at Kansas under only the second coach ever to coach at Kansas and that coach played under the inventor of the game. darrin cleary Yeah he could since you're not allowed to touch players in today's league. In Wilts era, he used to get triple and quadruple-teamed all the time and still scored effortlessly. He would straight-up embarrass any big man today when he's actually played against better who are all in the Hall of Fame as well. He would average 50 attempts today no problem when he averaged alot more in his era since the game was played at a faster pace back then.
@JSwanKilowJ
@JSwanKilowJ 6 жыл бұрын
now of course theres the question of would they feed him the ball like that or would they start playing selfish. but if they feed him the rock, he's scoring damn near every time. and with a three point line now, he's out of this world. Tommy Heisholm talked about how he would watch Wilt in practice, basically shooting free throws from half court. remember that warm-up shot chart they did on Curry? Wilt would go 20/22 from half court in his practices. yeah, against modern defense where you practically have to let the opponent score, Chamberlain would EASILY average 60.

Sure Joel is very good and is considered a great of his era but he understands the abilities and skills of Wilt's being superior than his. So someone will probably say Wilt cant shoot 3s. (There was no 3pt line back then. Wilt made 15 for 20 from half court in practice. Made 3 in a row 3s after being retired and shooting around with then current NBA players. 1 NBA player bet he could not do it and he did it and won $10.

When a man like Wilt, who was a freak of nature, records 52 pts, 32 rebs, 24 blks, 11 stls and 14 asts in a single game, then how can you tell me he isn't arguably the greatest ever? The man could do anything he wanted to do on the court and still to this day way ahead of his time. I never judge a player by how many rings since its a team accomplishment, I go by skill set and what facets he brings to the table as he was the complete package.
@letmegetuhhh3959
@letmegetuhhh3959 6 жыл бұрын
Tyler Hingleton stats are a bad way to judge players of different eras. This was a league where it was easier to get stats because of of weak comp and the pace of the game of course his numbers look better. He was the most dominant player of his era and had a good team with Jerry west and still underperformed in terms of rings I understand it's a team achievement but if you're doninqnce doesn't help your team win then what's the point.
6 жыл бұрын
Let Me Get Uhhh I don't just look at stats. Like I said before, he mastered every facet of the game and played against some of the greatest big men of all time like Bill Russell, Abdul-Jabbar, Walt Bellamy, Dolph Schayes, Willis Reed, Nate Thurmond, Bob Pettit, Jerry Lucas, Dave Cowens, Bob Lanier, Wes Unseld, Artis Gilmore etc. He used to dominate each and every one of them individually on a daily basis and used to get tripled and quadruple-teamed when getting the ball in the post, so don't tell me he had it easy. The league implemented rules to try and stop Wilt at the time like widening the lane and even allowed opposing players to maul him at will cuz he made the game look so easy. You're judging a past-his-prime Wilt who came back from knee surgery and played with the likes of West and Baylor who were also on the tail end of their careers. I'm talking a prime Wilt with the Philadelphia Warriors and Sixers who was an unstoppable force who always ran into the greatest dynasty in the Celtics who were loaded with Hall of Famers and arguably the greatest head coach in Auerbach. Winning is a team accomplishment and not the ultimate way to judge a great player like I said before. If you want to talk about championships, then Bill Russell is the greatest, and not someone like Michael Jordan. Watch the Wilt Chamberlain scouting report and you'll see what I'm talking about.
@jerrybrownell3633
@jerrybrownell3633 6 жыл бұрын
A players greatness isn't defined by Championships or rings. Robert Horry won 5 Championships yet hardly anyone would vote him among the top 50 of all time. Jerry West lost 7 NBA finals yet nearly everyone would have him in the top 50 if not top 20 all time.

Hakeem was a post work master. Wilt was the block master, the greatest rebounder in NBA history, only bigman to lead the NBA in assists, has thr all time APG record for Centers, all time record of RPG, #2 All time in PPG. Sure Wilt did not have a dream shake, but he mastered the fadeaway, finger roll and more. Look up Wilt finger rolls and you will see ones you probably never seen before. He did it so great he made fools of his defenders. He could finger roll high up without even getting a running start.

Was lucky to grow up seeing him in his prime. He did things I've never seen since on a basketball court, and no longer think I ever will. Jerry West said it best, and with West's background as a highly successful GM after his HOF career, his opinion outweighs any of the kids here who never saw him play. West said if he were playing today he'd lead the league in scoring, rebounding, and blocked shots just as he did back in the day.

Wilt is I believe the unquestioned greatest "athlete" to play basketball. The combination of size at a real 7 ft 1 (listed-not in high heels like Dwight Howard), speed and strength we have never seen. He's legitimately a LeBron James just half a foot taller. I'd still say Jordan was the better basketball player, in terms of being a more rounded player, but wilt is easily the better athlete. Shaq came the closest to showing us a modern Wilt, sadly he just didn't have the work ethic outside of the basketball court in terms of staying shape and truly trying to dominate the league rather than just bullying it by being 400 lbs.

The real kicker is the fact that Wilt was over 7 feet tall and near or around 300 pounds. Now you want to talk having full body control at that huge size yet able to move like someone who's a foot or more shorter and 100+ pounds less. Not many understand how incredible that really is because most of us are nowhere near that physically imposing, and so we cannot relate. Probably the greatest athlete of all time. Also the strongest. In about 1971 I was watching a Laker game with my dad.

I've never understood the argument for GOAT being anyone other than Wilt. All the arguments have to tear him down to hold water. "Sure, Wilt had a 100 point game and that fear will never be repeated, but today's NBA is different." That number alone is staggering. Then you round it out with all his other stats and sheer athleticism ... Man, dude was a God! Only man with an argument that rivals Wilt's case for GOAT is the all-time scoring leader. However, since Karl Malone isn't the second best player ever to play the game, then that argument of scoring doesn't hold up.

That said, obviously Wilt (2.16 mts) was and impressive athletes and lifter, but if you see for example Dwayne Johnson (1.91mts) have a similar body and complexion compared to Arnold (1.88) and he couldn't even get close to the 450 pounds (roughly 205kg) Shaquille O'neil (2.16 mts) bench pressed. I agree with therealist811. MJ is the GOAT of basketball. He did every single thing on the court superlatively. Wilt is possibly the greatest athelete who ever lived. But he wasn't the greatest basketball player. Forget rings -- just like Shaq, he couldn't shoot free throws for shit. Don't get me wrong, he's still a GREAT basketball player -- for instance I think Wilt still has the record for most field goals successfully made in a row, which absolutely kills the idea that he was just a volume shooter. But to be the greatest, you can't suck at anything. And MJ, who is honestly probably a greater basketball player than Babe Ruth was a baseball player, and greater than Tom Brady is a football player, and greater than Wayne Gretzky was a hockey player -- for all his greatness and his mental discipline and natural atheticism and tremendous basketball skill, couldn't translate that over into baseball, doing just okay in the minors. On the other hand, Wilt tried out for the Kansas City Chiefs and made the pros look like children in one day. They're both great, but Wilt was greater in a much wider variety of circumstances. Hell, Wilt was even a better actor. MJ was "only" a basketball great.

The athleticism is not even close. You hear about all these 6'10 guys in the NBA. If your 6'8 they say 6'10. 7 footers today are really 6'10 maybe more..Wilt's 440, high jump, shot put and triple jump medals in a major college needs no hyping, it's hard to explain just how amazing that a 7'2 guy could highjump 6'6, hold the Kansas shot put record at 53 feet and more.

I'd like to see a study done to see if opposing teams Fg % dropped a bit while they played Wilt ( especially the Fwd's & center's)....I'd bet they DO go down. Anything near Wilt wooda gotten batted away , or lofted or changed in a big enuff way , to throw it off half the time. No matter what highlight you see of this guy , if someone is within 10-12 feet of Wilt, he went after it. Also, Wilt Chamberlain was a finesse player! He wood time blocks cuz he knew he cood jump high enuff to get to 'em that way. He didnt havta bull-doze thru people. You guys havta remember...Wilt is a product of his environment. He didnt grow up in the 80's or 90's. He grew up learning the game the way it was played at the time. If players back then did a 360 dunk , it was considered in bad taste , as if your rubbing something in..etc. It's not like he coodnt do it , lol. Wilt was physically capable of ANYTHING. I honestly wish Wilt DID do tomahawk dunks & and 360's. However i truly believe that if Wilt had played the game the same way Shaq did, Wilt wooda been thrown out of the NBA in a fuggin HEARTBEAT!! You guys have heard the stories. When Wilt DID play against Magic Johnson , Worthy , King. (the best the NBA had to offer in the 80's AND in their prime ).... Wilt whooped 'em like a dog. Wilt , ANY era , ANY style , Wilt is the G.O.A.T. .......enuff said!

I didn’t get to see Wilt play when he was living. If footage of him did not exist people would say you’re making thing up. I wish footage existed of Wilt dunking his free throws. I have zero doubt he did just that too. RIP Wilt Chamberlain. Thank you for the memories.

Seeing Wilt live was truly an event. He was literally a giant. Perfectly proportioned and behemoth. The greatest ever to play the game and maybe the greatest athlete ever. No one ever talks about his friendship with Arnold Palmer who told the story about one of Wilts first rounds of golf. He shot an 83 with Palmer literally showing him how to play. Incredible.

Wilt in todays game 50 pts 25 rebounds 10 blocks and 15 assists per night. I saw him play so many times and there will never be another like him. Guard fast, great leaper and tireless. What a passer!

People think he couldn't bench 600 pounds and yet they don't look at the mans proportions. Compared him to Shwarzennegger in that photo. He's twice as tall and his muscles are built large, veins popping out like he's a Gymnast. There are guys who look big but aren't strong and than there are guys that are rock solid and are crazy tight, guys like Bruce Lee, like chizeled. The guy looks like he has potential for a 600 pound bench, although he likely doesn't heavy lift. Like Arnold says he does a lot of reps of simple weight which are crazy heavy compared to short people like Arnold.

Wilt did bench press over 600 lbs. twice!

Round yah facts. At his peak he weighed 310 to 320 but it was never listed. Arnold weighed 250 and couldnt even bench close to him and wilt is not even a bodybuilder or powerlifter.

Round wilt was not a power lifter, it was not healthy fo wilt to bench press that kind of weight, he was super strong

The reason people think he couldn't bench that much is because tall guys can not bench as much as shorter people because of the longer arms. The tall guys are stronger but it is easier for shorter guys to bench more weight because there is less space needed to perform the movement. Let alone Wilt Chamberlain who was 7'1 with a 7'8 wingspan. I'm not saying he didn't do it but I highly doubt he did that much weight considering he also claimed to also sleep with 20,000 women. All time great though.

Give it 50 more years, MJ will be forgotten like Wilt. I'm only 37, so in about 50 years I'll be as disappointed about MJ being forgotten as Wilt did for our older generation.

If I could see God and ask him for two sports favors, I'd want to see Wilt play today. And I'd want to see Sugar Ray Robinson vs Floyd Mayweather. I already know what would happen. But I still want to see it. Oh! I'd want to see Jim Brown in today's NFL.

Wilt was unbelievable, as was Jim Brown. I read one time they were at a party and decided to race, I think Wilt ran barefoot and won. As far as Sugar Ray and Floyd go, I'd like to see some of a young Roy Jones Jr. in that mix !

Bo Knows confirm on the race story. In Italy one of the most prominent journalist delivered that story. He's also an eyewitness of a game in ucla in which retired Wilt repeatedly rejected prime magic lay ups. No more lay up in this gym He said after magic called on him offensive foul. Then he executed according to those words that he pronounced.
