That's part of the reason why he is treated like some kind of mythical figure. When I tell people that when I met Wilt Chamberlain (for like 8 seconds) when he was 53 years old, they think I'm exaggerating when I describe the experience . He shook my hand, and it was enveloped. I jokingly checked to see if my hand was there afterward. Guy comes up to me and said "you too, huh?" Look, right off the bat - however the game is played in ANY era, Wilt could adapt with ZERO problem. He proved that in his career. You know what he would've done with Shaq? Made him run up and down the floor until he passed out and threw up. Bill Russell said the same thing when they were interviewed together, and Wilt just smiled. Wilt is the friggin' GOAT, and I am sorry - it's not even close. These "stories" about Wilt are recounted by the greats of the game with credibility if they stuff wasn't on film. Imagine if they kept blocked shots as a statistic?

And i dont think we will ever see it again. Its been 48 years since he retired and a player with that frame, stamina, speed, vert, agility, and strength has not entered the nba yet. Don't forget to get his best track numbers from Kansas. I believe that 4 of Wilt best times and distances were very close to winning bronze metals in the 1960 Olympics. Wilt used track to stay in shape, he didn't train with the track coaches but a think he won 2 or 3 high jumps at the Kansas State Track meet.

You adapt to the times. Shaq did in his era. He grew up watching the most physical game of basketball ever played in the 80's. Wilt would have done the same in the 90's and 2000's and might not have even had the same repertoire as he would have had in Shaq's time. But now the center position is dead as far as how Wilt and Shaq played the game. The whole game has changed once again. It could be argued that Wilt would likely be practicing his mid range to long range jump shots in today's league as the game has spread out so much and it isn't centered around big centers like in past decades.

Great video @Wilt Chamberlain Archives ! I grew up watching The Big Dipper play. His stamina and pure athletic ability transcinds any era of pro basketball. Sports writers complained that all he did was score, so he led the NBA in assist one season. No other center has ever done this. Agility-wise, he NEVER fouled out of an NBA game. Wilt would dominate in any era. He would be the best center today by far. He wouldn't have those crazy 50pt average..etc because the game has changed but he would average 25-32 a game depending on the team he was on. He's gonna lead the league in rebounding and probably blocks. The only disagreement I have is that he would be able to duplicate his stats from the early 60s. The NBA is a much different game now. It would allow even that many rebounds due to shots taken.

IMHO Wilt would have defeated Ali. He had the strength, stamina and staying power to go 15 rounds w/o breaking a sweat and could have taken any punch Ali could have delivered. Think about it, if injuries didn't hamper some crucial parts of his career, if he had star teammates like Bill Russell have, if they recorded blocked shots and other stats they didn't invent yet during Wilt's playing career, Bill Russell won't win those 11 rings and get the recognition that he have if Wilt had those things. C Jo he didn’t pass because that’s what his coaches perfected him to do. The wanted him to be the one man show. Their game plan was to give it to wilt and let him go to work. It was his patellar tendon actually. Was an absolutely devastating injury at that time. Other guys who tore patellar tendons include Cedric Ceballos, Glen Rice, Damon Stoudamire, Alonzo Mourning, and Antonio McDyess. It pretty much ended all of their careers. None of them were all-stars after that injury. Wilt not only came back later that season (although he was noticeably limited), but played three more seasons after that, leading the league in rebounding all three times and making the all defensive team twice.

Sage Antone LeBron is. LeBron can easily get his head at rim, sometimes above the rim, despite being 250 lbs so he has over a 40 inch vertical. Wilt struggles to get his head at the rim despite being 7 foot 1 and lighter, which puts his vert in the low 30's.

His hand was definitely over 12ft, but nowhere near the top but it wasn't extended straight up, but what is more amazing is his head being 3 inches above the rim indicating that he's around a 38 inch vertical just off a drop step block attempt. If he got a running start and got his vertical leap tested, wouldn't be surprised to see him get above a 43 inch vertical which is crazy for being 7'1.

The fact he coild run the quarter is most impressive to me. Russell was a ranked high jumper as well. Ive nevwr seen a competitive athelete run the quarter over 6'5" amd that was only one guy. At that height they lumber or cant move, this guy could sprint and he was strong. Wow. Soccer, water polo, volley ball? Just wow.

He played before blocks shots were a stat, but his games were charted for a time, just to see what he was doing. In the 100 or so games charted, he had a few quadruple doubles, and he AVERAGED almost 9 blocks a game!

I am blessed to have seen Wilt, close up and personal, as a young pup. My uncle would take me to Convention Hall (circa 66-67 championship season) to watch the Sixers play! This was one of the highlights of my youth. Wilt and Luke Jackson (one of the strongest players in his own right) controlled the glass and that Sixers team was tremendous. 😄, all these many decades I've known about this great man, and I learn something about him I never knew. He could dance as well, and believe me when I say this, I'm not the least bit surprised, with his agility and coordination at his size, why wouldn't he be able to dance. He could've probably done anything he put his mind to doing, and I'm positive that not being a good free throw shooter, stuck in his craw. He wanted to be a good free throw shooter, as I know he likely worked at it as intensely as any other aspects of his game. Not doing something well and accepting it, wasn't a part of his DNA, his loar continues to grow...

We argue Lebron vs MJ, but ignore the greats of yesteryear... Lebron is better than Jordan, but in my opinion, Lebron isnt better than the giants and dominant forces of the decades prior... Wilt Chamberlain, Kareem and Bill Russell should be everyones choice of #1 best all time. But we diluted the game to only Jordan and that hes untouchable... It makes me sad that the legends that paved the way are ignored due to the ignorant facts of the era where we had talented teams all around... Wilt's weight hit 292 by the 1964 season, and he was 310-315 during the Laker years [according to Chick Hearn ]. Imagine a man that size, jumping that high, playing those minutes, year after year, in CHUCKS. No wonder he was done after a little over 1,000 games. Now imagine he at least got to play in 1985-vintage Air Jordans, much less the high-tech, super-padded custom shoes worn by today's players. He could easily have played for 20 or more injury-free seasons and 1600+ games.
