I respect your mindset about not wanting anyone to go to jail but in a situation like that the best option probably would've been to call the police before ever laying hands on the guy. He was clearly violent and for various liability reasons its sadly the best choice. Glad it worked out in the end. You're a great story teller with good perspective!

Absolutely, that's why we have weight classes. But of course most big fat guys do not have the cardio to do much. And I'm sure we have all seen giant muscle men getting submitted by white belts under 200 pounds, once they learn a little of course that doesn't happen because size does matter.

@DisinterestedSimp depends on your technique & speed, don’t be ignorant, go online and look up sparring videos, a good choice is mmashredded, he’s about 5’9 140-150 pounds and he beats up guys bigger than him all the time, saenchai the GOAT of muay thai literally toys with bigger opponents, and when he gets serious he almost kills them When it comes to striking speed & technique matters a lot, you can’t just muscle through or use weight to win like in grappling, striking is about landing your hits and dodging incoming hits, speed & technique takes the cake In grappling is really comes down to who’s bigger/stronger with a splash of technique, just the truth, look at the best grapplers, all of them are on steroids, or atleast in really good shape,
@realtruth1448
@realtruth1448 Жыл бұрын
@DisinterestedSimp Let me repeat myself When it comes down to striking, speed & technique are the most important When it comes down to grappling, athleticism(size, strength speed all wrapped together) is 80%, and technique is like 20%, you can take the greatest female grappler in the world and put her on the mat with some guy who can atleast pop off 50 pushups in a row, and she’s getting hammered, just the truth You take the greatest female striker in the world and put her against that same guy, well that guy has a good chance of losing, he’s not gonna know how to defend himself, or actually land a hit, you should really check out guys who actually know how to evade attacks, they literally never get touched 70% of the time when fighting, Grappling & striking are 2 very separate forms of combat that rely on 2 separate attributes

I literally just had this exact conversation on size, and age absolutely matters. I’m 42 yrs old, 5’5” and 165lbs, 18% body fat. I’m a purple belt, and train 10 hours per week, primarily no gi. I also lift pretty heavy 5 days per week. I have been doing that for about 2 years. I was training with this (3) striped blue belt that’s 25 yrs old, 225lb power lifter about 4 months ago at an open mat. We rolled for 17 minutes nonstop no one was able to get any submissions the full 17 minutes. I was in bottom in half guard working a sweep just freaking gassed. He was getting frustrated with my guard. This dude finally just lifted me in the air like I was a sheet of paper. I was in the air over his freaking head. He’s a real cool guy and just laughed and put me back down. Dang profoundly life changing. Just literally helpless. So our rule of thumb: 25-35 lbs is a full belt rank, -10 years is a full belt rank. So alway change your game to adapt to bigger, stronger, younger guys…
@NBeaver-bx4yl

In my personal experience, I am young quite athletic. I weight 175, I can handle well newer guys weighing around 230( 55lbs difference). I can fight but with a lot of trouble guys 240-245. But guys over 260 (if not just fat). there is a few thing I can do. My leverages are just not strong enough to compensate. At a certain point size because too much. Against bigger guys you need the speed, get em on the ground as fast as possible even if not the best position. Move around keep em down and wait for an opportunity. but, I feel like if you are 250 tough you can handle guys 350, as at a point size has diminishing returns. (btw blue belt level)
@ConveyApp
@ConveyApp Жыл бұрын
@@NBeaver-bx4yl I feel that way too. I’m starting to push 170lbs at the moment. I just turned 43 and I’m a baby purple belt. My age seems to be a factor and my weight has dropped a lot over the past 18 months. I can handle mid level white to new blue belts at higher weights without much effort. But right around that (2)+ strip level things start to fall apart. Particularly if they are some what athletic. I’m super strong for my size but that only carries me so far, and I’m not that fast. Old joints and stuff. So everyone should really understand and accept their limitations during this BJJ journey.
@NBeaver-bx4yl

@@ConveyApp yeah what is amazing about BJJ is not that you can beat any one of any size. Its that naturally you would have no chance against someone 70lbs more than you, but with BJJ you actually do have a solid fighting chance. It levels the playing field a lot, but this aint magic

I think this will lead into a good discussion of what's lost in translation from portuguese to english when people talk self defense. Also the Rorion v. Helio perspective. Helio always said bjj is to survive and not get murdered if you run into a guy like you're describing, because you're fucked. He used to say surviving is winning. Rorion was trying to tap into that american disposable income and sell some merch, so he basically said self defense is magic. Old school dudes from brazil are very aware of the size issue.
@ln5747
@ln5747 Жыл бұрын
@Bill Stevens that's debatable. I think you way over downplay the ability of accomplished competition BJJers by calling it pyjama playing in a padded room. Full contact sparring is full contact sparring and most who train will easily fuck up those who don't, regardless of street or dojo. Anyone who trains with either a self-defence or comp emphasis still knows they'd completely handle their newbie white belt self in the street. Untrained are literally useless, groin strikes or not, with the exception of a large size difference or a beginner practitioner.

That's what I told my friends. A black belt is about staying out of the E.R. if you are forced to fight someone physically superior to you. But, there's also the movies that fuel the b.s. in the USA.

@ln5747
@ln5747 Жыл бұрын
@@davidd854 depends what you mean like nothing? In a BJJ match of course they're useless. In a street fight they are close to useless, aside from a very large athletic difference based on size/age, but must be significant. Untrained people have close to zero fighting ability.
@davidd854
@davidd854 Жыл бұрын
@@ln5747 Yeah no. I think you're overrelying on your BBJ skills. Lots of factors in a street fight, difficulty in transferability of BJJ to street scenario (concrete floor, objects around), inclusion of striking possibility. I'm just going on what Wilke said in another video here. You're still dealing with a grown man who's presumably going to try to fuck you up. So I wouldn't count them away to easy, especially if your martial arts background doesn't go outside of BJJ.

Thank you for telling the truth. I have several acquaintances that don’t train at all that have no grip on reality - 1) as it relates to their fighting (“I just see red man” says the guy who works behind a desk all day) or 2) that I can’t take anyone any size because I’m a purple belt. BJJ really checks your ego - I’m been humbled by larger stronger more athletic white belts - especially wrestlers. No rules in street fight - where there are guys that can literally pick you and break you in half and then wrap your belt around your head. Being humble and deescalating - great advice.

I'm 48 now. This video had me laughing and shaking my head at the same time flashing back to my college days when I used to bounce at Fat Tuesday in Coconut Grove, Florida. The best and worst job I ever had. Positives were the friends in the biz I made and the parties after hours. Negatives were babysitting inebriated assholes that couldn't just enjoy themselves without starting trouble and the occasional having to go to task on people. It didn't dawn on me at the time (a lot of things didn't dawn on me in my early 20s) but that was a really dangerous way to make a buck. The crew was tight like family, we took care of each other and there were several of us (large bar with many patrons nightly). One night I will never ever forget - got into a huge bar brawl with off duty officers on the premise! We had 2 officers onsite from a different municipality working that evening and it was them and the bounce staff against a party of off duty officers from another district. What a freakin' mess! I'm 6'3 and walk around at 210 lbs., athletic build with striking / grappling training and I still lift heavy. I had to jump on a giant's back that night and choke him out. I felt like a little kid getting tossed around in the time it took for him to take a nap. If you have other options...don't do it kids...a few of my friends in the biz back in the day had teeth knocked out, fingers broken and one even got stabbed in the stomach (he ended up being fine). Too many other ways to make a few dollars when you're young.

In 1995 I was stationed at Ft. Meade MD. - and one night, myself and 3 other soldiers went out to College Park to have some fun...as Army guys do! We weren't drunk, or aggressive...in fact. We had just stopped into a pizza parlor to get our feed on, before going out drinking...We ordered a pitcher of beer, sat down at a 4 person table, and were enjoying ourselves. The only other customers were a young couple, and a HUGE 6'6" 310 lb Linebacker-type, which we later found out was on the U. Of Maryland football team. As we talked, and waited for the pizza, this brick shithouse who could easily bench 500 lbs got up and loomed over us...One of our companions asked "what's up, dude?" - and was rewarded with a fist to his face the size of Thors' Hammer...which sent him sprawling on the floor! The rest of us jumped up, ready to engage, with one pussy-boy running away outside...The giant directed his anger at.my other friend, landing another punch and knocking him out temporarily...Then turned his attention to ME! He picked me up over his head and tossed me 15 feet towards the plate glass window, where I- thankfully, landed short! I looked up and FEE FI FO FUM...this guy took to steps and landed a giant clubbed fist with a ring on it across my scalp, cutting me open and needing 9 stitches... My friends were recovering by now and were in a state of panic and confusion with this "Bull in a China shop" as he returned to finish the job...He turned his back on me, and I grabbed a metal and plastic chair and was ready to smash it over his head when he saw mw, and let loose a roar!!!...Shitting myself, I did so anyway, and landed it square on his neck and face...which only angered him more! My friend grabbed me, and the 3 of us stumbled our way outside over the overturned chairs and tables...Luckily a College Park Security Guard had just pulled his squad car up to the lights, and I slid across his hood- annoyed, he jumped out and began to yell at me- a reaction I had hoped to elicit...and as all 4 of us Army soldiers cowered behind him, he drew his baton and got on his radio, calling for backup! 3 cruisers, and 7 cops later, and they STILL hadn't arrested the psycho!! We even went down to the station to file a n assault report, which was ignored. Turns out the guy was a star on the team, and the cops knew him. DEFINITELY ROIDING!! That's MY story...and I can totally relate to your situation!!! 😂😂😂😂😂😂 😬😬🫤😟

The drunk bartender is a reason I never allow staff to work at the bars I operate. It is never a good play. Lots of bars in the world you don't drink where you work. If it matters so much that you do then go work there too.

I worked the door from my retirement from Homeland Security until the end of 2021 (COVID, when people lost their fucking minds and we were fighting every other week). You approach the job the same way I do - use your words, take the problem outside if possible, the environment is your friend if you use it correctly, try to keep drunk fucknozzles out of jail unless it’s super serious or unavoidable). Well done sir. I recognized quite a bit in your story. And so was laughing at you. Because I’ve been there. Salute

I’m having flashbacks of drunken yard wrestling with my friends growing up. They’re twins, bout 5’9” maybe 140 pounds a piece, I’m 6’6” and at the time about 290 . Always started out fun, and always eventually went to little pissed off guys trying to bring the giant down. Used to toss them like rag dolls! There was literally nothing they could do. I had the reach, the weight, the leverage. No real skills or anything though honestly, just big and strong. Comes in handy delivering appliances!

Damn. You did a great job portraying the fear and chaos of that situation. I’m very very aware of the fact that there are weight divisions for a reason. Unique physical attributes are problematic even for the most skilled martial artists in a no rules fight. 🤙🤙

No joke, you’re absolutely right that size makes a big difference. I think any grappler who’s grappled big dudes understands just how hard it can be. How you react changes depending on the attackers size. This is also why weapons are so important and should be more socially accepted. However I understand that working security like that at a bar has to be all empty hands fighting. If you were alone though, a weapon may be needed.

really enjoy your stories and insight on how we can fool ourselves. I learned the hard way: i´m 5´7 " and 152 pounds at 48 years old right now. Played rugby all my life, and trained BJJ for nearly 5 years (blue belt), although i haven´t been training BJJ for 6 years now more or less. I keep my self in shape with calisthenics, running, surfing when I can and playing soccer in the weekends on a +45 years league. So last year during a soccer match some guy fouled me cinically, the ball wasn´t even close to where I was, and I lost it. This guy was way taller than me, probably at 6´2" and in my head I was thinking about bringing him to the ground and put some pressure by grabbing his shirt collar just to show him... Thing is I did managed to bring him down easily and was on top of him (some kind of side control) puting pressure on his neck and really not having a plan on how to deal with this guy afterwards if he wanted to have a go at me. Guess I just thought about keeping top control and let some teammates stop the wrestling. Thing is, the guy indeed wanted to have a go after all... He pushed my waist and made me start to raise and got me to my kess, he then shoved me backwards (152 pounds ain´t much right?) and as I fell, i used my right arm to stop the fall while my left hand continued to grab his collar. I felt a pinch on my right shoulder but I was just thinking about how I was going to put my right arm through his neck for a RNchoke (he was with his back to me at the time) and just give him what he was asking for. I went for it but my right arm was not moving... wtf? it was then when his teammates and mine showed up and save my ass. I dislocated the right shoulder and the guy was about to turn around on me and surely fuck me up... Then the pain came and I realized what a fool I was, just for an ego trip. Lesson learned. My Bjj fantasy went away :) 4 months till I was confident enough to start trainging and playing again.

Found this relatable as a bouncer here in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧. A year ago a team of 4 of us at a nightclub were dragging out a 6.4ft male who weight approximately 115kg whom was a bodybuilder on steroids as well as other drugs. The male was attacking people on the dance floor. We had to put him to the floor at least five times including on the stair case. I am 6.2 weighed 95kg at time and was well built with 1.5 years of bjj training, 3 years of Thai boxing training, 2.5 years of judo training and a year of mma training. And there is no way I could have taken on that guy if I was alone.

Danaher and Wiltse my favorite people in Jiujitsu to listen to. Both bouncers too. I wrote this in a prior video but Danaher addresses this in vid 7-8 of feet to floor one, jiu jitsu and self defense. (Moral: throw to stomp). Also use clothes to your advantage if can. But if you’re taking about combat, yeah size matters, training ups your chances, but that’s why weapons and particularly firearms were invented. You want to sport train for absolute self defense, take up competitive pistol shooting, IDPA etc. Attributed to Samuel Colt: “Be not afraid of any man; No matter what his size; When danger threatens, call on me- And I will equalize!” Be not afraid of any man no matter the size count on me to equalize - colt... or another paraphrase .. God created Man, Samuel Colt made them equal....

@@DarkMuj I just don’t believe him.. I’ve seen a few of his videos. He has a cluster B disorder and he’s incentivised to lie and make it seem like he’s been in more fights than he has and has won them so he can make his videos. It’s suspicious that he never gets embarrassed or gets his ass beat. A true narcissist. Always the winner, always the hero. So see through imo.

Great story. I do security myself and train in MMA, BJJ & Wrestling. Done two MMA tournaments. Semi recently had to choke out a patron who was trying to throw a guard over the railing of a stairwell during an ejection. He was fresh out of prison, high on meth or acid so was an absolute unit and strong as fuck. I choked him out 4 times to shut him down cause each time he came too he'd start trying to swing on the guards and punches had zero effect on him. Fourth chokeout he complied with my orders as I too am someone who rather talk to the patron to de-esculate. Only reason he started up agan was cause he saw his girlfriend fighting with the guards and patrons outside so he ran from me and lunged at everyone at the doorway. I had to wrestle him all over the pathway to keep him off the other guards. But yeah he had 7 patrons stomping on his head and haymakering him and he was still trying to get up and fight them once he got away from me when I jumped up from it getting messy with other people swinging punches around me. Didn't know who was who and wasn't risking a soccer kick to the face.

size does matter in this context IF you're trying to be nice like y'all were to that big guy. I'm pretty sure if you had to fight him 1 on 1 and it was a life or death situation, most smaller fighters can and will break both his knees with heel hooks. Ain't no smaller guy wasting his time trying to get a choke submission on someone that much bigger than them. Just a quick heel hook rip with all your might and even a big guy's knee's will shred. Especially if he has zero grappling experience

I had to face off against a 240lb nationally ranked power lifter, drunk , juiced up on tren and on coke.. feels like the same thing, i had no bird though, just a bunch of police foundations chicken shits who ran every time there was a conflict of any kind. It's scary as hell when you know you are gassed and you have to keep the fight up or get seriously hurt.. i firkin hate that part.. so i finally retired at 55, getting too hard to maintain position, even with PEDS.

I completely agree on your self defense philosophy, but its like you tossed it out the window here for a drunk bartender you were probably trying to impress, one that %100 needs to be fired for drinking on the job. That whole scenario could have been avoided if you just lied & said he can stay but just waited for the cops who have numbers tasers & handcuffs. Choking people out like that is going to get someone paralyzed &land you in jail, guaranteed.. no clever funny story about badassery then.

12:00 Nah its really not that harmful to choke someone out that is reasonably younger and fit (the type of person that gets into a fight to begin with). Knocking someone out is probably several orders of magnitude worse.

Great Story, great points imagine if there was 2 NFL players. People don't realize strength differences. I remember being a blue belt giving my friend a gi so we could train jiu jitsu. My friend formerly played rugby for Ireland (Prop) so there's a large weight and strength discrepancy.. If you ever seen in Rugby a ruck he did that and just mushed me into the ground and tapped me by purposely giving me cauliflower ear with his fist. Another great example is Derrick Lewis who just does a turkish get up with his opponents to his feet.

He *purposely* gave you cauliflower ear with his fist? Are you sure? If so, what an absolute douche. One thing that strikes me about BJJ is an element of gamesmanship. It's a question of (while training) how much of a dick do you want to be? There's definitely an element of being a dick in rugby culture and I wouldn't be surprised if it's the same in American Football too. By all accounts NFL players are ridiculously explosive while competitive Rugby players have that tenacious, grindy, cardio type strength that overpowers and wears you down over time.
