This is second day of my westward trip. Somewhere on Penn Hill, adjacent to Calne in Wiltshire is a lake, or pond, and I am trying to find it. I have been told there is a lovely nature reserve up there too. It is at the rear of the house I am staying in, but can I find the public footpath, let alone the lake!

I’m finding more and more footpaths, and bridlepaths, blocked, or marked as private. Alongside one path in Tottington the land owner has lined up 8 old Porto loos...I think he is expressing his opinion about the general public walking near his land! 🤭 Parish and County councils should take action to stop this anti-social behaviour 👍

The person that owns the land with the electric fence should be done for since he/she/they are breaking the law since it is a criminal offence to block or obstruct a public right of way.

Nice lake. I have a few ideas if you have time in your schedule/plans: Castle Combe village, and St Georges Church in Orcheston.

Looks like the "Private land signs" have been shot with an airgun! You know I mentioned how I've heard some folk pronounce "Cherhill" by using the name "Cheryl" well to give you an even more clearer understanding as to how I've heard some locals say it, it sounds like this "Chairyl" There, I hope that helps. Dialects can be funny.

Calne and the area around is full of my relatives. Try saying Goatacre as the locals do. Or come to that Calne!

Lovely walk there thankyou for the outing. It is off putting when people put up signs like that. It is private land of course in that it is privately owned but someone without much confidence might well just turn back although the public do in fact have a right of way. We lost an ancient right of way, which had been in use going back at least as far as medieval times, where I live, because the landowner kept blocking the path in various ways, & also took a few pot shots at people, & despite requests from the Ramblers Association etc, suceeded in blocking it progressively & letting it become overgrown till it eventually became utterly impassible. Then when the owner can claim the right of way has fallen out of use & has not really been used for the last twenty years it can be deemed no longer a right of way, sadly.

Lovely first walk. Whenever I go somewhere new I never really feel comfortable until I've worked out where I'm staying in relation to the surrounding country. By the end of the week you'll know it like the back of your hand! Beautiful skies . Looked like it could be a fishing lake?

I am dismayed about the fence blocking the way of the footpath and that would put off a lot of people. Lovely countryside though and there were some lovely skyscapes (if that is a word) in the background.

Report electric fence to council.

As a local, I can tell you that the electric fence is temporary and is only working when sheep are grazing in the field. The right of way cuts out a diagonal across the field, which saves about 3 mins walking when compared to the alternative of walking around the field perimeter on a track. It doesn't prevent use of the right of way, as you proved. The "Private Land" sign has nothing to do with the right of way and is located nowhere near it. The lake is a fishing lake (permits required) and is located on a former landfill site. I wouldn't recommend swimming in it!

I liked this video, a real adventure as you don't know the area which makes it more interesting because of not knowing what is around the next corner. The council need to be told about the electric fence as the land owner isn't allowed to put that there without there being a non electric attachment for you to get through. Very clear picture and loved the first track of music, what is it?

Different county, different countryside. I wonder if the lake is used for "wild swimming". It's very hidden. You are going to be lucky with the weather too this week. Lovely.

I had a great breakfast. Fresh eggs from my uncle's chickens. Bacon from a local farm. Real unpasteurized milk. Anything but whole milk will kill you. Great to see a lot of construction going up in England. Thomas Malthus (1766 -1834) concepts were traps. A little humor, but real. Eaglegards... P.S. Fishing?

I'm sure I read somewhere that in Scotland the public has the right of way everywhere. But we in England have the most restrictive right of way laws. Something has to be done about that. I'm looking forward to all your Wiltshire series.

A nice introduction to your Wiltshire explorations, some very dramatic cloudscapes!. I wonder how recently the electric fence was erected?. The current pandemic has probably been exploited by many unscrupulous landowners as fewer walkers take to the shires.
