Richard, just read this on X. “ A 96 year old lady causes death by dangerous driving and obviously shouldn’t have been driving. Now they’re calling for a blanket driving ban on anyone over 75. Bloody ridiculous. The number of healthy robust people this age and who are excellent drivers. What about boy racers?”. I tried to renew my car insurance earlier this year and the best I could find was £1200 a huge increase from previous years of around £300 fully comp. I have full NCB, no claims,, no parking nor speeding tickets, in fact a full, clean license. I have no health issues at 82. My car is very important to my life for family visits, ten miles away, and shopping which I do not wish to carry for a fair distance to my local, Tesco. It is age discrimination.

When I was nineteen, (in 1966) I realised that England would go to the dogs due to a number of factors, which I won't list here, so I migrated to another, better country. If you do the arithmetic, I am now 77. I drive a pluggable hybrid SUV (which I charge from solar PV ion my roof) and have no issue being insured to drive it. It seems that my approximately sixty years of driving experience stands me in good stead, because I have a top level driving rating. All I have to to do since I turned 75, is to have an annual eyesight test, and get my GP to complete a form confirming I am fit to drive. I have not had a driving accident since I was about twenty years old that was due to my fault. Nowadays I drive effortlessly in thick or thin traffic, in strange places or long distance. For instance, in a few months time I will take my caravan on a round trip of nearly 8,000 km. This is all very different from the apparently crazy situation in England. it seems in almost every way, England is going bonkers. Thank God I left there when I could. It was the best decision of my entire life. My impression is that England is rapidly becoming a failed state.

I'm not quite retired, but I'm disabled. Just over 2 years ago, a delivery van with big metal bumpers hit my car and pushed it backwards. I have video evidence showing I had nothing to do with the accident, my insurance told me to take my car to their garage. The garage then informed me that my car was unroadworthy and needed a lot of money spent on it before they could start the work on the body of the car. I asked them to return my car and I sent it for an MOT, which it passed. There was nothing wrong with the car, so I asked if I could send it to a Bodyshop of my choice, and they said yes. However, while trying to find a Bodyshop that would do insurance work, a taxi driver hit my neighbour's car, pushing it into the rear of my car and causing a lot of damage. Again, I had video evidence showing I had nothing to do with the accident. I informed the insurance about what happened, and they said to take my car to the Bodyshop I had chosen for both repairs. The Bodyshop sent in a quote, but then the insurance started to delay the process and wouldn't tell the Bodyshop to do the work. They also doubled my insurance, classing the accidents as my fault until the repairs were done (how can they charge extra when no one has been paid out). As the insurance had no intention of fixing my car, I sought advice from the ombudsman and citizens' advice. Despite the video evidence, they both told me I didn't have a case. What is the point of insurance? If the insurance companies refuse to pay out. The insurance still hasn't fixed my car to this date.

Richard. Thank you for your video, I am currently 69 years old and have been driving since the age of 17 but, I had driving lessons at 14 yrs on our school fields after school had finished from one of our dedicated teachers, I don't think they exist anymore, however, even at my age I still love driving which is a joy for me and always will be. There seems to be some bias towards the elderly which in some cases I agree with, but in the main most elderly are careful they don't drive without their seatbelts on they chat to their friends on their mobiles or race down the outside lane with road rage or with a larger in their hand or both!. In my opinion, the people in their so-called "White vans" early in the morning who seem to be always late for work! and love to tailgate drivers in front. UK GOV statistics between 2016-2021 show that drivers 70 and above contributed to 3% of accidents as opposed to 24.5% combined Male and female. I have had an accident-free driving life having driven vehicles in the army, and company cars with a driving certificate from ex-traffic police for excellent driving and observational care to other drivers. I drive a powerful BMW and drive a 9-seater disabled minibus verified with the DVLA at my place of work. My car insurance was £325.00 for fully comprehensive cover with a maximum no-claims bonus, so I searched around and found LV Insurance which was offering cheap cover for pensioners, they quoted 1,500.00! I am now with the RAC which doubled my cover with no other choice. I agree that there should be an alternative insurance setup strictly for pensioners subject to a medical and eye test with an observational drive out under all terrains at a fixed fee by a registered examiner to stop these rip-off insurance companies from penalizing the competent pensioners on the road today.

Change your insurance company, it costs more as you age, specifically after 80, but no issue if you’re prepared to pay inflated charges. Include a younger member of your family who has a clean licence as an additional member, it drives the cost down. Did this for my dad who is 91, I’m on his insurance being 66 with a clean licence. Price dropped £1000 per year, also worth limiting your mileage to say 3K ie 60 miles per week. It all helps.

My Father drove his car up to his early 80's but we were worr8ed for him as being a passenger we noticed he increasingly missed seeing things that were important and began misjudging space and speed. He actually recognised this himself and got rid of his car of his own choice. I do know friends who who have had to step in and protect their paren5s and other road users from harm. But I have also noted a lot of other younger people on the roads who's driving should be under scrutiny too. We all make mistakes whilst driving (my self included) and thankfully only a tiny percentage lead to crashes or harm, which is why we have traffic rules and insurance. My own insurance with a company I had been with for years suddenly shot up, I shopped around and ended up paying less than I had with a previous less powerful vehicle. I am driving 41 years and have never claimed on an insurance policy so imagine the profit insurance companies have made from me. They should be obliged to insure anyone of any age providing they are fit to be behind a wheel and do it at a fair price. My advice is shop around and don't be fobbed off with nonsense appeal to those who regulate the insurance companies if necessary!

My private car at the time was a Ford Focus ST225 which i had owned for 9 years and still had a clean licence. However, when i received my renewal notice my premium went up from about £500 to over £1200! When i queried this i was told that people my age should not be driving high powered cars. When i pointed out that i was employed as a professional driver, this did not count. When i shopped around i was given the same insult from other insurers so i had to sell my much cherished pride and joy. I am sure you will be getting similar stories from your subscribers. I have had to tell two ageing family members that they shouldn't drive anymore. Many people of 85 are fully competent drivers, and many are not. The solution in my view is that drivers who are 'old' should have to periodically take quick 15 minute test to determine whether they still have a grip on the situation around them when driving. Not a full driving test, just a 'have you still got it' test.

I too have just received a letter from my insurance broker saying they can nolonger offer "Standard personal lines of insurance" since many key insurance companies have withdrawn from operating via brokers! This is due in part to the very high level of claims and the nature of these claims where EV's are involved. Women are getting more like men and drive with anger and impatience. Women picking their children up from school are crazy if running late. "According to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, drivers between the ages of 16 and 17 are more likely to be involved in car accidents than drivers from any other age group. Additionally, teen drivers cause more injuries and deaths than other drivers, including injuries to themselves." I would rather be on roads if only 65 and over were allowed to drive!! It makes perfect sense for drivers over 70 to get a health clearance from their doctors. An over 70 who is healthy in mind and body is no danger. People driving drunk or on drugs, will always be with us.
