Hot Tent Camp Testing a new Woods Walker stove with OVEN, Honest opinion! How to roll a stove pipe

Woods Walker were kind enough to send me a stove to test, This was something completely new to me as it has a built in Oven!!
This was a first burn test and the stove ran great but the oven was a little compromised as the heat inside the oven was not even.
However I did manage to successfully bake some bread and roast some spuds.
The stove can also be used without the oven giving it quite a high heat output, too much in fact for the types of hot tents I use.
If you have a larger tent say 3 or 4 persons then it would be fine.
When configured as a stove/ oven, the firebox is smaller and does need quite a bit of frequent tending.

That's why it's a very good idea on the part of the manufacturer of the stoves, give people more than one option of a design and they can choose one that fits their preference and they will be happier. They both look like excellent stoves and either one of would likely fit the needs of most camping outdoorsmen. Thanks for showing them to us and giving your opinion Sandy. Pleased you were given the opportunity to review this stove, it was one I was considering and I did wonder about how well the oven section would work. I would really like to cook pizzas when camping but sadly I don’t think this is going to be the answer. The standard stove looks good and well made, went together very easily. Like the way the legs run full length rather than just on the two short sides.

I got a screaming deal on the oven stove on ebay so i had to order it. From your video it looks like the oven works just takes a bit of playing around which is expected. I understand you like the smaller more but having ability to bake and also have larger wood storage was important to me. One of the coolest designs ive seen for a stove especially at almost half the price of some other brands. My only concern would be more smoke getting out back door when whole box is in use but i guess we will see!

Hi Sandy. Looks to me like the oven needs raising up off the floor an inch, to allow for some heat to flow all around it. Probably a damper as well, to help direct the gases around. Back to the drawing board? Why not a box on top of the stove? Still, free toys are not to be sniffed at, and the company got some valid feedback. All the best.
@WiltshireMan
@WiltshireMan 2 жыл бұрын
I think they need to rethink the design a bit if they want to perfect it, but the oven did work, just needed a lot of fiddling and constant feeding the fire and turning the food in the oven

Didn’t see this til today. Great overall test and feedback- had my doubts on this one. You can get a separate oven that sets on top of any hot tent stove, which seems to be the best option I think. I really liked the looks and performance of the Russian Bear stoves, but after talking with the company they don’t do titanium. People - including myself are trying to move away from Chinese product, but tell me who is making all the Ti outdoor kit? China. ATB 😎

Great video, excellent explanation on both stoves. Cheers for your review, it's shaped my opinion on the smaller of the two as a choice. With the door design, could I possibly ask if there's much leakage from any smoke? I can see the door doesn't have any sort of seal, same for where the chimney attaches to the stove. Cheers
@WiltshireMan
@WiltshireMan Жыл бұрын
Don't get any smoke leakage at all until you close the flu damper fully, then it does smoke a bit, I can close the damper down by 2/3 and its fine but any less and it will leak smoke. I think the later stoves also have a better flu connection

Got the smaller one.personaly always burn it at home first because of making a better and quicker roll of the chimney I used a 6ft tube same diameter and rolled it in that with all the rings on. Havnt seen anyone roll it up and re roll out after the burn.but it is quite easy to keep shape after initial burn.the small wood basket that comes with it is a wast of time.and the wire shelf I may keep but it's a bit gimmicky.alsaid it's a damn good stove.

I have the woodswalker as well. I do prefer the "normal" size stove though by the looks it`s too big to carry around other than for car camping. What car camping is concerned, my first choice would be my Orland stove from Danmark. For those there are also an oven available which you can buy seperately but I`ve never really felt the need to use an oven in the field other than a dutch oven. Nice review though :-)

@lprpallet

@@WiltshireMan I`ve used it once just for the burn in. But I also have a Winnerwell titanium stove which was an older model and a bit (from my opinion) more flimsy. I saw the woodswalker on Amazon and for the price I thought why not so I decided to buy it and hence the quality isn`t any different from the far more expensive Winnerwell.

Just a thought, but while there's a pan of water on top, the oven temperature may struggle go above boiling point. I notice that when the temperature read 160 degrees, there was no pan of water on top. Thanks for the video.

interesting stove, i've seen / used a few stove ovens and they all have their quirks, chimney ones get too hot, sit on top ones too cool, internal ones uneven.. its just getting used to their attributes really.. the roast dinner looked delicious though :)

Roast dinner was good Andy, you'll have to come over to Wiltshire for a camp but you'll have to bring a Pomoly with you, not many flat rocks here to cook your dinner on:) The oven on this stove worked but it took a lot of tending, I prefer the smaller stove of the two

Lovely Jubbly. Could you be so kind as to tell me what make of camp bed you used and is it comfortable? Thank you. It would be good to know where the smoke goes in relation to that Oven, over, under and whether or not there is a baffle plate in the top of the stove or not, I guess not due to weight. I think you need good seasoned hardwood and you need the damper in as much as possible without smoking yourself out. I think that with a little bit of fiddling, some aluminium foil etc, you'd get yourself a decent Pie or two out of that stove.
@WiltshireMan
@WiltshireMan 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Robert, the heat goes up over the top of the oven then up the pipe and yes a bit of damper keeps the heat in, as for the camp cot, it was just a real cheap thing, perhaps the cheapest one you could find, don't know the make though

Hi Sandy, I would tend to agree with those who preferred the smaller, simpler stove. Do you think that the chimney would compromise the tent when it rains? Thanks for sharing. I really enjoyed the calls of the owls. Regards from S Africa Clive

Hi Clive, I've camped in heavy rain now and can report there is some rain ingress but as soon as it hits the pipe or runs down it just evaporates and inside remains dry, even with the stove cold not a lot of moisture gets in

I say ya buy one ya get one free ( ADVERT ) sandy ,, not your intended intention but hey ho 2 for the price of one 👌 like you say sandy I'd opt for the smaller one as it seems more practical in the long run 👍 A good camp with very nice food 😋👌maybe better if the oven had a slider vent lower down nearest the actual fire , so you'd get more heat and possibly no smokiness 🤔👌

Hi good video one question what's your opinion on using the inner with the stove in use with the one tigris tent , live" long and prosper" mate
@WiltshireMan
@WiltshireMan 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Marc I have no issues or concerns using the inner with the stove but one thing I do which I may not have pointed out clearly, I only retire to the comfort of the sleeping bag once the stove has died down and the chimney is cooling down cos one thing you don't want is to be zipped up and unable to escape quickly should a fire break out.
