Easy Autumn Wild Camp, Trangia Storm Cooker 27, Bike packing, New kit test.Wiltshire Man

Now we've had some rain to dampen things down a bit, I head out to my permission woodland for a relaxing Wild camp as we head into the first few days of Autumn.
I cook my meal using a Trangia 27 Storm cooker and light my cam with a Feurhand Storm lantern.
I was keen to try out a new sleeping bag I recently purchased from Go Outdoors, it's the OEX Fathom EV300 which is a 3 season sleeping bag.
I'm glad to say it was just the job and will do well for the coming adventures I have planned over the next few weeks.

Forget all those super-duper lightweight titanium burners or fast boil gas stoves, you really cannot beat an ordinary Trangia for reliability and contentment.

too right buddy! my fancy stove failed in the middle of a scottish wild camping trip and no supper or coffee was possible. had to cut the hike short ;(

@@wandering_not_lost fancee feast stove and simple windscreen saved my early spring hike. At 6000ft my isobutane stove wouldn’t light so a simpler alcohol stove saved the day. Trangia is good for actual cooking. I used my caldera cone like stove to make breakfast and coffee when the iso wouldn’t light even though I kept the canister in my sleeping bag at freezing temperatures.

Magic cam, works a charm. I had the tripod setup before I went to sleep just had to turn the camera on when I first woke up, so it almost captured the scene perfectly

Hi Sandy, another awesome video in such a lovely location. Can't beat the glow from a kerosene lamp. Used one on a trip about 2 months back, although a cheapo knockoff copy. So atmospheric so I had to get a real one when I got back and, like you, I got the same green Feuerhand one - also from the Bushcraft Store in Enfield - minus the tax and only a week to reach me out here in Malaysia ! I got a Trangia mini ,I once seen a good copy of the larger set in Aldi for about 15 quid . Handy for a brew up in lay-bys when out & about on the motorcycles . You can also knock up a spirit stove from an old coke can using a Swiss Army knife or similar . Used to love cycling as well as my motorcycles ,but now my lungs are knackered with emphysema. ( COPD ) . Too many cigarettes & working in dusty conditions on building sites took its toll . Now limited to riding bikes with engines only . Always find your videos entertaining 👍

Hi Sandy. Thanks for taking us along on the early Autumn camp. - Relaxing just watching you! Good little tip there for getting the trangia stove to bloom more quickly. Can see how it would be a big help in the cold. I have the cheaper alcohol stove set, the esbit, in which I use methyrlated spirits. I know you're a confirmed stoveaholic, so was wondering if you, or any of your viewers, have heard of adding a little water to the meths? Apparently, it's supposed to help with not sooting up the pots so much. You got me curious about this new bike??????

Hi David, I have heard about adding water to the meths, it's been around for many years that trick. I have tried it but not sure just how effective it is. Probably makes the soot easier to clean off the pots as there is more moisture and condensate on the bottom of the pans, but I feel it also lowers the flames temperature. Not so good for Winter either when every bit of heat counts

Of all my stoves I think the Trangia is perhaps the best allrounder, though for strickly woodland/bushcraft camping maybe the Folding firebox is better as it's fuel is plentiful and free:)

Hi Dan, The OEX bag is great but be careful of the lantern, they may look the same but there are some cheap Chinese knockoffs which aren't very good. The best ones are the German made Feuerhand lamps

Hi Sandy I thought a "Gravel bike" a road bike that takes fat tyres but thta's too obvious. I'm going to put my money on a folding bike like a Brompton or Dahon. Easy to travel on train or bus with. Ahhaa...Well as for the Trangia burner I store it seperately these days as I once has a minor spillage/ leak and didn't notice it until I went to eat my rehydrated meal. The meths had tainted the water and the food tasted foul, I had to throw it away and I was starving hungry too... So now I store the burner seperate and it leaves a small space within the kettle for a small brew kit etc

@@WiltshireMan I did that on mine simple job, fitted a 16 tooth sprocket and a 112 link 525 chain increased mpg my 7%. Just a thought 😀

Bacon and steaks ruined vegatarian dishes for me too Bry:) According to the weatherv man from the Met office he said we have moved into the first week of Meteriological Autumn. Maybe that comes a bit earlier than proper Autumn:)?

@@WiltshireMan Yes. Met offices around the World designate the official start of Autumn as Sep 1st. Same with the 1st of Dec, March & June are the 'official' starts of Winter, Spring & Summer. Its not astrologically correct, but just makes things simpler down on Earth :)

Hi Barry, As the dry weather continued the parch marks actually became fainter as the greener foliage also became parched.. As for a cover for the bike I have decided not to bother with one, it saves weight and the bike will get wet wether I'm riding it or not if it rains. It will get a good clean up when I get back home as indeed will I :)

Sandy, a golden rule of camping is (or was) don’t camp under trees. Can you give us any tips on how you choose a relatively safe location to pitch your tent, to avoid shedding branches? Thanks.

Hi Mr G. Well I would say the Golden rule is not to camp under dangerous tree's or what we call "Widow makers". Woodland camping can be quite safe.I usually only camp close to smaller tree's or sapplings and those that have good solid roots and always look up for potential hazards like dead or hung up branches which could come crashing down on you. Woodland camping is not wisthout some risk though and I would avoid the woods altogether during a storm

Hi Mick, the Backwoods bungalow and Iron wall tents are both quite cheap but they are very different tents. I would only use this tent in Spring, Summer and Autumn. The Ironwall is better for Winter especially when using it with a stove
