Wily has an amazing swing! He has a baseball academy in Tampa and my son played for him for a few years. At 39 he was still crushing balls. It was fun to watch. On a personal level, Wily is an all around great guy. He loves to teach and always gives time for kids and fans that come by just to say hi.

In 2001, when the Yankees traded Peña to Cincinnati he played for the low A Dayton Dragons in their inaugural season. They produced posters of that inaugural outfield line up. Single A Dayton outfield consisted of Wily Mo Peña, Adam Dunn, and Austin Kearns

Wily Mo played for my hometown's team, Águilas Cibaeña in Santiago, Dominican Republic. He has a colossal batting power but he received a lot of strike out. He's a friendly guy and a good person with the fans.

I remember Wily Mo Pena from playing MLB 06 or 07 the show, I’d usually pick the Red Sox to play as David Ortiz, but Wily Mo Pena stood out because for the first or second grader in me, it was a fun name to say, and I hit many dingers with Pena in that game

I saw him hit a grandslam here in Cincinnati at GABP. The ball seemingly disappeared into the Kentucky night. Also, I think it was his first year in Boston, he hit a ball at least 110mph towards the Monster and almost decapitated a few fans.

Red Sox traded Bronson Arroyo for this guy. One of the most underrated bad trades they've made. Arroyo would go on to have a solid career and even made it into a HOF ballot. That said, at the time, I was excited, because of the power potential. Turned out to be mostly just potential though. I do agree if he was healthy and was playing every day, he could've done well, and certainly would've fit into today's game more.
@christopherb.84652 жыл бұрын
Wily Mo wasn't quite as one dimensional as people think or what you're making him out to be. His career BA of .250 is consistent with league average, he hit.301 his first year in Boston, and ran well enough to have a 26 steal season in the minors.
@josephstockman34252 жыл бұрын
He had a lot of physical tools, especially before he was 300 lbs. He could run very well early in his career. He had a strong arm in the outfield. He was a very good athlete. He had a lot of bat speed and power. Injuries, getting heavier and his inability to identify pitches are what kept him from being an all star in the big leagues. He is still a success story, he played professional baseball for a long time. He made a few all star games in Japan and made a lot of money. Some guys can have all the skills, but if you cannot identify pitchers you are going to struggle. There is a player named Jose Siri that is an amazingly elite talent but he cannot identify pitches to save his life.
