This is so obviously useful, why hasn't anyone thought of it before. You can literally have players who are designated subs, make them have specific training sessions throughout the season geared towards playing 30 mins instead of 90. Imagine the way you can grab control of a game by subbing on three players who get a flying start and know exactly how to take advantage of their time, instead of just putting on a striker and hoping for the best

It’s been common place in rugby (and other attritional sports) for years. Especially in high impact positions like Prop and Flanker. I think through the years there have been a few players like ole at Man U and Batman at Chelsea. I believe due to the lack of physicality in football the benefits haven’t been as obvious as in a contact heavy sport like rugby. More and more football is taking on influences from other sports in the management side as the margins get smaller between success and failure and the incremental benefit of general “coaching” slows… which is why you are an increasingly seeing “smaller” clubs and managers draw from other sports and other industries. Long story short… “needs musts” probably.

He didn't really, he nicked it from rugby, this has been a thing in rugby for a few years. The South Africa coach (Rassie Erasmus) famously used the 'bomb squad' in the World cup final; the bomb squad consists of doing all your subs in one location (attack) in one go, all of whom intentionally train together so can attack in reheresed patterns. I know he's taken it from Rugby because these types of subs are called 'finishers' in rugby talk so seem likely he's adapted that idea. Credit to him for taking the idea, adapting it a getting a job out of it though.

Tuvey's analytics and second opinions compliment Robbo well. Sammy Lander has been a great addition and revolutionized the way we treat our subs - because of him, our subs have become our most impactful players and have caused most of our goals this season to come in the closing stages of the game. We are still a very small club with a miniscule budget - we will be for the foreseeable future - but we are squeezing the absolute most out of every pound and that brings me immense joy as a Wimbledon fan.

It makes sense. Subs barely play 45+ minutes per game. So having them spend 20+ minute training intensively so when they come off the bench and play at 70th minute, they can impact the game in 20 minutes. Very smart. So imagine you have 11 backup players, your “B team”, and put them on an intense training drills for 20+ minute.
@jackRB543 жыл бұрын
Very interesting concept, and if the data shows that's its working, which it seems so, it definitely begs the question of "how has no-one thought of this before?". There have definitely been players in the past who have excelled as "super-subs", so perhaps no-one's thought of it at a squad level rather than just specific players? Good on Sammy for being a potential trailblazer, and good on AFC Wimbledon on giving this guy a chance.

The innovation is really interesting and impressive (though I imagine some clubs are already doing some of these things and would lump them in with sports psychology), perhaps even moreso that it's come out of a lower league, but it kinda worries me that the more of these marginal gains which come at costs (say £20,000 a year) which are relativly high for a non-league or even league 1 or 2 club but are trivial for a PL or Championship outfit. If eveyone who can afford to starts hiring a subs coach it'll only make the gulf between the top level and lower leagues bigger.
