Oh dear. When I turned 50, I was spinning in circles working as a cafeteria lady and after some thought, decided to give myself the gift of backpacking, something I had done in my teens and really loved. So, I spent the next couple of years learning outdoor skills and tramping the Ozarks whenever I could get a couple days off. The first night I was out in the woods, just me and my dog, I was so terrified I prayed for the first time since I was probably 15. I talked to God a lot when I was out tramping though it would be a couple years and a major life crisis before I would think seriously about going to Church. I gave up backpacking when I started RCIA mostly because Church took up my Sundays. It was a sacrifice but worth it. But, yes, go out into the wilderness with nothing but your wits, your dog and whatever you can carry and the prayers will come 🙂

We are weak and foolish Christians when we don't stand against our society's culture that goes against Christianity. When I haven't watched TV for a while, then start again I have to face the sinfulness, not just major things but everyday things, the degrading others, put downs, lack of respect & dignity given to others, making fun of others. Also breaking of first 2 Commandments. God alone, no other gods. No occult, tarot cards, yoga, seances, etc. No participation in other religions, pagan, Islam, Buddhist, etc including no idols from pagan or other gods. To follow God's laws and Gospel values, is to be wise and spiritual strong. We need closeness to God in prayer daily to be able to do so.

But the most important reason is then I cannot attend daily Mass or receive the Most Holy Eucharist and the Weekly Sacrament of Penance to keep strong in my Holy Catholic Faith. I am fighting daily, the paganism of the world , the flesh that is weak because of the weakness of the Original Sin I inherited from our first parents and the Most Wicked Devil who I fight constantly. I know I’m no wimp with the Help of God’s Grace and Our Blessed Mother always there to protect and help me . I don’t need the wilderness to test how much I Love God and my Holy Catholic Faith .

Fr. Mark im at a point that i think our experiences and hardships dont even mean anything anymore. Its simply not up to us. I think its a calling to surrender to God. His judgement is His alone, not mine and no matter what I do Jesus Christ already did it all on the cross... there is nothing I can do but trust in His word. Feels kinda helpless, but maybe it just is what it is. Im beginning to think that the wimpy ones are those fighting tooth and nail to pave their own path through the dogma of it all. Not being wimpy is more about being in the world and having the courage to witness the good news of the kingdom of God, even at the risk of being mocked and rejected ! Isn't that what Jesus and His disciples did ? Jesus never taught to spend one's life in seclusion. (Luke 10:3) Go your ways: behold, I send you forth as lambs among wolves...(Luke 11:33) No man, when he hath lighted a candle, putteth it in a secret place, neither under a bushel, but on a candlestick, that they which come in may see the light. Living in the Wilderness takes a lot of preparation. Could you remind your young followers that they need the 10 essentials and to have a contact number? Just to remind your viewers of this, things can happen in the wilderness that are not foreseen. Dear Father Happy and blessed New Year to you, to your loved ones and your parishioners and viewers of your inspiring videos. However, I wonder why the desert fathers would be so high on your list; it seems that fashion came from Henry Nouwen and Thomas Merton, which perhaps without their express intention somehow circumvented the real, so to speak, certified-canonized saints. I know you shared your thoughts and understanding of St. John of the Cross. He was well versed with Str. Thomas Aquinas and St. Theresa of Avila which makes them of prime interest to all of us when it comes to psychology of the religion, and that is one true and only Holy Catholic religion. That means they had to deal with the attacks of the devil and many temptations. Same with St. Faustina Kowalska and Padre Pio. Thus they offer the answers to many questions. The young people in our Church are in need of that to navigate through the perilous times today. If you feel that is in accordance with the God's Will, maybe you can produca some videos about these things. And also, where in Universe can a guy on the Social assistance which is me find a cabin, or to have a nice sabbatical in a wilderness.?!! It takes the dough, as yo' who often use San Fernando valley slang can understand, capisce? :) God bless you Father and thank you for your ministry to God and to us.

Thank you dear father. Getting away in solitude is very crucial. We can get to know the Lord. He can talk to us if we listen. In anything we’re doing what you said does apply. We can always do something more intensely in imaginatively and creatively. Yes, wimps we all are. We’re so distracted that we really don’t focus much on things because there’s too many of them. That is why being alone with the Lord essential. I missed you these last three days. I wondered where you were. I was hoping you were not sick. God bless you and Viva, Cristo, Rey!
